What inspired you to go abroad?

What inspired me to go abroad was the amazing stories I heard from my fellow Wellesley sibs. They'd always come back with countless stories about all the cool and fun things they experienced and the things they were able to see. I've always loved traveling, so hearing these stories made me more anxious and excited to go abroad. It is the best decision I have ever made.

Why did you choose College Year in Athens

I chose CYA because of the countless opportunities to travel while there. We visited so many other islands in Greece and we had free time to do our own travels as well. The program allows you to be immersed in Greek culture and is located in a central area in the city. Staff was always ready to help, answer questions, and guide you to some of the best local spots in the city.

What was your favorite part about Greece?

My favorite part about Greece was the people I met and encountered daily. They were so welcoming and made me feel at home. They accepted me into their culture, their environment, and their homes. The view and the food were the next best things.

What made your experience abroad unique?

What made my experience unique was the opportunity to do a homestay. Living with my Greek mom was amazing. She accepted, welcomed, and took care of me far beyond what I could have asked for.

How did local staff support you throughout your program?

Staff were always there to guide me around the city and answer any questions I had.

What's one thing you wish you would have done differently?

I wish I would have put myself out there more. Because it was a new environment, some amazing opportunities and encounters I could have had were really hindered by being afraid or fearful.

Describe a typical day in the life of your program.

A typical day consisted of class in the morning, working on homework in the afternoon at my favorite cafe Poco Poco, and spending time exploring afterwards. Exploring meant walking around different neighborhoods, shopping, and visiting museums. I'd hang out with friends in the evening and go home to have dinner with my Greek mom afterwards.

What did you enjoy doing in your free time?

In my free time I loooooved trying out new restaurants. There are so many amazing places to eat and enjoy Greek culture, especially tavernas. There was live music, dancing, wine, and great company.

What was your accommodation like? What did you like best about it?

I lived with a host family in an apartment. I had my own spacious, comfortable room. I loved the view from my balcony. I loved being able to learn about Greek culture first-hand.

What is one thing every participant should know before participating in your program?

Don't set expectations! Just let yourself experience and go through what you'll go through, taking it one day at a time. You'll miss home, but home is a FaceTime, text, or message away. Really enjoy the time you are there.

Now that you're home, how has your program abroad impacted your life?

My time abroad has influenced where I want to travel in the future and I can't stop talking about it to others!!

Would you recommend College Year in Athens to others? Why?

YES! You get to experience things you may have never experienced before, and above all you'll grow. It may get difficult at times being away from home and in a new environment, but the process is beyond worth it. You'll especially get to travel with CYA and meet some amazing professors who'll show you around and help you out themselves. This program gives you access to opportunities that many other programs are missing. Athens is amazing, Greece is beautiful, and Greeks will warmly welcome you.
