Teaching and social life in zanzibar
September 30, 2024by: Asia Convertinothe teaching program is a 10/10 program, you get to fully know the place you stay in by doing lots of activities and getting to know the people all around the zone. Staff tries their best in making your stay as comfortable as possible and everyone is so friendly. There are a lot of chances to make friends and get to know the people you work with and the local teachers are really friendly. Also zanzibar is one of the best places i’ve ever seen, with lots of activities to do.
A great experience
September 24, 2024by: Hana MasferrerStaying in Zanzibar doing this volunteering was a dream come true, since I had always wanted to try working with children. It’s a great experience for all ages and types of persons. I have met amazing people from all over the world and I am really greatful to have been able to do this with african impact.
My time in Zanzibar
September 24, 2024by: Jahnu HuebnerOverall my time in Zanzibar has been absolutely incredible, the experiences I have had the opportunity to enjoy has really been a blessing and I’m so thankful for all the people involved. I have learnt so much about the island and about myself and how I carry myself from day to day. I will value my time here so much and take back all my amazing lessons which will help me to appreciate everything we have at home. Overall this time has been amazing the location was incredible, the support from the staff was amazing and the hospitality was unbeatable
my experience
September 23, 2024by: Annamaria Roccatagliatathe experience was beautiful but the cost was too high compared to the lifestyle. Many times they didn't know what to do and I worked in jobs that were far from my chosen program. Much information was missing before departure. Food is scarce and limited. Experience to have but totally changing mode
My experience
September 20, 2024by: Florence HemberMy overall experience was amazing at African Impact, it was my first solo travel and I was so nervous, since the moment I came I was welcomed instantly and very quickly became comfortable and got along with all the staff and volunteers. Life changing experience, so happy I chose African impact and would recommend it anyone. A massive thank you for the best experience, I will miss this place very much and will be returning in the future.
My experience in Zanzibar
September 19, 2024by: Federica ConvertinoVolunteering in Zanzibar as an English teacher was an incredible experience. I found students who were motivated and eager to learn, and the welcome from the community was extraordinary. African Impact has done an excellent job providing support and resources to make our contribution meaningful. An experience that I recommend to anyone who wants to make a difference and discover a new culture!
South Devon college Zanzibar trip 2024
September 12, 2024by: Oscar O’SullivanI am speechless, this trip has been a once in a life time experience and opportunity, the people I have met and the things I have learnt will stay with me forever and I am extremely grateful to African impact and all the people of Zanzibar for such amazing trip!
A truly incredible experience
September 12, 2024by: Monique GreenWow not sure where to start! As an apprehensive middle aged volunteer attending with my daughter I cannot thank African Impact enough for the experience of community teaching - beautiful island setting with incredible staff at base camp who made us feel so supported and welcomed - always available to help with wonderful smiles. Fellow volunteers made the experience so fun. Students were amazing - two weeks is not enough! Would 100% recommend.
South Devon college adventure sports, Zanzibar trip
September 09, 2024by: Lleyton ForbesA experience I wouldn’t miss for the world, living in a new culture and new environment with the support from Suzie and others as well as our teachers efforts and planning we couldn’t of had a better time. We have all learned an incredible amount not even about life in Africa but about ourselves.
An unforgettable opportunity
September 09, 2024by: Christopher RudelIf you can deal with hot weather and insects, you may come out of this program a changed person, as I have. The dynamic between the diverse volunteers, the staff, and the locals (both adults and children) never gets old. There is a sense of community present in Zanzibar that you simply cannot find in western countries. There is no shortage of things to do and tours to take in your free time that will consistently leave you breathless. I cannot recommend the teaching program enough. If I could give advice, I would recommend staying at least 4 weeks. Anything less may not be worth it. I was there for 5 weeks and could have stayed another week or two!
My time in Zanzibar
September 08, 2024by: Myles MartinI really enjoyed this Turing project as I learnt lots of new things for example the history of the island and the coral reefs. My favourite part was definitely snorkelling over the reef at pungume island as I’m very interested in marine life.
My Experience
September 07, 2024by: Rebecca BallaròAlberto and Annie were very good at organizing, as well as being nice people. It was a wonderful experience, but I think the cost of the experience was too high compared to what was provided to us. Many things were not specified, the meals were supposed to be all included, but instead they told us that every Wednesday if we didn't go to the local dinner we would have to dine elsewhere at our expense. The teaching and childcare program was very interesting even though there were too many volunteers in the same class and there was no work to do.
Volunteering
September 07, 2024by: Giulia GallinaIt was a unique and beautiful experience. Unfortunately, however, I encountered several problems that had not been mentioned before, for example having to dress all the time. Furthermore, the pace was too tight and the group activities were not very engaging. Finally, as Italians we experienced an unpleasant situation and we felt constantly criticized despite making the maximum effort to complete the activities, while other people behaved very badly and avoided completing the tasks. Overall, I had a good time also thanks to the group of Italian friends that was created and also with the person in charge of the volunteers.
Amazing experience
September 04, 2024by: Tina BleaseWe have travelled with students to engage in a volunteering programme teaching in Zanzibar. The information shared prior to the trip was outstanding with Kya the base manager joining a virtual meeting before to answer any questions. The team were there as planned to welcome us and we had contact details throughout for any support at all. The students were fully immersed in the local culture and the students awareness of other cultures has exceeded all expectations during our time here. They have grown so much as individuals too. The confidence it takes to teach a class English or hygiene skills with a language barrier demonstrates their growth. They have had a life changing experience with many students now wanting to volunteer abroad again, one even wants to live abroad and work as a teacher. They have learnt so many other skills such as travelling, dealing with customs, ensuring they have the correct documentation, meeting new people, and collaboration. I hope to organise this again in the future.
Can't wait to return
September 02, 2024by: Ann-Katrin OhlerthI had such a good time and felt so useful and fulfilled that I first prolonged from 5 to then 10 weeks, and now I'm already looking into how to return soon to Jambiani. From day one, I could tell that the project is run with a lot of love and roots in the community. The staff helped us volunteers ease into it a lot and were super kind and helpful to plan everything around work and free time. I hope to be back as soon as possible.
An experience I think about years later
December 24, 2023by: Adela Strnadova - Czech RepublicI've participated in the volunteering program in summer 2016 and fast forward to 2023, I'm still thinking about this experience with a smile on my face. In fact, the teaching experience inspired me to get TEFL certification. I highly recommend African Impact to everyone who has an adventurous nature and longs for travels where they will immerse in the local culture.
The best decision I ever made
December 22, 2023by: Nikki Maclaren - New ZealandMy volunteer trip to Zanzibar was my first time leaving my little country of New Zealand and it was best experience of my life! It was hard at times being so far away from home but the community and support from the team was worth it. I often reflect on the memories I made and the people I met and wish I could go back! I had every opportunity to experience everything I could in Zanzibar and would highly recommend this adventure to anyone who can do it. Not only does giving back feel good in general but giving back to a community that welcomes you with open arms and accepts you like one of their own is an entirely different feeling. This experience has certainly benefited my life! Thank you, African Impact!
Teaching and community project
January 22, 2023by: Michaela O’DonovanMy experience was amazing! The staff were extremely welcoming and friendly. We were immersed into the community and culture in many different aspects which I really enjoyed and appreciated. Despite never having taught before I felt comfortable in the classroom due to the prep from the team as well as having them to help me at all times. All together was an incredible experience
The best thing I have ever done
November 15, 2022by: BriThe staff are wonderful and provide volunteers with safety and security. The materials available are never ending and the freedom to be creative with lessons is encouraging. The meals are nutritious and wholesome. The activities are a great addition to the bonding experience and give volunteers something new to look forward to each week. Everyone should volunteer here and meet the wonderful people of Zanzibar.
Karibu! Welcome home!
November 06, 2022by: Melissa MFrom the moment I reached Zanzibar, I felt welcomed. The community and the African Impact team make you feel right at home. The volunteer experience was GREAT! The strong dedication and commitment to partner with the community is very evident. When I've volunteered in the past it has mostly been with youth so to teach English to adults who were choosing daily to elevate themselves was an incredible experience to be a part of. I hope to return to Zanzibar very soon.....and bring some friends!
My time in Zanzibar!!
November 03, 2022by: Bryanna BensonI can’t say enough amazing things about this program and the people involved that make it so great day in and day out. You’ll feel at home within your first couple hours AND you’ll fit in perfectly because EVERYONE brings something special and unique to this experience.
Unforgettable experience!
November 02, 2022by: Elise JonesSuch an amazing opportunity and experience. Super organisation, and really fulfilling work. So much support offered from the coordinators on the ground, including help with organising weekend excursions and help orientating and planning lessons. Felt instantly at home and treated like one of the family. Will definitely be going back !
My unique journey
July 22, 2022by: Maëlle BukietI loved this adventure ! I wish to everyone to once in their life time to experience this inspiring journey ! I came to Zanzibar hoping to teach English to the community and I came back home with my new self ! I was indeed the one who learnt from the community and other volunteers!
Wow! What an experience on a island paradise!
July 22, 2022by: Lars KuehniI cannot really put into words what I have experienced here! 10/10! The island is a rare paradise on earth and the Teaching Project is an experience so different it will change your point of view on various things you thought of it as worldwide standards! I will be more thankful for everything when I return back home!
African Impact Zanzibar experience
June 24, 2022by: BigpapaHad a great time. The cost was way over priced because I booked through a third party. African Impact needs to remove all third party sellers to improve the experience. The expectation I had when initially looking for something to do in Africa were met. But, the information given on the African impact website and third party websites were very out of date. This led me to disliking the living conditions because I felt deceived on what to expect.
Excellent experience
June 23, 2022by: Emily ManderThis was a fantastic experience that I would thoroughly recommend to others. It’s a great opportunity to meet new people and do some really worthwhile and fun work in an exciting country. The staff were all very friendly but the staff member that stood out by a mile was Kya. She was incredibly engaging and friendly and I always felt very supported by her and thoroughly enjoyed my time working with her.
Volunteer
March 06, 2020by: Erin - CanadaThis is my first volunteer experience abroad and I can say for certain that it was the best experience of my life. The project, the people, the students, the community, my expectations are blown away.
Community teaching project
February 28, 2020by: Tine - New Zealandwhen i first arrived in Zanzibar i was so nervous about the next 4 weeks of my life, but i was instantly put at ease by the warm welcoming nature of all the staff and other vols. i was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food, facilities and overall project.
2 months in paradise
February 28, 2020by: Oli - FranceI leave France with the idea that I wanted to be alone and I finally leave Jambiani with a family from another country. I wish to everyone to live the same experience as me. The place, the students, everything will stay in my memory. I'm so glad and thankful. No words can describes how incredible was this trip.
Teaching and community project
February 21, 2020by: lenaadlw - GermanyIt was my first time in African Impact and I enjoyed it very much. All of them are so friendly and lovely. I felt very well and would always do it again! Thank you very much for my time here, it was amazing.
Zanzibar teaching
February 07, 2020by: Georgia - AustraliaI volunteered in Zanzibar with African Impact for 1 month and it was genuinely the most rewarding and life changing month of my life. From being able to teach english to both children and adults, to seeing a completely different side to the community and the people that live here. I am so grateful I had the opportunity to come to Zanzibar and will be going back to Australia much more open minded. I would definitely love to have another volunteering experience through African Impact.
Teaching and community project
February 07, 2020by: Jahari - AustraliaThe white sandy beaches, warm weather, welcoming community, and fun weekend activities made my time in Zanzibar an experience like no other. I feel so grateful to have had the opportunity to teach some of the children and adults of this beautiful community. This trip has not only given me a new perspective but has also given me life long friends. I am so glad I came on this adventure with African Impact.
Amazing and rewarding
January 31, 2020by: Joseph Peter Roberts - United KingdomThis has been one of the most amazing and rewarding experiences of my life. From day one all the coordinators have been welcoming, kind, helpful and awesome which made me instantly at home at the volunteer house. Which for me is a big thing when staying in one place for a long time. The volunteer house is in a great location in my opinion being so close to the beach, loads of lovely restaurants and the schools. The food was an initially shock for me as there is not always meat on the menu, which is very unusual in my diet, but I have been turned to that veggie diet and I loved all the food served especially the veggie burgers. The teaching has been the obvious highlight. Both nursery schools are such a joy to teach but my personal favourite was the adult school in the afternoon because you can really see the change you are making in the community with many of them getting jobs with the English you are teaching them. which is so great to see. My only regret is not booking to stay longer.
Fergus's review
January 31, 2020by: Fergus - Irelandoverall a terrific experience, the enthusiasm of students is a sight not to be missed, this enthusiasm is evident in both junior and senior students. The camaraderie amongst the volunteers is incredible, with all pulling together when needed, this was also evident in leisure activities, where we all immersed ourselves in
Zanzibar teaching
December 13, 2019by: Sakara Patterson - AustraliaVolunteering in Zanzibar through the teaching project was extremely life-changing. You are immersed in the community, being highly respected by everyone. You also learn the language, and form many relationships.
Zanzibar teaching
December 02, 2019by: AdrienneB - United StatesThe program has been amazing and the days are packed with exciting and interesting activities. Local teachers are welcoming and supportive, and students are friendly and always excited to learn. Jambiani is such an beautiful place with incredible people!
Zanzibar teaching
November 29, 2019by: Lieke Baltussen - NetherlandsI just loved this project. First of all, I really liked teaching the little kids. It was a challenge some days to get them to listen to you and get them involved in the lesson, but after a little while you will get to know little tricks and of course the kids themselves, which is absolutely lovely. When they get something right and look really proud or when they really like a song and sing along like their life's depend on it, it is just worth the effort. The teachers were lovely as well. They really welcomed us to their school and helped out a lot. Then adult class. Adult class is just amazing. The students are lovely, funny and really eager to learn. It was a real pleasure teaching them everyday and it taught me so much. The students each have their own opinion and view on life, which makes it really interesting to talk to them and learn more about their life and way of thinking. I taught my class together with one of the local assistant coordinators, who was really helpful and made it a lot of fun. The other activities that come with the project were really amazing and helped a lot in getting to know the culture, village and people in Jambiani. Local meal once a week was definitely one of the highlights and sewing together with the Kanga ladies was a nice way to just sit, relax and chat with them and each other. Jambiani is a really cute village filled the best. The view, beach and ocean are breathtaking. Last but definitely not least the staff, local and international, on the project were so nice, welcoming and really helpful. Thank you all for the amazing time. Nitarudi.
Teaching project Zanzibar
November 22, 2019by: Larissa Gut - SwitzerlandIt was the best thing I ever made. It was an amazing experience to be so close to the community of Jambiani, being a teacher and just learn so many things about the life here in Jambiani. The weekdays are much stronger than I thought they would be, but after the first week you get used to it. For me, three weeks was too short. If I am doing it again I would stay at least four weeks, because it takes you a week until you get into it, find your role in the volunteer house and how the life works here. After that it is just amazing, I will never forget it. The weekends are like holidays, it is very good organised, I liked that we just had to tell what we would like to do and our bookers, booked everything and help us. So it was very uncomplicated to do something at the weekend and we had the chance to get some unforgettable memories. Asante sana
3 weeks teaching in Jambiani
November 22, 2019by: Alessandra Aries - ItalyI have almost finished my time here in Jambiani and I couldn't be happier. Here I had the possibility to live a unique experience. I knew a lot of people from different countries, I lived with them everyday, 24 hours a day, and everyone will be forever in my heart. We had the opportunity to live with the people of Jambiani, cook with them, sew with them, and just being part of their life. Teaching here has been amazing in both nursery and adult classes. I will never forget the smiles of the children and the desire to learn of the adults. I hope to have let something positive here in Jambiani, and I am sure that come back to Italy I will be a new and better person. Thank you African Impact.
2 weeks, not nearly enough time here!
November 15, 2019by: EmmaMBartlett - United StatesI spent two weeks here in Jambiani on the teaching and community project which flew by in the blink of an eye. I would highly recommend staying for longer. The daily routine was sustainable and the two weeks I spent were also filled with fun excursions and volunteer activities. I think some of my highlights included learning to make Chapatti with the Kanga ladies and watching the moonrise with the other volunteers. The adult class was also a highlight of mine. The volunteer house is right on the beach which provided for a beautiful backyard. The locals are friendly and welcoming!
Asante sana Zanzibar
November 15, 2019by: Natalia Lage - BrazilAsante Sana in Swahili means Thank you very much... At the end of my journey I only want to thank everyone that was involved in the most amazing time I had in my life. I am so grateful for everything I've been through here. I came with the idea of giving a little bit of what I have to helping other people, but at the end I could realise that I also gained so much with this experience. I did 6 weeks of the Teaching Program and I would totally recommend it, my advise is: don't stay only for two weeks because you don't get to have enough time for everything there is to do here. Come with an open mind, heart and be happy!!!
A valuable experience
November 01, 2019by: mamma Disa - IcelandHi my name is Sigdis (Disa) and I come from Iceland. Im a 44 year old teacher and I have been working with children for more than twenty years. I decided to let my dream come true and do a volunteer job in Africa. I chose to come to Jambiani because I found the place really beautiful. I decided to come here without any worries and expectations. my mind was an open book. Everyone at the volunteer house were so nice and friendly, and willing to help in any way. So that was a good start. when I started to go to nursery I was really shocked by the condition they have, but still I was openminded. That is just the way they do things here. What troubled me the most in nursery was the lack of positive dissaplin from the local teachers. I saw some things that shocked me. But then I thought, what can they do when they have a whole school full of children and maybe just one teacher is coming to work? I still struggled with my feelings about this whole thing but I was also determined to keep an open mind. In adult class I really enjoyed myself. I overwhelmed how the students were interested in learning and being so happy and positive. I really loved being there to make some kind of an impact. The Kanga ladies.....omg....that was probably the best time of the week. I loved being there with them, teaching them how to crochet and getting to know them. It was obvious that they caught my heart from the beginning, with their unity, laughter and determination to make their lives better. The live at the volunteer house was really good, all though the heat in my room was not that good :) The staff was wonderful and really did everything they could to help in any way. I made a good connection with the other volunteers as well, though I sometimes just wanted to have a little privacy. I am the oldest volunteer in the house but they never made me feel any different, we are all equal here :) I will certainly miss Jambiani and I hope I will come back someday.
Review_Nadine
October 30, 2019by: N_170 - GermanyFor me, African Impact is a very good organization for volunteers who want to help and who enjoy teaching local people and being actively involved in community projects. I do not want to miss the experience that you take with me in the time and can only recommend it to help people!
Teaching and community support
October 25, 2019by: Anne - SwitzerlandIt was a very interesting experience here in Jambiani. You live directly in the village and is also from the first day part of it. The cultural exchange is especially big during the adult class, in the conversations, discussions and debates. Many students come to the adult class and take part in the lessons with a lot of motivation. It is nice to see that some students have already found a job due to their acquired knowledge of English. In contrast, the lessons in the nursery schools were always a bit wild. Without the local teachers in the classrooms, it was often difficult to tame the children and keep their attention. All in all, these were intensive and eventful weeks that I would not want to miss.
Best experience of my life!
October 07, 2019by: Alice - BelgiumI had an amazing stay in Zanzibar. - The teaching project I was on was incredible. Teaching 5-year-old kids was really fun, and teaching the adults was very interesting (you can learn a lot about the students culture, their life and their way of thinking - which is impossible with the children). This experience changes your way of thinking and your way of living. You come back grown up and more mature! - The volunteer house is really comfortable, the rooms are cleaned every day and the food is very good. - There is a lot to do in Zanzibar, and activities are really easy to plan thanks to the staff.
Best trip!
October 04, 2019by: mwillsher - AustraliaI have absolutely loved my trip here! It was such a great experience to be able to immerse myself in a community that is completely different to one that I am use to. Being able to interact and teach children and adult was something that I won't ever forget. It was amazing to be able to see the improvements they made just over the four weeks I was here. I would 100% want to come back here again.
African Impact experience
October 04, 2019by: Evie Marker - AustraliaMy experience with African impact has been one which I won't forget. The people, the place is so beautiful and the work is so rewarding. the environment in which we are volunteering is welcoming, fun and a space where we can both enjoy Zanzibar as well as as have the positive impact on the community we came here to achieve. meeting and getting to know the students has been so incredible and their determination and dedication to learning is inspiring. I feel as though I've learnt so much over my time here, from teaching a language to just taking life as it comes, anything can be resolved with love and kindness. Kuwa Na Furaha. walking through the village and hearing "teacher, teacher" from everywhere just shows the direct impact we are having on the community and that feeling in itself is so special. African impact really is having a positive impact on the people of Zanzibar and I'm so happy I was apart of it. Hakuna Matata really is life Moto
My wonderful Zanzibar adventure
October 04, 2019by: dewarmj - AustraliaI have spent the last 6 weeks in absolute paradise in Zanzibar. The teaching and community support project has been incredible and a true eye-opening experience. The staff here are so friendly and supportive, they don't feel like staff and more like family! No matter where you come from all of the volunteers get along with each other and we really do become one great big family, my experience definitely wouldn't have been the same without them. Teaching in nursery and adult class is hard work but so rewarding, seeing the progress of my students over the course of my time here was amazing. It's a long day of volunteering but you finish the day with a juice on the beach feeling fulfilled and like you have actually helped to make an impact on someone. The weekend activities are so well organised, it is so easy to do absolutely anything you want to, all organised by the awesome staff. The accommodation and food is a lot better than I expected, sometimes the electricity or water would cut out which could make it hot, but it is Africa after all! Overall it has been the most rewarding experience and I wouldn't change a thing about my time here, completely loved it!
Zanzibar teaching
September 17, 2019by: Lea - SwitzerlandI really enjoyed my time with African Impact in Zanzibar. It was an unforgettable experience for me and I would definitely do it again. I have learnt so many new things about the people here but also about myself which will always be helpful in my future.
Home away from home
September 17, 2019by: Liebo - BelgiumI had the best time here. Staying in one place for a longer period and engage in the local life really enriched me. Although I stayed for a rather short period, I felt at home (away from home). The teaching was amazing; it was so nice to work with the kids & to feel the gratitude of the adult students. They made us feel welcome right away. Just like the staff, there were amazing. Kya and Mira are always willing to help you out with your questions. I also really liked working with Badru and Dede. They make it a lot easier to work with the children and form a bridge between the local teachers and us, volunteers. Next to the project, this place is just paradise. The scenery is so beautiful. There are also a lot of things to do because of the tourism here (sometimes this felt a bit double, but the combination is really nice).
Zanzibar teaching
September 17, 2019by: Kitee Surfer - United KingdomI knew that it would be hard to leave this project, but I didn't realise it would be this hard to leave. This experience has taught me so much, and I have met the most amazing people here. All the students, nursery and adult, are beautifully pure, and I will never forget any of them. I have made best friends for life, and had the taste of living in paradise. I can't thank everyone enough for my time here. This definitely won't be my only trip to Zanzibar.

