<h3>What was your favorite part about your Colombia?</h3>
<p>My favorite part about Colombia, and especially Bucaramanga, was the combination of warmth from the people and the authenticity of everyday life. I really enjoyed how open and welcoming everyone was, which made it easy to feel at home quickly.</p>
<p>In Bucaramanga, I liked that it is not a typical tourist city, so everything felt more real and unfiltered. From the volunteer activities to the Spanish classes and simple moments like walking through the city or sharing time at the hostel, I always felt connected to local life.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The mix of meaningful work, cultural exchange, and the relaxed but vibrant atmosphere made it my favorite part of the whole experience.</p>
<h3>What made your experience abroad extraordinary?</h3>
<p>What made my experience truly extraordinary was the combination of meaningful community work and the depth of personal connection I was able to build in such a short time. It wasn’t just about volunteering in different projects, but about being welcomed into real local environments where I could interact with people in a very genuine way.</p>
<p>Visiting the prison, joining football sessions with the Goles project, and working with the CAPAZ Foundation were especially impactful, because they showed me how much positive change can come from education, sport, and human connection.</p>
<p>At the same time, learning Spanish daily and living in a shared environment with other travelers made the experience feel very immersive and personal. All of this together created moments that were both challenging and incredibly rewarding.</p>
<h3>How did local staff support you throughout your program?</h3>
<p>The local staff supported me in a very consistent and personal way throughout the whole program. From the moment I arrived, I felt welcomed and guided, which made the transition into a new country much easier. They helped with practical things like settling in, explaining the schedule, and making sure I understood each activity before participating.</p>
<p>During the program, they were always available if I had questions or needed help, whether it was about transportation, Spanish classes, or the volunteer projects themselves. What stood out most was that they didn’t just organize things, but were genuinely present and involved in the experience.&nbsp;</p>

<h3>What's one thing you wish you would have done differently during your time abroad?</h3>
<p>One thing I wish I would have done differently is to slow down even more and take more time to reflect in the moment. The experience was quite intense and full of activities, new people, and impressions, so sometimes I focused too much on what was next instead of fully appreciating what was happening right then.</p>
<p>Looking back, I would have tried to document more of the small everyday moments and also spend a bit more individual time with local people outside of the organized activities. I think that would have made the experience even deeper and allowed me to connect even more with the culture and daily life in Colombia.</p>
<h3>Describe what a typical day in your life abroad looked like.</h3>
<p>A typical day in Colombia started quite early and followed a structured but varied routine. In the morning, I usually had Spanish classes, which helped me improve my language skills and also made it easier to connect with locals during the rest of the day.</p>
<p>After lunch, the schedule would change depending on the day. Some afternoons I participated in volunteer activities such as visiting community projects, supporting educational or sports initiatives, or joining local foundations like CAPAZ or football sessions with Goles. Other days were more cultural, including city tours or time to explore Bucaramanga with other volunteers.</p>
<p>In the evenings, I often spent time at the hostel with other travelers, sharing stories, playing games, or just relaxing after a full day. It was a good balance between structured learning, meaningful volunteering, and social time, which made each day feel different but always engaging.</p>

<h3>What did you enjoy doing during your free time abroad?</h3>
<p>In my free time abroad, I enjoyed a mix of simple social moments and exploring the local environment. A lot of the time I would spend time with other volunteers at the hostel, sharing meals, talking about our experiences, or just relaxing after a busy day.</p>
<p>I also really enjoyed going out in Bucaramanga, whether it was grabbing food locally, walking around the city, or joining small spontaneous activities with others. Those unplanned moments often turned out to be the most memorable, because they felt very authentic and gave me a chance to experience the city beyond the structured program.</p>
<h3>What type of accommodation did you have? What did you like best about it?</h3>
<p>I stayed at Zamia Hostel in Bucaramanga, which was a shared accommodation for volunteers and travelers. It was simple, comfortable, and had everything I needed for a longer stay, but what I appreciated most was the atmosphere.</p>
<p>The best part was definitely the social environment. It was very easy to meet other volunteers and travelers, which created a strong sense of community from the beginning. After a full day of activities, it felt great to come back to a place where you could share experiences, cook together, or just relax and talk.&nbsp;</p>
<p>At the same time, it still offered enough space for rest and privacy when needed, which made it a really good balance overall.</p>
<h3>What is one thing every future participant should know about your program before their program begins?</h3>
<p>One thing every future participant should know is that the experience is much more immersive and personal than a typical “structured volunteer program.” You are not just observing or doing isolated tasks—you are actively engaging with local people, communities, and daily life from the very beginning.</p>
<p>That means it helps a lot to arrive with an open mind, flexibility, and a willingness to adapt to a different pace and culture. Spanish will also make a big difference in how deeply you can connect, so even a basic effort to learn the language beforehand or during the program really enhances the experience.&nbsp;</p>
<p>If you come with the right mindset, the program becomes not just volunteering, but a very meaningful cultural exchange.</p>

