Isi is from Chile. She has lived in South Africa and the United States with her family when she was younger. She studied Business and Administration in Universidad de Los Andes in Santiago and decided to do her last semester abroad in Leipzig, Germany. She lived there for four months and afterward traveled through about 10 countries in Europe for two and a half months. Once she was back in Chile she worked in a couple of startups for about a year and then got a job as an Operational Risk Analyst in a Financial Services Holding. After a year and a half of work, she decided it was time for a change and decided to relocate to Berlin. At the moment, she has been working for a little over a month as a Business Analyst here in Berlin.

What inspired you to go abroad?

I had already lived abroad a couple of times before and really enjoyed living in new places, discovering new cultures and meeting amazing people that quickly became friends. I also wanted to learn a new language and live by myself in a big city in Europe, with possibilities of a lot of travel.

Why did you choose Nomaden Berlin?

I chose Nomaden Berlin because it was exactly what I was looking for. I was looking for help in relocating to Berlin because there is a lot of bureaucratic processes, and not knowing the language well, I did not want to spend so much time figuring stuff out by myself. I also was looking for a program that allowed me to meet other people so I wouldn’t feel so alone and that were in a similar situation as me.

What was your favorite part about Berlin?

Berlin is a city that has never-ending activities and events and has something for everyone. It is super fun and fairly cheap for being a capital in Europe. It is also quite possible to find a job with only English.

What made your experience abroad unique?

The amazing people I met in the program and all the activities we did together.

How did local staff support you throughout your program?

The program supports you through everything in a timely and supportive manner. Whenever I needed help or advice I reached out to Lana and she very quickly answered any question I had. It is very clear that she has a lot of experience with all the topics and problems an expat has to deal with in the first few months. She makes it really easy to have everything in order and helps to solve inconveniences and problems quickly.

What's one thing you wish you would have done differently?

I would have liked to learn more German before I came here, probably to level B2. I would have also liked to save more money to be able to take more language courses, taking advantage of some of the free time I had in the period I was looking for a job.

Describe a typical day in the life of your program.

I would wake up early to go to the German intensive course. Afterward, have lunch with some of the people on the program or at the apartment. In the afternoon, I would generally dedicate a couple of hours to job searching and doing homework from the morning language course and we would generally go out to bars or ice cream shops, or just walk by beautiful neighborhoods and explore the city.

What did you enjoy doing in your free time?

I liked hanging out with some of my friends of the program, exploring the city and going out to eat.

What was your accommodation like? What did you like best about it?

The accommodation was great. It had everything you needed and it was very enjoyable living with the other people from the program, we had a very good living situation. The best part I would say would be the location. The neighborhood was very nice and had a lot of restaurants, bars, and parks nearby.

What is one thing every participant should know before participating in your program?

They should know that Berlin is a great city and that Nomaden Berlin will make the relocation a lot easier, less stressful, and you will have a bunch of people and friends that can support you and help you in the way.

Now that you're home, how has your program abroad impacted your life?

I finished the program about three months ago and at the moment I’m still living in Berlin. Within the first month, I had a part-time job and an apartment. At the moment I have an amazing job related to my career, so I’m very happy. I still meet regularly with friends I made in Nomaden and go to activities of the program.

Would you recommend Nomaden Berlin to others? Why?

Absolutely. It is a wonderful experience because you meet amazing people and get the support you need to make relocating to Berlin as easy as can be.