September 13, 2019by: Simon - New Zealandi enjoyed my entire time thoroughly. All the different activities we get to do day in and day out really surprised me. We were always busy and never felt bored or not interested. Zanzibar is a really beautiful island.
My review
September 13, 2019by: John - AustraliaMy overall experience was very good and i enjoyed myself. At times i was in my uncomfortable zone mainly because of my age and also because i felt incompetent as a teacher, but everybody was very accepting of me and as time went by i grew in confidence. The students were lovely and eager to learn especially the older ones. The locals were very friendly and seemed genuinely pleased that we were there. I never felt any animosity towards me or anyone else. The volunteers were amazing and i enjoyed their company enormously.the staff and organisation were very good and overall the whole experience was very rewarding and worth while
Maria Consuelo's review
September 13, 2019by: Maria Consuelo - ItalyI'm so glad I had the opportunity to be part of this project. This has been, surely, one of the best experiences in my life. I feel changed in a good way: the project has taught me a lot. I've realised that giving and helping others can become a real aim in life. I wish I've stayed longer: two weeks are not enough.
Teaching Zanzibar
August 30, 2019by: Charlotta - AustriaI really enjoyed my overall stay here in Zanzibar. You literally wake up to paradise every morning and the sunrise here is the most beautiful I have ever seen. It was amazing to experience Zanzibar not as a tourist but as a part of the community here.
Zanzibar teaching
August 23, 2019by: Jeremy Anderson - United KingdomThe Zanzibar teaching experience was better than I ever could have expected! There is such a great relationship between volunteers and students at both nursery and adult school that shows how much they appreciate what we do - you really feel like you are part of the community here and you become real friends with many of the students. The work always feels impactful and you can see the difference and improvement it causes, even in just a few weeks. When not on project there is so much to see and do in the local area and a huge variety of different weekend options available. There is always a fantastic atmosphere in the house - everyone is very relaxed and happy, and you become settled in so quickly when you arrive. The only downside is that you have to leave!
Zanzibar teaching
August 23, 2019by: Kirstin - GermanyIt was nice to get some insight in local life i.e. school etc., get in touch with local inhabitants and . try do make a little difference with our volunteer service. Every day was a different day which was amazing.