<p>Yes, I would definitely recommend Voluntours Colombia to others. What makes it special is that it goes beyond a typical volunteer placement and creates a real cultural exchange experience. <p>The biggest benefit of traveling abroad, in my experience, is the shift in perspective it creates. When you step into a completely different cultural and social environment, you start to question your own assumptions and see the world in a broader, more open way.</p>
<p>It also forces you to grow personally. You become more adaptable, independent, and confident because you constantly face new situations, languages, and ways of doing things. On top of that, the human connections you build abroad are incredibly valuable—you meet people you would never encounter in your everyday life, and those interactions often stay with you long after the trip ends.</p>

<h3>Now that you're home, how has your time abroad impacted your life?</h3>
<p>Now that I’m back home, my time abroad has had a lasting impact on how I see everyday life and my priorities. The experience helped me become more independent, adaptable, and open-minded, especially when dealing with unfamiliar situations or environments.<br><br>It also changed the way I relate to other cultures and people. I now feel much more aware of how different realities can be, and I value human connection and cultural exchange much more than before.&nbsp;</p>
<p>On a personal level, I also gained confidence, especially in communicating in Spanish and in stepping outside of my comfort zone. Overall, it feels like the experience didn’t just end when I came home—it still shapes how I think and how I approach new challenges.</p>
<h3>What does meaningful travel mean to you?</h3>
<p>Meaningful travel, to me, is when a trip goes beyond sightseeing and comfort and becomes a real exchange between people, cultures, and perspectives. It’s not just about visiting a new place, but about taking part in daily life, understanding local realities, and contributing in a small but genuine way.</p>
<p>For me, it means being present, open, and willing to step outside of your own patterns—whether that’s through volunteering, learning the language, or simply listening and connecting with people you meet along the way.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As a Colombian, I've always believed that my country has so much more to offer than many people expect. I wanted to help visitors experience the real Colombia—not just its beautiful landscapes, but also its people, culture, and communities.</p>
<p>Working at Voluntours Colombia allows me to combine my passion for helping others with my love for meeting people from around the world. Every week, I see volunteers build meaningful relationships with our partner foundations, local children, and community members. <h3>What advice would you tell your pre-travel self?</h3>
<p>Keep an open mind and don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. The most meaningful experiences often happen when things don't go exactly as planned.</p>
<p>I'd also remind myself that travel isn't just about visiting new places—it's about connecting with people and learning from different cultures. Take the time to listen, ask questions, and embrace local traditions. Those moments will stay with you far longer than any photo.</p>
<p>Finally, I'd say: learn a few words of the local language before you arrive. Even a simple "hello" or "thank you" can open doors, create genuine connections, and show respect for the community you're visiting. Language learning has been one of the greatest things I changed in my life recently.</p>
<h3>Describe a typical day at work.</h3>
<p>No two days are exactly the same, and that's one of the things I love most about my job. My day usually starts by checking in with our volunteers and making sure everyone is ready for the day's activities.</p>
<p>In the afternoons, I accompany our volunteers to one of our partner foundations, where we support local children through sports, education, or community activities. I coordinate with the foundation staff, help volunteers feel comfortable, and make sure everything runs smoothly. It's incredibly rewarding to see friendships develop despite language and cultural differences.</p>
<p>Some days, I also lead cultural activities, city tours, or excursions, giving our participants the chance to experience Colombia beyond the typical tourist attractions. Every day is different, but my goal is always the same: to create meaningful experiences for both our volunteers and the local communities we work with.</p>
<h3>What challenges do you often face and how do you overcome them?</h3>

<p>One of the biggest challenges is making sure that every volunteer feels comfortable and confident, especially during their first few days in a new country. Many arrive not knowing anyone, speaking little or no Spanish, or feeling unsure about what to expect.</p>
<p>I overcome this by creating a welcoming environment from day one. I take the time to get to know each volunteer personally, answer their questions, and encourage them to connect with the local community and with each other. Seeing them become more confident and independent over the course of their stay is one of the most rewarding parts of my job.</p>
<p>Another challenge is coordinating activities with different partner foundations, each with their own schedules and needs. Good communication, flexibility, and close relationships with our local partners help us adapt and ensure that every activity benefits both the volunteers and the communities we support.</p>

