AFS Intercultural Programs: High School Abroad in Belgium
by: AFS-USA
As one of the multicultural microcosms in the heart of Europe, mixing contemporary society with a rich history, Belgium provides an enjoyable and exciting study abroad experience. You'll walk through medieval town squares and streets in the midst of a thoroughly modern country with influences in its culture from the French, Dutch, Austrians, and Spanish. Belgium's cuisine reflects its varied people and history, boasting one of the best experiences for your palate imaginable. And, of course, there's chocolate! Belgium consists of three regions: Flanders in the north where most of the people speak Dutch; Wallonia in the south, where the majority is French-speaking; and Brussels, the bilingual capital in the center of the country. Both the AFS Flanders and Wallonia programs host students in Brussels and their own areas. In the north, Dutch-speaking Flemings live in a flatland crisscrossed by canals. Being hosted in the French-speaking Community of Belgium, you'll get to know the Walloons who live among the rolling hills of the Ardennes sprinkled with castles and the capital city of Brussels—home to both the European Union and NATO.

Program Highlights
Study in one of the food hubs of the world—Belgium, known for their street vendors as well as their delectable chocolate!
Immerse yourself in the French or Flemish language and join a community of multilingual people; you'll likely encounter those speaking German or Dutch as well.
Live with a host family to deepen your immersion and connection to Belgian culture.
Experience the cultural melting pot of Belgium, where its rich history has influences from many cultures across Europe.
Explore many European regions; due to Belgium's small size, you’ll be just a train ride away from Brussels, the coast, or neighboring countries (France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg).

I learned patience and gratitude
November 08, 2018by: Mattisen W.It chose AFS because it was the most used organization in my area so I only really knew about that one. But I learned once I was there that it was one of the better options anyway compared to other organizations. During my experience I gained friends from every corner of the world, I learned patience and gratitude for what I have, and I learned how to travel.