August 23, 2019by: Scarlett - United KingdomI have loved every minute of this experience. I not only made friends for life but it has made me consider a different career path in the future. I loved teaching so much more than I thought I would, and have loved getting to know my class. I will really miss my students, the other volunteers and all the staff from African Impact.

August 16, 2019by: Vittoria Militello - ItalyThis experience has been one of the best in my entire life. I'll definitely come back as a volunteer and this place will be in my heart forever, I wish I could stay here more ;( 3 weeks was the best anyway
Zanzibar English teaching
August 16, 2019by: Catty - ItalyIt was an amazing experience. Teaching kids in nursery and adults was so enriching and it made me understand better the important things in life. Everyday life here is so interesting and I wish i could be here longer.
What an experience!!
August 16, 2019by: Candice Alexandre - BelgiumI really like my experience at African Impact. It was so enriching to live in the heart of the community. We learn an other culture, and a place where the people are so kind, and so friendly with the foreigners. It is so great to see that they really want to learn more and more every day! It is also an occasion to meet another volunteers from everywhere. It is the perfect place to become another person, just ready to help and to meet each other... Thanks for this amazing experience, it was so goood !!!
Teaching & community support Zanzibar
August 12, 2019by: Alex - SwitzerlandI spent 3 weeks with the teaching and community support project in Zanibar and thoroughly enjoyed my time here. Together with a great group of volunteers I felt I could make an impact in the local community by teaching nursery and adult classes. The local community made all of us feel welcome in Jambiani and contributed greatly to my positive experience. Lastly, activities and trips on the weekends gave me the opportunity to see more of Zanzibar appreciate this place even more. Thank you for the great time to everyone involved!
Zee - Zanzibar 2019
August 09, 2019by: Justzaina - United KingdomBeing part of the African Impact project has been an honour. Before I arrived in Zanzibar I had just finished school in England and I was trying to decide between a holiday to Ibiza or Malaga, then whilst looking at holiday packages I saw an advert for volunteering and my mind was set on it instantly. I have enjoyed every second of this experience, seeing the smile on the kids face when they get a sticker, seeing the eyes of adult students light up when they get full marks on a test. Being a part of the culture has also been amazing and I never felt like a tourist with African Impact. Thank you so much for this experience, I will never forget it and this is the beginning of my adventures.
Teaching and community project in Zanzibar
August 09, 2019by: Danya - Saudi ArabiaTo begin with, I signed up for 2 weeks and to be honest once I went inside the house it felt as home the workers in the house were so kind and the managers as well. Another thing that I really admired about African Impact is that how they really focused about safety and security. As for the project, the first week was more for orientation to get to know the village, the classes, the students and how everything goes. the second week we got more involved, so it was more enjoyable. Therefore, I really recommend 3 weeks better than 2.
Volunteering time
August 09, 2019by: ilabuona - ItalyThis has been my first experience volunteering but i felt since the first moment fitted in all the activities. The volunteering was the best way to understand the culture of Zanzibar and the best way to have impact in the world.
Zanzibar teaching
August 09, 2019by: Edo papi - ItalyI really enjoyed my experience in Zanzibar. I was involved in the teaching project for adults and children. In Jambiani village I had a great experience working in the nursery and teaching English to adults in the afternoon.
African Impact: amazing experience
August 09, 2019by: Sun - IraqAt first I was a little nervous coming on this trip because I wasn't sure what to expect, but it truly was amazing. I met such amazing people, and got to experience the culture in a way you wouldn't be able to on holiday. The project is very well organised so that you're able to experience a little bit of everything like working with the adults as well as the children. The team at African Impact is so helpful because they make sure to ease you into the whole experience especially if its your first time, they make sure to clarify any doubts you may have. They're also really helpful when it comes to planning weekend activities, and are always available to assist if you have any questions or help with the general planning process. Living at the volunteer house made the whole experience so much more impactful because you get the chance to really get to know the people you'll be working alongside- it takes a bit of adjusting but it's so worth it. You'll also find that the work is rewarding, in that, you can see your students progress and improve. Seeing that, and having that hands on approach is really amazing.
Teaching in Zanzibar
August 02, 2019by: Alina - SwitzerlandThis was my first time volunteering and I loved it. Now my five weeks are over and I'm pretty sad. We were supposed to teach the students but I think I learnt way more from them!:-) I met some amazing people here and we had a great time together. The atmosphere in the house was always great and I always felt loved and safe. Teaching the kids and be able to play with them was amazing and I loved it. Teaching the adults was a whole new experience for me. I definitely had to step out of my Comfort zone while teaching them. First I was a bit scared cause I wasn't sure if I can teach the medium class with the level of english that I've had. But then it turned out amazing and I had some amazing conversations with the students and I had n problems teaching them. I'm really sad to leave them! The weekends here were amazing. The staff in the house were amazing and I'm so sad to leave them all.
Teaching in Zanzibar
August 02, 2019by: EvaH - FranceThis was my second time volunteering, and it was really different but the I feel the same at the end : I don't want to leave !! I met amazing people here, the place is amazing too. Teaching kids was really fun, and being able to teach adults was an unique experience that I loved.
Teaching Zanzibar
August 02, 2019by: Letizia - ItalyMy volunteering in Zanzibar has been an amazing experience. I had the opportunity to do a full immersion in a new culture, live close to the locals and really get to know them. As a volunteer, I could really feel how helpful it is the project of African Impact for the locals. Both the kids and the adults feel grateful for receiving an education and understand deeply its value and its importance for their lives.
Teaching Zanzibar
July 26, 2019by: Alex - ItalyThis experience was very great. I loved teaching adults and children. The place is very beautiful in particular the beach and the sea. People are very friendly and very funny. I want to say thank you to Mira and Kya for this incredible adventure.
Do it!
July 26, 2019by: EmilieP - SwitzerlandI had such a great time! The nursery school is hard work but it's worth it because the children are the cutest of the cutest! It filled my heart with love every time they came running and screamed "teacher teacher". But also in the adult class it was never boring, we always had something to laugh about. Great students! Karibu!
Zanzibar teaching and community project
July 26, 2019by: Auriane17 - FranceI have loved this experience : adults and children were so grateful and enthusiastic about learning English. It has also taught me how to manage a group and teach them well, while some of them do not speak English for now. I would not hesitate to do it another time!
Zanzibar teaching
July 26, 2019by: Kate - AustraliaMy time spent teaching in Zanzibar has been an overall positive experience. I was able to fully immerse myself into my position as a teacher in both nursery school and adult class, and as a result was able to obtain a wholesome experience with various age groups in the Jambiani community. Although at times the schedule can be quite challenging, the volunteer coordinators Mira and Kya maintain a positive and enthusiastic attitude inspiring others to do the same.
Zanzibar community and teaching support
July 26, 2019by: Anmol Malik - United KingdomThis project was an amazing experience in every aspect. The location of the project is beautiful, right next to a stunning beach. The community is filled with warm welcoming, fun people who show you lots of love making you feel totally safe and at home. We volunteer in nursery's and in an adult class where everyone is so enthusiastic to learn. I totally recommend staying for at least 3 weeks as 2 weeks is just no where near enough as it takes the first week to get into the flow of the class!
Zanzibar teaching
July 26, 2019by: Fabio - ItalyI had a wonderful time in Jambiani, people were so kind with me and locals were absolutely outgoing and funny. I found an incredible joy teaching kids and adults, because i felt their happiness came from learning and interacting with different people and cultures. Life in this country is so different from life in mine, and i'm not talking about the difference in the amount of money, but i feel as here people are more happy to live and to share their potential with each other. I also had a wonderful time with other volunteers, and i am sure of the idea that i will come back here next year.
Teaching experience in Zanzibar
July 26, 2019by: Vittoria - ItalyI loved this experience so much! I really enjoyed to stay in Jambiani, to teach children and adults and discover their culture, which is completely different from mine. During this time I learned from my students and from the locals as much as they learned from me. Moreover Jambiani is a beautiful village and all the locals are so nice and friendly to tourists.
Teaching Zanzibar
July 26, 2019by: fra - ItalyI love this experience, i have met fantastic people and i fell in love with this place. I love African populations in particular this. Jambiani is wonderful place and it is very cozy. i maybe the next year i will come back here
Zanzibar teaching and community support
July 26, 2019by: Emilie Dub - FranceI enjoyed every minute of this project. I loved teaching in nursery, the children were so joyful and energetic, they brought me so much joy. I will miss them. But what I enjoyed the most was teaching to the most eager to learn adults, I could really see how grateful they were and how much progress they accomplished during my time here. The days were exhausting but so full of laughters and happiness that you completely forgot it. Would definitely recommend this project. Asante Sana.
Teaching at Zanzibar schools
July 26, 2019by: Fra - ItalyMy time here at African Impact has been one of the best of my life. I never felt alone because the members of the staff were always there to help and the other volunteers were just amazing. My favourite part about the project was teaching to the kids: they were all so cute and full of energies, even the last days when I was a little tired i couldn't help but feeling happy just seeing them. Adult classes were also a lot of fun, I was very surprised about their determination. I am very sad to leave such a beautiful place and such beautiful people, I'll miss so much this place especially the kids smile.
Review of African Impact
July 26, 2019by: Millie - AustraliaI throughly enjoyed my experience as an African Impact Volunteer in Zanzibar. All the other volunteers were very friendly, Kya was really helpful and I learnt a lot from her guidance. I really enjoyed the day to day life, getting to know the students, both adults and the children and all the locals were respectful and super nice and friendly.
Teaching and community project in Jambiani, Zanzibar
July 22, 2019by: Fleur - NetherlandsHad a wonderful time here in Jambiani! Kya, Mira and Dulla make sure you feel at ease and are very organised. The teaching itself was a new experience for me, nevertheless, I would do it again. Also, the trips we made in the weekends were fantastic. Concluded I can describe my time here as an unique experience in and with the most friendly community in Zanzibar!
Zanzibar education
July 19, 2019by: Shauna Cranny - IrelandI currently work as a teacher and thought spending my summer holidays in a beautiful country helping people in an area I feel quite strongly about would be a good start to my summer. African Impact has far exceeded my expectations. Arriving into the community you can see the impact this organisation has on the locals. A small fishing village has an incredibly high percentage of the population with English language abilities. Throughout my time here, the locals have expressed immense gratitude for everything African Impact has helped them with. Whether that is improving their English speaking, writing and reading ability which in turn increases their employment opportunities or the community support offered on Fridays which ensures Jambiani remains a beautiful place to live or visit. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed my time here, and I am leaving feeling like I genuinely made a difference.
My trip
July 19, 2019by: Eugenia - SpainAfter three weeks in Zanzibar with African Impact, I can say I achieved my goals, with high success. I have learned a lot of the local people by teaching them and go a lot of love from the little kids. I admire them all and all the people that volunteer to help them. I can honestly say it is really worth it.
Teaching and community support project
July 19, 2019by: HildurI was here in Jambiani for 5 weeks and really enjoyed my time here. I loved teaching the children in the morning all though it took a lot of energy from you. I also enjoyed teaching adult class because they were so willing to learn. Zanzibar is so beautiful and I would really like to come back here!
My trip
July 19, 2019by: Alicia - SpainThis trip went far beyond my expectations. I had the most amazing three weeks ever and I am certain I will never forget this wonderful experience. Everything was amazing, from the teaching, to the African Impact community, all the other volunteers, of course the location, the staff and of course the whole Jambiani community who made me feel at home from the first minute. Beyond grateful.
Zanzibar community and support
July 15, 2019by: Jennifer Norris - IrelandI had a fantastic time in Jambiani on the community and support project. It was such a rewarding thing for me to do. Teaching the nursery students was always exciting and a fun experience. While teaching the adult English classes was an enriching experience, being able to see the progress being made by the students was fantastic. The connections we made with the community was something I had never experienced before; this was all experienced in just 2 weeks!
Zanzibar community support
July 15, 2019by: Avril Dunne - IrelandExcellent programme run very professionally. Ability to interact with locals and make an impact while also having time to do excursions and trips around Zanzibar. Staff were so helpful at all times. Had the chance to immerse into a new culture because of the relationship African impact have already built.
Zanzibar teaching and community program
