What inspired you to work for the American University of Beirut — Mediterraneo (AUB Mediterraneo)?
The fact is that I hadn’t really heard about AUB Mediterraneo before joining the University. However, when I found out about the job vacancy, I thought that it was a fantastic opportunity for my professional development and a great step up for my career. Working at a university and engaging with students had always been a dream of mine, and I jumped at the chance when it presented itself.
I was impressed when I found out that AUB is listed as a top 250 university globally and has a 150-year history as one of the oldest universities in the region. As such, the role seemed to be quite challenging but also quite fulfilling, as it provided an opportunity to shape AUB Mediterraneo's image in my native country.
It is one of the most respected and prestigious universities in the area and I love being in a position where I can introduce AUB Mediterraneo to people in my generation who might not know about it.

What challenges are unique to your role and how do you overcome them?
Having no previous experience in a university, something challenging might come out daily. It is stimulating to be in an environment that strives for excellence because it is a lesson in the importance of setting high standards.
In my role as a graphic designer, it’s noteworthy that there are many elements to graphic design, however, most graphic designers have specialties. At AUB Mediterraneo I am involved in ALL areas. From designing documents, and preparing student IDs to web designing and video production, it is thrilling to explore all these fields of graphic design to complete an assignment or a project.
When challenges arise, I always try to remain positive and calm, and because I love finding solutions, I use my creativity for problem-solving.

You’ve interned in Amsterdam and visited Greece, Italy, the UK, and Austria. Knowing what you know now, what advice would you tell your pre-travel self?
When I’m travelling, I always try to learn about the culture of the city I am visiting before going there. Things like their habits, the way people might behave, and how they move around the city; considering these aspects helps me to blend into the culture. Additionally, I think it’s always nice to have a schedule, so I don’t lose track of the things I want to visit or do there.
Why should someone choose AUB Mediterraneo over competitors?
AUB has a long-standing reputation for academic excellence and along with its prestigious status as a leading institution in the region, it’s an ideal place for top faculty and students around the world to succeed and build the foundations for promising careers.
AUB Mediterraneo also consists of a unique blend of different cultures, Arabs, Europeans, Africans, Americans, and Asians. Having all these students from different regions working together, and sharing their traditions and thoughts will lead to great ideas.
Additionally, AUB Mediterraneo is in Pafos, a beautiful city located in the southwest of Cyprus. Pafos is known for its rich history, cultural diversity, and stunning beaches.

What is AUB Mediterreaneo’s mission and how do you continue to work toward it?
AUB Mediterraneo’s mission aligns with the values and principles of AUB, focusing on academic excellence, providing the best possible resources to its students and employees, diversity, community engagement, and global citizenship to fulfill its educational objective.
It all contributes to the development of Cyprus and the broader region. My focus is to visualize and help with spreading these messages and objectives to new audiences, as well as, maintaining the high level of standards AUB has set.

What do you hope students take away from their experience at AUB Mediterraneo?
Personally, I wish our students a fulfilling experience during their university years with us. When they reflect on this time in the future, my hope is that they recall it with fondness and nostalgia.
Why is it important for people to travel abroad and experience new cultures?
I always enjoyed travelling and when I plan to travel, I always get excited. It’s always interesting to visit new places, see how other people live, and see the world through their eyes.
For me, it’s also inspiring to visit places where famous people used to live or places where history has been made. Visiting, exploring new places, and tasting new food make me feel alive.
What does meaningful travel mean to you?
Meaningful travel for me means when you look back to a trip you made, and remember what a great time you had. I am not sure if there are travels that are not meaningful, especially if you are visiting a country for the first time, or you go somewhere even for a day.
If you dedicate some of your time to looking around, I am sure that you will discover or experience something new. We are usually tied up in our routines. I believe that traveling opens us to new perspectives, away from the usual and it makes us appreciate life.
