What inspired you to go abroad?

I’ve always wanted to establish my career in Europe and also travel extensively at the same time. The best thing about working and living in Europe is you can go to a different country within an hour.

Why did you choose Nomaden Berlin?

I chose Nomaden Berlin because they offered a package to suit my needs. I liked the fact that Nomaden Berlin has organized everything I needed in order to establish myself as an international business professional in Berlin. From accommodation to regular events where you can meet current and former program participants.

What was your favorite part about Berlin?

Berlin is definitely one of my favourite cities in the world. It’s a city rich in history, culture and perhaps has one of the best nightlife scenes out there.

What made your experience abroad unique?

Getting to know both locals and people from around the world. I have met so many interesting people who shared the same interests with me. I truly believe that living abroad will only broaden your knowledge about different cultures, and more people should do it.

How did local staff support you throughout your program?

Lana who is the Founder of Nomaden Berlin was extremely helpful from start to end. She has provided me with a lot of guidance during the entire process (job search, flat search etc.). My program has recently concluded but she’s still around if I need help with anything.

What's one thing you wish you would have done differently?

I should have relocated to Europe a lot earlier. As a Kiwi, I’m grateful that many European countries allow us to take part in their Working Holiday programs. It’s the perfect way to experience life as a local.

Describe a typical day in the life of your program.

A typical day would be attending an extensive German language course, going to a cool event somewhere in the city and also having some free time to do whatever you want.

What did you enjoy doing in your free time?

Checking out some of the cool bars that the city has to offer such as the rooftop bar called Klunkerkranich in Kreuzberg, and taking photos at some abandoned places in Berlin.

What was your accommodation like? What did you like best about it?

It’s a serviced apartment in Prenzlauer Berg where I shared the place with other four participants in the program. It’s located in a good spot where you can go to many interesting places within half an hour.

What is one thing every participant should know before participating in your program?

Be open-minded, soak in what Berlin has to offer and have fun.

What was the hardest part about working abroad?

Being away from family and not being able to converse in German. I’m trying to learn.

What surprised you most about Berlin?

Berlin has so many cool places and they’re hidden from the tourists. You just need to dig deeper and you’ll find them. There’s always something for everyone.

How difficult was it to communicate with locals?

It’s a hit and miss. I went to the post office the other day and the person who assisted me didn’t speak any English at all.

What is one thing you wish you would have known before working abroad in Germany?

That New Zealand has a special relationship with Germany. It means I will have the opportunity to extend my visa.

If you could work abroad again, where would you go?

I would still pick Germany. I see myself living and working here permanently.

What do you feel the biggest benefit of working abroad is?

You get to experience life from a different perspective, and it helps you grow not just on a personal level but also on a professional level.

Do you have any packing tips for individuals headed to Berlin?

Pack light. Cost of living in Berlin is cheaper compared to other Western European capital cities like London or Amsterdam.

Now that you're home, how has your program abroad impacted your life?

I'm still living and working in Berlin.

Would you recommend Nomaden Berlin to others? Why?

Yes. I have lived in other European countries but moving to Berlin can be a bit tricky. Without Nomaden Berlin’s assistance, my relocation from the Netherlands would have been more challenging.