July 12, 2019by: gioforquet - ItalyI have been to Zanzibar for just two weeks and I regret my decision of just two weeks.I enjoyed my experience here and I will hold it forever as a great memory.Teaching to children with a smile always on their face filled my heart of joy. Teaching adults was very interesting and challenging but I am sure that they learnt something from my lessons, to be honest I have also learnt a lot from them and this will make me grateful for life. The people in the volunteer house have been welcoming since day one and you can breathe a good atmosphere every day.I will absolutely repeat this experience! Asante sana African Impact! Faida na kukuona hivi karibuni Jambiani!
ZanzIbar teacher
July 12, 2019by: Gmingot - SpainMy experience as a volunteer in Zanzibar has been great, I have really enjoyed teaching and being part of the community in such a special way. The way everything is set and managed has made my experience as good as possible and I am already looking forward to come back.
Teaching & community support Zanzibar
July 12, 2019by: Flamy - ItalyI have loved my experience here in Zanzibar as a teacher. Unfortunately I only came here for 2 weeks, and I wish I stayed more. The place is amazing, people are lovely and overall an incredible experience. I am very pleased and I hope to come back in the future. I loved teaching children, they were always very enthusiastic, but I also very enjoyed teaching adults as I believe it was the most rewarding part because you could actually see their improvement every day. I loved Jambiani as the place is absolutely fabulous, so there is always something to do and lots of places to visit in he weekends.
Community teaching project
July 03, 2019by: Giulia DN - ItalyI have been in Jambiani for four weeks. I taught English to the nursery kids and to adults and I also taught Italian. It has been a very enriching experience. It was interesting to work in an international context and to know the local culture. I found a good organisation and a very helpful staff.
Best experience of my life
June 28, 2019by: kendal - United StatesI was so nervous to travel to Africa for six weeks on my own, especially with what everyone was saying before I left (be careful, wow you really don't know ANYONE?, etc.). The program made me feel so safe and so supported as soon as my flight landed in Zanzibar. I am so glad I decided to stay for six weeks and not less, because I really got to connect and become close with not just the volunteers, but the staff as well and see the impact I was making on the community. It was honestly the best experience of my life and I accomplished my goal by coming here: to solidify my future career plans. It's truly a once-in-a-lifetime kind of experience and I'm so grateful to have been able to come.
Zanzibar experience
June 28, 2019by: Kia Kesser - United StatesI really enjoyed my trip to Zanzibar to teach. The children and adult students were always enthusiastic to learn and the staff members were always very helpful with anything we needed. I loved the community engagement and how kind everyone is here. The only negative thing I would have to say is there are a lot of rules for the volunteers to follow and random added expenses. Although those two things were a surprise I had an incredible time and will definitely be back.
Good
June 21, 2019by: colinjo914 - United StatesMy experience in Zanzibar with African Impact was great. I loved teaching the nursery children and adults, but also exploring, partying, and doing excursions. Definitely a great experience! I need more characters so i'll add this last sentence.
African Impact teaching
June 21, 2019by: Max - United StatesTeaching with African Impact was a good experience. There are many opportunities to learn Swahili or improve it. I appreciate that African Impact allowed for us to try local cuisine. I'm grateful to African Impact.
Teaching project
June 21, 2019by: Germangirl - GermanyI definitely would recommend the teaching project. Everyone should see Africa and see how they live here. I am so happy that I went to Zanizibar. And one thing is clear: I will come back. I love it here.
Zanzibar teaching and community project
June 21, 2019by: rmelton3 - United StatesThis was such a remarkable experience for me. This is my second time volunteering with African Impact, but the first time at this location, and it exceeded all of my expectations. From the house, the volunteers, the staff, the locals, the schools, to the excursions, I really couldn't have asked for a better three weeks.
Everything was great
June 21, 2019by: AmberKilmer - United StatesEverything was great. The living situation was great. Before coming here, I did not think that I would make an impact. Now that I see what impact I made on the peoples' lives, I do not want to leave.
Amazing in Zanzibar with African Impact
June 14, 2019by: MV - BelgiumThe four weeks I spent in Zanzibar volunteering for African Impact were just amazing. Everything from the daily routine, the weather, the food, the people (other volunteers, coordinators, staff members, the help, the students and the locals), the food, the culture, the week end's activities and the project was so great and way beyond my expectations! It's with a heavy heart but full of wonderful memories that I'm leaving this place which will have forever a special place in my heart.
Teaching and community project
June 13, 2019by: George - United KingdomI really enjoyed my time in Zanzibar. The locals were really friendly and wanted to talk to you. They saw you as a 'teacher' not a tourist which was really nice. I had a great time teaching and getting to know my students. I also loved relaxing on the beach and exploring the beautiful island.
Teaching project
June 07, 2019by: Steffi - AustriaI really enjoyed my time here in Zanzibar. I had a lot of fun teaching the adults. They are great, self motivated and very funny too. Also I really enjoyed to spend my time with the other volunteers. On the weekends and after teaching classes we went swimming, did great trips, went snorkeling or just had fun with playing cards. All of the staff members are very friendly and helpful. You can ask them every question and the always try to help you. We had lots of opportunities to meet the locals and get more knowledge about the culture here, which was really interesting. The food at the house is delicious, I was very happy about that.
My time with African Impact
May 31, 2019by: Aurelie - BelgiumI was here for 2 months. It had some ups and downs for me. In the beginning i didn't want to stay for so long i didn't knew any body, settling in for me was difficult. But how longer I was staying how more i got attached to people and now it is going to be very hard to leave everybody behind. Living i a different culture than your own is a very good learning school. You learn so many different views on the world from a lot of people, I think everybody should do something out of there comfort zone, it is the best thing i ever did!
Teaching
April 29, 2019by: Marie - BelgiumReally nice program. The kids are soooo cute and really grateful. I will miss them a lot. It's a really interactive and funny way to teach (songs, games, flashcards,...). Sometimes a bit hard to see the teachers hitting the kids.
Great
April 19, 2019by: Jonathon - United KingdomHaving previously undertaken this project on 3 occasions, i knew what i was signing up for. The location is second to none, the community in Jambiani are the most welcoming, friendly people i have had the fortune to work with.
Teaching and community project
April 19, 2019by: Michelle - United KingdomI have really enjoyed this experience and it has made me appreciate what we have back in England. I work in a school and it has made me think differently about how my pupils see education. The community here are very respectful and really appreciate what we do. I would definitely come again and would encourage others to come.
2 week volunteering
April 05, 2019by: the_leif_guy - United StatesFor the 2 weeks I was teaching in Zanzibar, I felt the staff explained the rules of the local village (e.g. don't walk to the beach shirtless, don't go to that one bar that the community is trying to close down) very well. And because African Impact seems to have a recoginized name, I felt I was a part of the community instead of just a tourist. Regarding the actual teaching experience, the local staff at African Impact has very standardized lesson plans and a good training structure such that volunteers can observe for the first few days and teach within a short span of time. Each day was very well structured. There are a few minor things that can be improved on. The laundry situation is difficult, so you may want to bring a lot of clothes. Wi-fi is available but can be improved on. But overall, this was a very good experience
Experience dolphins in the wild and support their welfare and conservation
March 25, 2019by: JanL - United StatesI love dolphins. The Marine Conservation Project is an excellent program to support the welfare and conservation of dolphins in the wild in Zanzibar where there is a flourishing “swim with wild dolphin” tourism industry and no government regulations. It was wonderful to be out on the water almost every day to monitor the dolphins, tourists and boat drivers. Boat drivers are being trained in alternative ways to both encourage tourism and protect the dolphins. I particularly enjoyed strategizing to educate a bigger audience of tourists, hotels, travel agencies, big tour companies and guide books and the college of tourism.
An opportunity to really help a community
March 22, 2019by: Hannah Lenz - AustriaIt was definitely one of the best experiences of my life. You were so close to the community and helped in schools, adult class (where you learn so much about your students and the life in Zanzibar und Tanzania and could impact the environment in the village and the life of the society of Jambiani by joining the community project.
Local impact
March 15, 2019by: Felix - GermanyI came here because I wanted to get in touch with locals and I wanted to leave an impact. And it makes me really happy that I was not only able to teach them but also get to know their culture and talk about their dreams and believes.
Real Zanzibar: A chance to work with the communities on one of the world's most beautiful islands
March 08, 2019by: FMRB2 - United KingdomMy experience in Zanzibar was my 4th time volunteering with African Impact. This latest trip confirmed to me why AI are the best volunteer organisation I have worked with. They provide sustainable and rewarding projects that impact both the community and volunteers, by having a strong staff base so that volunteers are supported and classes can always run regardless of volunteer numbers. For me, there is no better way to get to know a country than to gain perspective from the community there and with AI you are able to achieve this in a respectful and rewarding manner.
A lovely project
March 08, 2019by: Sus - SwedenI had a wonderful time here at the teaching project in Jambiani! Love the nursery school, adult class and the Kanga ladies! I loved the culture here at Zanzibar, and it was so nice to meet all these people here that are living here! So nice to listen to the people in the schools what their dreams look like. I have really got an other perspective of things being here.
Zanzibar community project
February 26, 2019by: Teresa - GermanyI had such a good time here in Jambiani! Being part of the community was amazing, if I would have been a tourist, I wouldn’t had the same experience. Teaching kids in the morning was sometimes exhausted, cause I am not use to teach 40 kids, but I really enjoyed, seeing them getting better each day makes me proud, and feeling good in what I am doing. Adult-Class in the afternoon was also really good, every week we got a new Theme so it never gets boring. Community-Project on Fridays was also one of my favourite things, cleaning the beach, or going on Dullas farm to pick vegetables for buying water for the Community a great experience.
Stay longer than a couple of weeks!
February 22, 2019by: Linda - United StatesBefore and during our stay the support staff was outstanding. Accommodations and food were very good. The highlight for me was the adult classes at the community center where i found most students to be eager and engaging. Good lesson plans maintain continuity from volunteer to volunteer. I volunteered for two weeks, and would recommend that volunteers stay for at least three.
A terrific program!
February 22, 2019by: martink - United StatesA terrific program! The experience with the nursery children went about as expected, a bit chaotic and confusing a first. But the experience with the adult English program was more rewarding than I expected. They were eager, welcoming and engaging!
Amazing!
February 08, 2019by: Sara - AustraliaHad such an amazing experience travelling across the world with African Impact, given the opportunity to teach English while making life long friends and being immersed in Zanzibar's beautiful culture.
Excellency in Jambiani
February 04, 2019by: Skye Baker - AustraliaI give excellent ratings for all components of my experience in Jambiani as it is difficult to fault anything during my time spent with African Impact. The project itself, despite involving a teaching role that doesn't relate to my career or study at all, was interesting, rewarding and impressive in many aspects. The trip was explained very well and the coordination of my arrivals, departures etc ran smoothly without any misunderstandings or issues. The environment we lived in and the food we were fed exceeded my expectations and I thoroughly enjoyed staying with African Impact, especially since it felt like home even in the first few days of being here. Our community engagement was something else to commend, as we got to know a variety of locals who taught us new things about Zanzibar, and helped us learn everything we needed to know while making jokes and making us feel welcome. I felt very safe in Zanzibar, and even though I was lucky enough not to get sick at any stage during my trip, I believe if I did then it would have been able to be resolved or dealt with very well. Finally, the day to day life in Zanzibar was well coordinated, and the breaks always seemed to be exactly when you needed them, which ensured when we got into the teaching and community work we were reenergised.
African Impact
February 01, 2019by: Amie-Lee - AustraliaSuch a great experience. I loved every minute of it and would definitely do it again in a heartbeat. You make such a positive impact to the community and individuals Volunteering is definitely something that I will be doing many more times.
Teaching & community project - January 2019
January 25, 2019by: sophiekasm - United KingdomI have really enjoyed my time on this project. It exceeded my expectations in many respects, and I felt that the project was well organised. I think it would be beneficial if in future volunteers are informed in advance of what an average day might look like, and how time would be spent on the project. I found the co-ordinators to be very helpful and extremely friendly, which was great. I also found there to be a great mix of other volunteers and much more of a social element than I thought there would be, which has made the project more enjoyable. I was also really impressed by the extent of impact the project has on the local community, and for this reason I would not hesitate to recommend African Impact to friends and family.

January 24, 2019by: jillmattox - United StatesEverything was wonderful in Zanzibar. Beautiful place to spend a few weeks making a difference in the lives of the locals as well as a meaningful impact in my own life. This experience has changed me, I will never be the same.
Zanzibar community project
January 19, 2019by: sartje - AustraliaGreat experience! The project really does make a difference. Teaching the children and adults is setting them up for further education and work placements. African impact is a real positive influence on the community. Being a volunteer has been fun and has helped me learn and grow.
7 weeks in Zanzibar
December 10, 2018by: beatricevdg - BelgiumZanzibar is a beautiful island with an impressing community. The volunteer work is amazing and I really noticed that I change something in the community. The house is nice but the rooms are not really clean and we had a room with not much storage space. The interaction with locals is all up to you. If you want a lot of interaction and you are an open person you get a lot of interaction.
A lifetime experience
October 19, 2018by: Jenn - SwitzerlandI volunteered on the Teaching and Community project in Zanzibar for 4 weeks. Jambiani is absolutely beautiful and everyone is so friendly. I really loved to teach all these cute kids and to see how they improved their English. A experience I definitely won't forget.
Mon experience a Jambiani

October 05, 2018by: ANNABELLEinZANZIBAR - AustraliaThis whole experience is one like no other. I couldn't have asked for a more like-minded group of people to be working with. It is a life changing experience that you have to do at least once throughout your lifetime.
Zanzibar volunteering
September 24, 2018by: lucyczanzibar - United KingdomThe booking process was very easy, and I was put in contact with people that could answer any questions that I had. The orientation process once I arrived made me feel very confident and comfortable. Teaching the adults and children in the project was challenging and tiring but so amazing. Definitely a trip that I won't forget!
An incredible experience
September 07, 2018by: Redhead - SwitzerlandI have always wanted to do something meaningful. This year the time has come and I took the gap between internship and master studies to do a volunteering stay. In fact it was an incredible experience. To see the happy people, especially your nursery students smiling at you is just fascinating. And when they are always crying teacher, teacher! Just amazing!
Teaching program
September 07, 2018by: wasmiya - KuwaitThe program is a life changing experience & it affected me greatly. Teaching the kids was amazing including the excitement, energy, & how eager they are to learn. The adults class was also very fun to teach because they all wanted to learn.

August 24, 2018by: Giac - ItalyI've been living in the community project house of African Impact for 2 months which is, for some people, an unthinkable amount of time but not enough for others...each to their own. I personally have had one of the best experiences of my life and I will remember the time I have spent here for the rest of my life. I am definitely looking forward to coming back to this amazing island where I first understood the life of local people, although the presence of luxurious Resorts and Hotels, is not as easy and predictable as we might believe. With that being said, I don't really have anything to add but I have had so much fun and I will see you guys (volunteers and staff) again, sooner or later.
A new perspective
August 24, 2018by: Lara - ItalyThis experience has helped me in opening my heart towars people who really need it and i have learned to look at everyday life with different eyes. I felt important to the adults i theached to and lucky to help them
Amazing adventure
August 23, 2018by: Camipas - ItalyMy experience in Zanzibar was the most amazing I could ever ask for. I felt part of something really big, I felt helpful for someone and I enjoyed every single moment of it. I met amazing people here and listened to all their stories which was so touching. And I made many friends as well. Then I experienced something that I never did before, which was teaching. I felt so overwhelmed where students were so into my lesson and they were all so willing to learn. I really have to thank African Impact for this amazing experience
One of the most amazing adventure in my life
August 23, 2018by: Annamaria - ItalyIt was a life-changing experience that opened my mind and the overall view I had about certain situations. The group was fantastic and so supportive! Everything was well organised. The activities were amazing and I had so much fun!
Very bad organisation but really good volunteering experience
August 17, 2018by: patzg - FranceBad organisation. No communication between the coordinators and the volunteers. Nonetheless, I've met nice people here and the cultural immersion was amazing. I really enjoyed teaching and exchanging with my adult students.
An experience to do

Amazing experience
August 10, 2018by: Alicebrb - IranThis project has been an amazing experience, it has been a full immersion in a completely different way of living, different but magical. The staff, as well as local people, are always ready to help you if you need something. The teaching experience made me grow a lot, the kids as well as the adult teachers taught me new things and made me feel proud for my little contribution.
Greatest experience
July 27, 2018by: Moayad - Saudi ArabiaIt is really an amazing experience. The kids and adults you teach are just so nice and eager to learn. The feeling you get when you’re teaching and giving people what you have is just priceless. Thnx
Not what I expected
July 27, 2018by: l999999 - United KingdomThe experience volunteering definitely wasn't what I expected, with the food, cold showers and day to day life definitely more tasking than I was expecting. It is a very repetitive experience with daily life and meals always the same every week and this definitely diminished the enjoyability of the experience in my eyes.
Hello Lucy,

Thanks so much for your feedback and we are sorry to hear that the experience wasn’t what you expected. We do try very hard to prepare our volunteers before arriving on what to expect, but understand that visiting a rural community in Zanzibar can be quite a ‘culture shock’. We pride ourselves in giving volunteers an authentic, active, immersive experience (which does involve a lot of hard work!), but we will take this into consideration and make it clearer in our literature. Thanks again for your feedback and we’d welcome a conversation if you would like to discuss your experience further.

The African Impact Team
My experience with African Impact
July 27, 2018by: Jessicaframpton - United KingdomSuch an incredible experience that I would highly recommend. You are made a part of the community and get to know each one of your students. Every time you walk around the village everyone is so welcoming and has so much respect for you as a teacher, it is amazing.

I will definetly use this experience in my further life! Also appreciate more the little things in life is a thing that a will do more in life, because you can do so many things with limited resources. Thank you so much, African Impact!!

July 20, 2018by: Niels - BelgiumThis experience changed my view on my further life completely, wonderfull experience which I recommend to everyone who loves children and wants to help the African community with teaching and lots of other stuff and of course to explore Zanzibar.
Such an amazing project
July 02, 2018by: Beth Phillips - United KingdomSuch an amazing project that I feel blessed to have been a part of. Over the past 4 weeks I don't think I could have asked for a better experience, I've felt so welcomed into the community and have never met friendlier and funnier people with such character than the locals in Jambiani. I have enjoyed every second of teaching adult English, helping the students progress and expand their knowledge and most importantly getting to know them individually as each as they're all such interesting characters and a joy to teach and be around, I will most definitely miss it. An unforgettable experience and I wouldn't have changed a thing.
One of my best experiences
June 25, 2018by: Bridie - FranceMy three week stay in Jambiani has truly been one of the best experiences of my life. I came not knowing what to expect but have loved every day. The house is amazing with a 5 star view, the food a great mix between local and western and the staff and locals are all so friendly and welcoming that i felt part of the community. Teaching the adult classes wa my favourite part as I came to know my students really well and it was so fulfilling to teach them something they were obviously eager to learn. The trips were also awesome, my favourite being to the pongumi sandbank.Thank you to African Impact for this amazing experience. I couldn't recommend this project enough!
Lucy Jambiani
June 18, 2018by: Lucy Jambiani - United KingdomMy experience with African Impact in Jambiani has been incredible. Having only spent two weeks here, I feel that I have had the opportunity to interact with local community and really made an impact teaching English to adult students. Overall, I believe I experienced just a fraction of what Jambiani has to offer and would have loved to stay longer to really see the difference I could make in the long term. All the staff were great and really helpful in making me feel welcome and settled into the project, and the weekends spent exploring Zanzibar were also unforgettable.
Ody's review
June 04, 2018by: ody - SwitzerlandThis was a great experience, the local people were adorable. Living with other volunteers was really nice. The weeks are really full. Time flies. It's a phenomenal feeling to see the students improving their skills.
Beautiful Jambiani!
May 18, 2018by: Nat - AustraliaI had an amazing experience doing the teaching project in Zanzibar for four weeks. It was like nothing else I've ever done before! The children at the nursery schools are gorgeous. Teaching adult English classes at the African Impact Community Centre was so much fun and was a great opportunity to meet the locals. I feel like I was able to contribute to the community and got to know the real Zanzibar including the people, food, culture and way of living.

January 26, 2018by: Janine.Kopf - SwitzerlandVery positive experience, would do it again. I gained a lot of new insights in to a totally different world and really have the feeling the project is making good progress to leave a sustainable impact here in Jambiani for all the Locals. Also the team around Lisa, especially Claudy and Tessi are incredibly helpful and nice.
My dear Zanzibar
December 15, 2017by: Nathan - BelgiumThank you for everything, the sounds, the landscape, the people, the tastes, the experience. you helped me to grow, you helped me to open and prepare myself for another kind of world. you just got me out of my bubble. nakupenda.
Must do volunteer project
December 07, 2017by: Emerson Malungo - BrazilI have volunteered in some different places before Zanzibar and they were all very good. However, Zanzibar project mix the best of all the projects. You do a lot of teaching, you are really in the community and keep in touch with them all day long. The place is also very beautiful and has a lot of different activities to do, like snorkeling or just walk on the beach that is right in front of the house. So, if you are thinking about joining a volunteer project, really consider coming to Zanzibar.
Jambiani - Nahid
November 17, 2017by: Nahid - United KingdomOverall the experience is special and rewarding especially when you see the real impact that African Impact evidently has on lives in Jambiani. The volunteering is tough and takes some getting used to but once settled is quite enjoyable.

Volunteering in paradise
September 18, 2017by: Hanne - BelgiumZanzibar is such a beautiful island and I got the opportunity to volunteer here. The atmosphere in the volunteer house was really amazing. Every volunteer has his own stories and life experience, it is really amazing to share that with each other. The local people are so friendly and they really love it to have you here. You can really help this people. The teaching is amazing, I really can't describe the feeling.

More and more amazing than how I expected!
August 25, 2017by: Giulia Vanzella - ItalyI didn't expect an experience so amazing. The group of volunteers was fantastic, we were from different countries and had different ages, and it was cool to share an experience like this. Children and teachers of the nursery schools are fantastic, and the adult people who came for the adult lessons of the afternoon to. And the staff of African Impact is so helpful, friendly and funny!

Zanzibar Volunteering
August 24, 2017by: Grace - United KingdomThis program was incredibly enjoyable. Being a part of it has allowed me to experience Zanzibar in a unique way which brought me a more intimate insight into the island and the culture. My trip in Zanzibar
August 23, 2017by: belgian girl - BelgiumThis trip was an incredible experience that I will never forget. During 4 weeks, I have spent my time to teach some amazing people, I have also met a lot of people from all other the world. This experience made me scared because I came alone, I didn't speak very well English but after maybe 1 week, I was like at home. This experience made me more confidence and its maybe one of the best experience of my life
An inspirational experience!
August 23, 2017by: Nicole - United KingdomI volunteered on the teaching project in Jambiani for 4 weeks this July/August and I couldn't be more pleased with my choice of project and location. It has been so inspiring working as part of the local community, who not only view you as one of their teachers but also as a member of their community. The local people and staff on the project could not have made me feel any more welcome to the area and the project. It has been so enlightening not only teaching the nursery and adult classes, but also learning from them. To begin with, the thought of teaching nursery classes who speak very little English was definitely a daunting idea but this soon became easier thanks to the buckets of support offered if and when we felt we needed it. This has definitely been the best experience of my life and I thank African Impact and the people of Jambiani for providing it for me! ♥
Best days of my life
August 23, 2017by: natty - GreeceOne of the best experiences so far. You are supposed to come as a volunteer to offer whatever you can, but the things you gain are valuable life lessons. every day you learn sth new and how to appreciate simple things and great people in your life. The two weeks here taught me how to smile and ....Hakuna matata! The tans will fade soon but the memories will stay forever
Perhaps the most grateful student you'll ever have the opportunity to teach!
August 15, 2017by: xlauraschmidtx - DenmarkThe highlight of my daily life here though have been to teach the Remedial English Class. Experiencing the enthusiasm and eagerness to learn that radiates from the students have made a big impact on me. I treasured these afternoon where we as teachers had the opportunity to introduce adults to the English language through games and fun interaction. I will never forget the genuine gratitude from this amazing group of students, who now has a special place in my heart.
Teaching in paradise
August 14, 2017by: Manuela - AustriaBeing part of the Teaching and Community Project in Jambiani was one of the most rewarding experiences I have ever had. I met so many nice people along the way, both locals and staff members of African Impact, and loved every moment of my time here on Zanzibar. I had the feeling that I have become part of community within only 4 weeks and that was amazing. Teaching in nurseries and adult classes was great, a lot of fun and sometimes a little challenging, but all in all I am grateful for every moment and everything that I've learned. I had the best time and will remember this project forever.
One of the best experience of my life !
August 11, 2017by: Lyna Seridji - FranceI was a volunteer for 2 weeks in Zanzibar doing the teaching project and I loved this experience. Zanzibar (Jambiani) is a safe place to stay. People are very friendly and respectful. The children are lovely and you get attached to them very quickly. Teaching was so rewarding. I felt very useful and think that I made a real difference for the Jambiani Community.
Hakuna matata or making an impact in Zanzibar
August 11, 2017by: Anonymous - ItalyVolunteering in Zanzibar was the best decision I've ever made. Teaching kids, adults and other teachers has been an epic experience, probably making more of an impact on me than I could ever make on them.

August 10, 2017by: Cornelia - AustriaReview on my stay in Zanzibar for two weeks teaching children, adults and also helping in community projects. Arrival date: 31.7, departure: 14.8. Place: Jambiani, African Impact, Zanzibar.
Best experience of my life
August 10, 2017by: Federica Tornaghi - ItalyThis experience has been perfect, nothing went wrong. It gave me so much and I gave my 100% back. Review 2017
August 07, 2017by: Annina - SwitzerlandComing to Africa was definitely one of the best decisions I have ever made. It was such an amazing experience meeting all the new people here and being a true part of the community. It is really different coming here as a tourist or coming here as a volunteer. Ive had the chance and opportunity to meet incredible people and it is insane to see how much effort and work the people from African Impact put in to make life a bit better for the people here. The project itself is incredible and i think it has a huge influence on the inhabitants life swell. Without African Impact the schools would definitely not run the same as they do now so i would definitely recommend everyone to support this amazing company. The place were the house is located is so nice and beautiful and the trip here sometimes made me feel as if i was on holiday. The mixture of work and fun was brilliant and well balanced. throughout the week it is hard work to do but i always fell asleep with a smile on my face. for the weekend you're free to do whatever you want and that was great because so we've had the chance to explore the island and get to know different parts of it as well. over all i can say that it is true what was said at the beginning of the presentation: the amount of effort you put in is the output the community gives back to you
Best experience of my life so far
August 04, 2017by: Bea ML - ItalyBefore leaving I was really scared, because I did not know what I would have found here. But when I got in Jambiani, I was so happy! I met tons of local people, from the teachers to my own students, who now are my friends. I know that I will keep them in my heart forever, because they gave me so much. I really loved being here and I'm really sad to leave, but I know for sure that one day I will come back!
An incredible experience
August 04, 2017by: Chiara - ItalyI'm feeling a new person. I really grow up during this experience. I'm feeling more than just a student, I'm feeling like an helpful person, like a person who can do something of good for other people.
Zanzibar teaching project African Impact
July 28, 2017by: Steph - CanadaI spent countless hours looking online and researching for a project that would give me the absolute best experience for my time in Africa. I found African Impact while looking amongst many different companies and it looked the most promising. The reasonable program fee, the location, the pictures, the project all sounded great. To start, the location is breathtaking. We've done so many things here involving the ocean, lounging at resorts on weekends, swimming with dolphins, working out on the beach in the morning, snorkeling...etc. Mind you, these things did cost extra and all the activities that we do in the house are mostly not covered by your fee ie. bbq's, transport, excursions, local meals...etc.The food was alright, definitely not what i'm used to but I am a picky eater. I have become more of an adventurous eater here id say. Not a bad thing whatsoever. The staff in the impact house are incredible and live extraordinary, adventurous lives.I needed some medical attention on my trip and staff bent over backwards to ensure i got everything I needed. They all genuinely care about you and your well being. Feels like a home away home in the house. People come from all over the world into the house and quickly become best of friends. I spent 2 weeks on the project and I feel as though I could stay for much longer. The days are long and hard work sometimes- lots of pre planning for classes and the children are full of energy. The experiences with the sweet children in the schools and the inspiring adults in class is so rewarding. You wouldn't think that 2 weeks would make such a difference but it really does in both your lives and the students. Zanzibar is perfect. You get to help out in an African community while living in a holiday spot. I have never experienced such a welcoming community than here in Zanzibar. After my 2 weeks im heading into main land to do Kilimanjaro and a Safari. Definitely can't do these things on a weekend so it would be good to tack it on to the beginning or end of your trip. Great close location, amazing people, stunning culture, fantastic experience. 10/10 would recommend. I've never done anything like this in my life and I know 100 percent that this trip is going to make such an impact in my life and hopefully i've impacted those here in Africa. My trip isn't even over yet and I know without a doubt in my mind that I will be back soon.
I had an amazing time
July 28, 2017by: alice - BelgiumI had an amazing time here in Jambiani. The people are very kind and you feel very welcome from the moment you arrive in Jambiani. July 28, 2017by: Ellen - United KingdomI have really enjoyed my experience working with the local community, the community were so appreciative of everything we did and were always so cheerful and enthusiastic. I wish I could stay longer!!
My 2 weeks in Zanzibar
July 27, 2017by: Anonymous - SwedenI arrived in Zanzibar with fairly high expectations of both the island and the project. Luckily both Zanzibar and the project exceeded my expectations by far. Photos cannot do Zanzibar justice and the people of Jambiani are exceptionally friendly. The project does make a huge impact locally and you really feel that you are part of something important. If you get the chance joint \he project ,don't hesitate.
My unforgettable first experience in Africa
July 21, 2017by: fede - ItalyThis experience was absolutely amazing! these three weeks changed me and my perspective of life. I made many friends from all over the world and was able to help change others lives. so thank you everybody!
What an African Impact
July 21, 2017by: Loes - BelgiumThis project is even better than expected. In one day you teach little kids, adults and local ladies. They are so motivated to learn English and so thankful to the volunteers. But those are not the only ones who learn. "when one teaches, two learn" And that's exactly what I did. African Impact had a big impact on me, and I will never forget this!!!
My trip was africamazing!
July 21, 2017by: SarahBogaerts - BelgiumIt was my first time in Africa and I absolutely loved it. The community in Jambiani is so welcoming and loving, you feel right at home. Everyday is a busy day, but it always feels like a holiday. You get to meet so many lovely, grateful people while being on the project, I can hardly describe it as work!
Zanzistar
July 18, 2017by: Savo - SwitzerlandI had a very good time here and it was an amazing experience. As we arrived during Ramadan, we had the chance to see the village and the people living here in this special time. The teaching in adult classes, the playing with the kids at the beach, the conservation club and the dinner at a local woman were highest lights I had during my 4 weeks. As after work activity I liked the sunset barbecue the most, it was very beautiful! I will go home with a lot of good memories :)
My time in Zanzibar
July 18, 2017by: simba - SwitzerlandI had an amazing time in Zanzibar. The staff is great and super friendly. They give their best to make sure you feel comfortable and enjoy your stay 100%. The students at the schools are all very grateful and it was amazing to see the effort they make. The most important part was probably that not only you can teach them but that they can teach you a lot of interesting stuff about their culture and country at the same time.
Volunteer to remember
July 14, 2017by: BigDuggan - CanadaI remember looking out the plane window and seeing Zanzibar for the first time and all its beauty and just took a big breathe in and thought this is going to be one great trip. I spent the night in stone town at a local hotel and i was picked up by the Africa Impact team in the morning. We went to the airport and picked up more volunteers then headed on a beautiful drive through the island to the little village of Jambiani. Once we arrived at the Africa Impact house we were greeted by a welcoming staff and other volunteers. They gave us an informative Information session about the program and all the beautiful things to do on and off the island. Once we started teaching classes it changed my life. You connect with the locals on a way deeper level then you ever thought possible. The kids will take your heart and the adults will give you inspiration to want to teach more and to give more back to them. This whole trip from seeing a new culture and a totally different way of life to walking on white sandy beaches and swimming in the warm Indian Ocean is worth every penny you would pay to come. The students are very welcoming and eager to learn which makes teaching them a lot more interactive and fun. I hope if you read this that you will feel what I experienced and that you choose to enjoy a fun humbling experience for yourself and come see the beautiful island of Zanzibar.
Jambiani experience
July 14, 2017by: Ann-Maree - AustraliaI have thoroughly enjoyed my experience at Jambiani. A welcome team of program leaders who made my transition to African time easy, a friendly community and an amazing location. The team also provided a very clear overview of what I could expect before I arrived and suggestions on what would be useful for me to bring with me.
Jambiani
July 10, 2017by: EliEis - ItalyMy time here in Jambiani has been incredible, I've learned a lot, not only in the meaning of teaching, but also in meaning of experiencing new things. Everything here was managed so well that i have never felt uncomfortable.
Zanzibar
June 02, 2017by: shonap - United KingdomOverall, a great experience. Working within the community was a great cultural experience and teaching students was very rewarding. However, i think if the volunteer schedule was a bit less demanding the volunteers would be able to have a bit more time to enjoy being on such a beautiful island and have some fun.
My time in Zanzibar
June 02, 2017by: victoriamiron - CanadaI had such an amazing time in Zanzibar. Volunteering in paradise
May 26, 2017by: Inneke - BelgiumVolunteering in Jambiani, Zanzibar was the best experience in life! The staff is amazing, you get enough support. And the community is one of the loveliest, amazing community that I have been in. I will come back!
Zanzibar <3
May 23, 2017by: Amber Muns - NetherlandsI had such a great experience here in Zanzibar. Everyone makes you feel home so quickly, the locals, the staff and the other volunteers. The connection with the students (nursery and adults) is incredible. They are so motivated to learn English and appreciate it so much that you are helping them to learn that. I would recommend a project like this to everyone to see how people live here and feel the connecting with the locals from here.
My experience as a volunteer
May 12, 2017by: Samantha Biart - NetherlandsEven though I have only stayed here for 3 weeks, my time here has been amazing. The staff and community are so heart warming that you walk around with a smile everyday. It has inspired me so much, that I'm fundraising for the project! It's an experience I will never forget.
Zanzibar experience
April 21, 2017by: Caroline - AustriaMy stay in Zanzibar was unfortunately rather short, two weeks -which to some might sound a reasonable amount of time, as it did to me at first. However, in an exciting place like Jambiani time flies. After having a couple of days to adjust and prepare for the teaching I had a great time delivering my knowledge to the students and it was very exciting and wonderful to build a connection with each student. I would definitely try to stay longer if I get the opportunity to come back to this magical place.
My volunteer experience
March 27, 2017by: Tamar - IsraelI have been in the volunteering for a month, i had an amazing experience, the other volunteers were very nice, the people from the village were kind and nice. just one thing that was not good its the administration. the manager wasn't good manager her didn't know hoe to deal with the volunteers, he treat us like we are working for him. in general the whole administration wasn't organize.
Dear Tamar.

Thank you for your review and taking the time to offer us your thoughts.

We appreciate your comments and points regarding areas that can improved within the project, particularly regarding the information you received before project and support you received during your time with us.

We attempt to ensure that throughout our detailed pre-arrival communication and during your welcome induction that we cover the key areas of the Project, specifically by providing you with a Weekly Schedule before your arrival and by directing you to our permanent wall-mounted version. Additionally we also do everything in our power to ensure that you receive the preparation information and delivery guidance you need to deliver key elements of the project such as Teach the Teachers, we encourage all our Volunteers to attend weekly preparation meetings to ensure that they receive the appropriate information and as Staff we retain an ‘open door policy’ 12 hours a day to ensure that you have every opportunity to bring such concerns and worries to us during your time at project rather than at the conclusion.

We will ensure in the future that we are more forthcoming with our requests for feedback and individual perception of progress, thank you for raising this point.
In regards to the support you receive in engaging with the Nursery Children and Local community through their native language (Swahili), we provide twice weekly lessons and ready guidance from all our local staff which we highly encourage all Volunteers to attend to ensure that they do not experience similar difficulties to the ones you highlight. We share your disappointment that you feel you were unable to communicate with them effectively. Again, we encourage all Volunteers to raise these and similar challenges with us during their stay so we are able to work together to overcome them, rather than at the end.

Thank you for taking the time to share with us your experiences and thoughts.

Kind Regards,

The Zanzibar Team.
2 amazing months
March 10, 2017by: zuzu ali - BelgiumI spent 2 months in the project, my first week was a little bit slow because everything was new but my 8 weeks went so fast and I can't believe that it's the end, it was incredible, I will not forget!
African Impact Jambiani
February 17, 2017by: Anonymous - BrazilI was very happy with the experience The program is very well run and the staff very supporting in many different levels You can see that the project really contributes to the local community and the volunteers are always welcomed no matter where they go Living in Zanzibar is incredible; Jambiani is a unique place with incredible beach. The project is amazing!!! Very well recommended
My time in Jambiani
February 14, 2017by: olivialaing - BelgiumI stayed in Jambiani for two weeks and volunteered. I was in the teaching project, I loved teaching the kids. They gave me back so much joy and love. I will take a lot of wisdom with me when I leave, it was a wonderful experience I will never forget.
Teaching project
February 02, 2017by: Cara - AustraliaAfrican Impact do such a great job in ensuring that the communities needs are always the number one priority. As a volunteer it is incredible to see how much of a difference we can make. This project is seriously incredible.
Overall experience
January 31, 2017by: Joyce - NetherlandsThe month in Zanzibar was wonderful. I met a lot of amazing people. Not only the other volunteers, but also the students, the local people and the teachers were so nice. I really feel like I made an impact at the schools and at the land where we were teaching adults. The house was nice and the bedroom and bathroom were clean. The only thing that was missing, was a place where everybody could sit and relax after a long day.
Zanzibar - the perfect place to volunteer
January 28, 2017by: Tanya Hauswirth - SwitzerlandI have had an amazing time here in Zanzibar, you can live so close with the local people and learn to understand their culture and way of living. The students really want to learn something and are open for everything and you notice that they really want to learn something and they respect you, even though you aren't a real teacher. The project managers informed us well, and the mood in the house, between the volunteers and the staff was great. The activities out of the project were very nice and we enjoyed a lot of different things at the weekends. If i have the opportunity I loved to come back once :)
Zanzibar teaching and community project
January 20, 2017by: SanSiBo - GermanyThis was my second time on the project and I loved it as much as I did the first time. It is such a unique experience here and it is amazing to directly live in the village with the people next door. It is so great to see how much they welcome us being here and how much every student enjoys the lessons. Each lesson you finish gives you the feeling that you really can make an impact.
My Zanzibarian experience
December 02, 2016by: Mari Gwenllian - United KingdomMy time with African Impact has been amazing! The location of the project is overwhelming and the interaction between volunteers and the community is incredible. I personally have never experienced anything so rewarding.
My time in Zanzibar
December 01, 2016by: paulgermany - GermanyI have been to Zanzibar for two month in total. Jambiani is a lovely village with friendly people who made me enjoy every day I spent on this island. I think I learned a lot during my work as a volunteer and saw many awesome things. But I will also never forget the sad things such as poverty and lack of medical supply. All in all I can say that i had a great time with interesting and friendly people who made my stay on Zanzibar unforgettable. The only thing I regret is that I didn't do all the trips and tours on the weekends to explore the whole island.
My volunteering experience in Zanzibar
November 28, 2016by: issiedolan - United KingdomMy experience has been an incredible one. I have learnt and grown so much in only 3 weeks, interacting with entirely different people and cultures. I have enjoyed every minute of my time here, and I am sad to be leaving, but I am leaving with a totally different mindset, appreciation for the little things in life, and a hugely rewarding story behind my time here in Jambiani. It will be an experience with me for life.
Highlights of my AI experience
November 04, 2016by: Mayonaise - BelgiumIt was an amazing experience to teach with African Impact, the people, the environment and the children. It felt so nice being a little part of this community and help with the education of the children and adults of all age. But my experience here in Jambiani thought me way more then i have thought to the children. It thought me how to be responsible, how you can be kind in any way of life, how even the smallest things can make someone smile and grateful we have to be for what we already have.
African Impact experience
October 10, 2016by: Jessie - AustraliaThe volunteering experience has been good. The teaching has been great although you need to know a lot about the English language (grammar, writing, reading etc) before teaching a adult class. The nursery classes were always fun and the students are always eager to learn. I recommend this experience as it is a once in a life-time opportunity.
African Impact Zanzibar education & community development
September 30, 2016by: Yaz Amin - United KingdomI spent 3 weeks in Zanzibar on this project, which have been so amazing. The project is extremely well organised and you are well supported throughout your stay, both on project and in leisure time!!!
People must live this at least once in their life
September 06, 2016by: Tommso Castoldi - ItalyThis community gave me the opportunity to live, learn and understand the world a little bit more. If you think about it this could be the definition of EXPERIENCE. Being on this project and living with people that find" brushing their teeth" and "wishing their hands" something extraordinary has been an astonishing fact. I thank this month because it gave me a different prospective on the world I live in. Gong to a local dinner and see that these women are giving you more than what they have just to make you feel comfortable has made me think on our western jealousy and selfishness. to conclude, Thank you Jambiani.
My review
September 01, 2016by: Klaudia B - IsraelHad a great time! High above my expectations! You get the opportunity to meet new people, culture, habits and lifestyle. Be part of the community. Recommend to everyone have such an amazing experience :)
Teaching and community project - Zanzibar
August 24, 2016by: Eliza - United KingdomI've spent two weeks here in Jambiani; having volunteered previously, I have been totally impressed by the way that African Impact is run in order to ensure the best outcomes for the community it supports. There is a wonderful sense of partnership with the locals, meaning you are always met with a warm welcome, The project supports people of many ages, providing education in order to allow the people of Jambiani to support themselves sustainably. One of the most rewarding parts for me has been teaching a small adult class who choose to come for their own knowledge to enhance their opportunities in life; being a part of that is an incredible thing. I've enjoyed every minute, have met some lovely people along the way and learnt many life lessons!
Cute but unsustainable in Zanzibar
August 21, 2016by: Simon Edman - SwedenThe teaching and community project in Jambiani, Zanzibar, promises amazing surroundings and a true impact on the local community. That is partly true, the site is beautiful and the locals are interesting and normally fantastic to interact with! The African Impact organization on site have cute ideas for how to make an impact on the community. Cute, but not sustainable. This is a very good destination if you are an inexperienced teen and requires detailed schedules in advance which you don't need to plan yourself. When you feel that the possibility to take part has to be more important than the actual impact. Unfortunately, African Impact tweaks that picture a little. I am a teacher, educated in environmental sustainable development and multiple times volunteer. My conclusion was unfortunately that none of the activities offered at the site today is actually sustainable. However good African Impact makes it all sound, it is not sustainable to fly in people from across the world to paint houses (when a local painter of course would have done a better job and get a job opportunity) or litter picking without continuously involving the locals as part of a long term and well planned environmental project. There are even environmental activities that are called 'recycling', even though they don't actually involve any recycling. Neither is it sustainable to fly people in to teach subjects they are not educated to do. To teach English in an European school requires several years of university studies, but at African Impact in Zanzibar it is obviously considered a hobby. The locals in Jambiani deserves the same quality of education as everyone else and there is no reason to see their education as 'whoever, however'. A positive attitude and even good knowledge in English does not mean that you know how to teach it. As a volunteer project, which is a form of charity, the African Impact teaching and community project is to much Hakuna matata and not enough professionality. Charity is not to lure as many volunteers in as possible, it is to secure the quality by engaging people with the right skills or utilizing different skills for different parts of the project. Above is simply my honest analysis of the project. If you think differently and believes this project is right for you, then make sure you ask African Impact for a detailed description of how your money will be used. Do that before you pay the deposit, since you have the right to know.
Dear Simon,

Thank you very much for your feedback and we appreciate the points that you've raised, however we feel that we need to give further information regarding our activities and structure to give you some context.

Firstly, you arrived during the Ramadan period, where based on consultation with our community partners, we adjust our program to accommodate the local people who are fasting. This was communicated to you prior to your arrival and as discussed at that time, our planning schedules do change over this period. It is important to be flexible, understanding and appreciative that our work is fully-dependent on the needs of the Jambiani community at that specific time, who were celebrating a very holy holiday.

During Ramadan, we do take part in more refurbishment and clean-up projects as requested by the community, but we do continue to run free informal English classes that are open to anyone in Zanzibar, as well as help with village needs as raised to us in the monthly local government meetings.

Our informal education classes in Jambiani are designed for people who cannot access formal education, to get them to a level where they can participate in standard educational options or obtain jobs in the tourism area, which forms the backbone of Zanzibar's economy. We also accept students who want to supplement their official education in our informal classes.

As you've mentioned, we do have a very set schedule for these classes because despite these classes being informal, we want them to be as sustainable and structured as possible for the students. We've worked with qualified teachers across our projects to design structures and curricula to ensure we cover the topics needed for future formal education or employment.

The programs are designed so that is easy to understand for both the student and the volunteer coming in to teach. This structure means that even though we have different volunteers coming through, there is a common learning experience for the student and a set curriculum for each class. We can therefore help our volunteers prepare for class each week during the preparation sessions and ensure they cover all the topics they need to during their time in the class.

If we were to allow people to come in every few weeks and teach what they want in class, we feel that this would not be sustainable and not in line with our and the community's aims.

Since our project started, the majority of students who finish our higher classes have gone on to secure further education in Stone Town, the Jambiani Tourism Institute, or secured client facing roles in the tourism industry. As you mentioned, the people of Jambiani deserve better education and what we're doing is trying to fill that gap so that they can gain access to formal education to help improve their livelihoods.

Secondly, the painting that took place during your time with us was at the request of the nursery school with which we work, who wanted us to help improve the children's working and learning environment. This was overseen by our local project manager, Dulla, who is significantly experienced in these activities. For larger work, including the building of our new Education Centre, we of course hire local skilled craftsmen.

Community buy-in is the key to our volunteer programs and without a need, or long-term sustainable plan, we do not operate. We are extremely proud of the relationship we have with the community of Jambiani and will continue to work closely with them for years to come.

Thank you again for your feedback Simon, we do want to ensure that while we not only serve the communities in need, we also ensure our volunteers have a positive experience and have certainly taken your feedback on-board.

The African Impact Team
Unreliable organisation
August 21, 2016by: Sherin Shali - SwedenThe program is enjoyable for youth who wish to get in contact with the local population. The staff is generally nice and between 20 and 30 years of age. They are helpful as long as you don't question the planning or the project in general. The project is based on teaching English and strengthen the grammar skills of the local students. That is a good thought, but unfortunately you teach something else than the project organisation claims. I asked in advance for a work plan since I did not feel very confident when it comes to English grammar and the staff replied that I shouldn't worry and that we would plan upon arrival. One week before the project start date I got a non negotiable schedule stating that I was going to paint walls, pick litter on the beach and teach English 1,5 hours a day, (since it was Ramadan. Normally it is 3 hours. Some of the activities are the same even when it’s not Ramadan), I was also informed that I would take part in weekly lesson planning together with other volunteers. Once on site it turned out that the planning was a mere half hour together with a coordinator without teaching experience or even teacher education. To get more support they suggested I would accompany a volunteer who had been at the project for a longer period of time, but it turned out that the teaching experience of that volunteer only consisted of three weeks being at the site and Ramadan started. I have been working as a support teacher and have some experience of how to help young people with difficulties. I was shocked when I noticed how the volunteer who was supposed to be experienced and a support for me was teaching. A week before exams used’s most of the lesson to tell jokes and teach the students another language than English. Some other volunteers knew even less grammar than the students and yet when the day of exams had passed, no student had passed the exam. You cannot teach English on that low level, which I discussed with the staff. They stressed that the program gives the locals a chance to learn English when they cannot afford formal education. However, the level of the program was so low that it would not make any considerable difference. And if it will be, it will not be about teaching English its more about to get contact with local people and practicing everyday English. Impact only seemed to fool the locals into thinking that we knew what we were doing. There were two staff members with an 'English as a foreign language' education, but none of them took part in the actual activities. Instead the activities are run by inexperienced and uneducated staff. Nobody I worked with knew how to teach or to solve problems associated with teaching. Many students knew how to take part in simple conversations, but I believe they had learned that from talking to the islands numerous tourists rather than from African Impact's teaching program. During community project we were painting a school, but the paint started to come of before we had even finished. We cannot have used the best method, so apparently none within the group had the know how. I do not know why a local specialist weren't employed to help us out with this. When I tried to discuss all these issues with the local staff, they said that there was nothing they could do. But when I discussed with the head office later on, they said the issues would have been solved if I had discussed with the local staff instead. I even asked about how they use my money (since it's very expansive and we did not got enough of food every meal and some of teenager had to put back of his food so that would be enough for all), I got a general information as answer. The local staff also pointed out that being there during Ramadan means less teaching and fewer tasks, but other volunteers who had stayed for longer said it was the same before Ramadan had started. In total, the whole experience seemed to be like youth camp not serious teaching volunteer organisation. My advice check carefully all information you receive. You do not know who really are working in the organisation since there is no site which presents the stuff.

My experience volunteering for African Impact Zanzibar
August 15, 2016by: Sofie - NorwayMy volunteering experience at African Impact Zanzibar was overall very good. The location is amazing, the local food and people as well. It was amazing getting to know so many new people, as this was my first time traveling alone. The African Impact House is cozy in I like how we live together. On the other hand, I was quite disappointed when I arrived, as we were not very warmly welcomed. I missed the enthusiasm from the project coordinators. There was also quite a lack of information as we were all teaching alone and literally thrown into the classes without much explanation or help. I felt like I knew the drill after a day or two, but it would have been nice with a bit more guiding. All in all, a very good experience, the staff is nice, Jambiani is beautiful and the people I met I will never forget.
The project is not professional
August 10, 2016by: Rochale - IsraelThe project is not professional. We pay an about 100$ per a day. How is the money used, we cant see. no methods, no equipment, no teachers. all what we have is only the donations that the volunteers brought. We don't understand the children, they don't understand us. What can 19 years old volunteer do in 2-4 weeks?
Amazing social experience!
August 10, 2016by: Malika - NetherlandsI had a really great time in Zanzibar volunteering with African Impact. It's a cool exchange of cultures and sustainable ideas! You get in touch with the local community and everyone is learning from each other.
3 weeks on Zanzibar
August 05, 2016by: Gam - BelgiumThough teaching small kids who do not always understand what you are saying can sometimes be exhausting, the marks they give you will stay forever. Hearing them screaming “teacher teacher” as soon as they see you biking, seeing those kids sharing their candies even if they have few are priceless. Indeed those who have less are those who share the most. We tend to forget that with all the things we have and take for granted. Having met Maasais by teaching them English will probably remain my favourite part of the project. Seeing the happiness on their face when they remember and understand are priceless. They just are amazing persons.
Community project experience
July 29, 2016by: Zanzibari Experience - United KingdomThis experience was a good way to gain some confidence in teaching especially if you have never done it before. We spent 4 days in the week teaching English to 2 nurseries and 1 adult class, Fridays are reserved for eco bricking and other chores that are needed to be done on the new school that is being built. We teach a total of 4.5 hours per day and it can become very overwhelming especially in the nursery classes because the children sometimes forget that you are a teacher and like to play around when you need their attention. The first day volunteering can be a bit confusing because very few instructions are given, but when so many volunteers are entering the place it can be understandable that it is overwhelming for the staff to attend to everyone. The volunteers who have had been staying in the house were the most helpful in my opinion. They helped explain everything to me, the times we were meant to leave to teach, where we need to go, what activities we can do during free time and so on. I was so lucky to have arrived at a time with some of the best volunteers. Weekends are the best because we get to explore as much of zanzibar as we can and afford to and especially with the other volunteers weekends are so much fun. During my teaching here for the past 2 weeks I feel as though the way in which the teaching is done in the nursery classes could be better improved. I feel as though there needs to be more communication and teaching with the teachers especially since these students lack some respect for us volunteers during our teaching, but will pay close attention to their own teachers. I also feel the verbal drilling that we run promotes the children to shout because we are just shouting words out to these kids without really getting them to understand what the words mean, especially since many of the volunteers do not understand the native language , Swahili, it is not easy to communicate the meaning to these children, which is why I think helping the teachers teach the kids these English words is a more effective way of teaching. Overall, this experience taught me to get out of my shell and try new things and gain some teaching experience and confidence in myself.
Volunteering in Africa for the first time
July 28, 2016by: A - Czech RepublicSince I've never been volunteering in Africa before, leaving for this project was full of mixed feelings and expectations. Now, after two weeks spend on the teaching and community project, I can say that there was nothing to worry about. Overall everything with the project went well plus I met many new and nice people, visited a country where I've never been before and got to know what the true African life is about.
Volunteering experience in Zanzibar
July 28, 2016by: lisa.k1504 - TanzaniaI was in zanzibar for 4 weeks and I enjoyed every day. We were 16 volunteers and we built a great community. If someone had problems, you just needed to ask the staff. In the morning, we taught at 2 nursery schools and in the evening I taught an adult class in kizimkazi. It was a lot of fun and i'm glad that I made this experience.
Balanced
July 01, 2016by: LidiaJoe - SpainI didn't know that this period was Ramadan, that's why I'm a bit disappointed, bc the schedule was different and we haven't done the activities that I expected, but the experience was great. Anyway I think the organization must be stricter with people, because there are many young people and they should listen to old people and try to get their expertise, that obviously young people don't have. That could be a way the improve the project.
Teaching and community project
June 17, 2016by: Messi - SwitzerlandI was nine weeks in the teaching and community project and I learned a lot of new things and I really enjoyed the time as a teacher. How to teach children in the nursery class and the adult class in kidenga.
Unforgettable experience
June 10, 2016by: Julia Walker - SwitzerlandMy time here in Jambiani was amazing! I didn't know what it will be like and it was totally new for me to be teaching, but my experience is only positive and I would recommend this project to everyone who would like to be part of a wonderful organization which has got a big impact. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Heaven is a place on earth!
June 01, 2016by: Oriya Geffen - IsraelThe 6 weeks on this project were amazing, it was a once in a lifetime experience and one I will always remember. we spent our days teaching nursery kids and adults, working on the land - planting trees and building a school from scratch(!!) using Eco bricks and eating dinners under the stars with local women, and the best part in all of it was living on Jambiani's amazing white sand beach. the staff were really supportive and helpful and my fellow volunteers were amazing - I couldn't ask for a better place to be in. I recommend this project for anyone who wants to make his little change in the world while living in Heaven with a warm and welcoming community!
All was well
June 01, 2016by: Tarik - TanzaniaThank God all was well. The vibes in Zanzibar encourages one to develop a positive character. Trying to adopt good qualities of the self here is easy because if you try to do so, you would be swimming with the tide as opposed to swimming against it.
Poa
June 01, 2016by: Omar Alireza - Saudi ArabiaPoa means all is good. In terms of housing and food everything was more than perfect. The best part of the experience is walking on the beach and starting random conversations with people you never met before. It is as if you knew them for life.
Loved it!
April 07, 2016by: Emily1997 - ZambiaI would highly recommend this project. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and all the people I met. I would suggest a long stay as it takes some time to adjust to the schedule and to really feel comfortable in what you are doing. The village is beautiful and so are the people that live there.