<p>We're very excited about how Voluntours Colombia is growing. What started with community projects in Bucaramanga has expanded into a nationwide network of meaningful volunteer and cultural experiences across Colombia.</p>
<p>While we continue to strengthen our long-term partnerships with local foundations in Bucaramanga, we're also developing new programs in destinations such as Cartagena, the Amazon, Nuquí, Los Llanos, and El Cocuy. Our goal is to give travelers the opportunity to experience the incredible diversity of Colombia while supporting local communities in a responsible and sustainable way.</p>
<p>At the same time, we're continuously improving the volunteer experience by introducing new cultural activities, adventure tours, and Spanish immersion options. As we grow, one thing remains unchanged: our commitment to offering authentic, locally led experiences that create a positive impact for both our participants and our partner communities.</p>
<h3>What do you hope participants take away from your programs?</h3>
<p>I hope every participant leaves with much more than great photos and unforgettable memories. I want them to leave with meaningful friendships, a deeper understanding of Colombian culture, and the feeling that they truly made a positive impact in the communities they visited.</p>
<p>Many volunteers arrive expecting to give something, but they often tell us they received even more in return. They gain new perspectives, become more confident, improve their Spanish, and discover a side of Colombia that most tourists never experience.</p>
<p>Above all, I hope they leave feeling inspired—to continue exploring the world with an open mind, to appreciate different cultures, and to remember that even small acts of kindness can make a lasting difference.</p>
<h3>Why is it important for people to travel abroad and experience new cultures?</h3>
<p>Traveling abroad helps us see the world from a different perspective. When we experience another culture firsthand, we realize that people may live differently, but we often share the same values, dreams, and kindness. It breaks down stereotypes and helps us become more open-minded and empathetic.</p>
<p>I think it's especially important to travel with curiosity rather than expectations. By spending time with local communities, trying new foods, learning a different language, and stepping outside our comfort zone, we grow in ways that aren't possible from home.</p>
<p>For me, the greatest value of travel is the human connection. The friendships, conversations, and shared experiences with people from different backgrounds often become the most meaningful memories—and they remind us that, despite our differences, we have far more in common than we think.</p>
<h3>What questions do participants often ask you, and how do you typically respond?</h3>
<p>Before arriving, participants often ask if it's safe to travel to Colombia, whether they need to speak Spanish, and what they can expect from the volunteer projects. I always tell them that Colombia has changed tremendously over the years, and that with the right local guidance, it's an incredibly welcoming and rewarding destination. I also reassure them that speaking Spanish isn't a requirement—we're here to support them, and many volunteers see it as a great opportunity to learn.</p>
<p>Once they're here, the questions become much more practical: where to find the best local food, what to do on weekends, or how to connect with local people. I love sharing my favorite places and helping participants discover the authentic side of Colombia beyond the typical tourist attractions.</p>
<p>My goal is always to make our volunteers feel informed, confident, and at home. I want them to know that no question is too small and that our team is here to support them throughout their entire journey.</p>

<h3>What inspired you to go abroad?</h3>
<p>I've always had a strong desire to explore the world, experience different cultures, and connect with people from all walks of life. After going through a difficult period in my life, I decided it was time to stop waiting and finally take the leap.</p>
<p>What began as a solo trip turned into an incredible 10-month journey across Asia and Europe. Along the way, I visited 13 countries, stepped far outside my comfort zone and had experiences that completely changed my perspective on life.&nbsp;</p>
<p>One of the highlights was <a href=https://www.goabroad.com/providers/cambodia-volunteer-foundation/programs/volunteer-opportunity-in-cambodia-200340 rel="" target="_self" class="link">volunteering in Cambodia</a>, where I had the opportunity to give back, learn from the local community, and create meaningful connections.</p>
<p>For me, going abroad was never just about traveling. It was about growth, new perspectives, and discovering who I am when everything familiar is left behind.</p>
<h3>Why did you choose <a href=https://www.goabroad.com/providers/cambodia-volunteer-foundation rel="" target="_self" class="link">Cambodia Volunteer Foundation</a>?</h3>
<p>When I was traveling through Thailand, I realized that something was missing. Thailand is an amazing country, and I met wonderful people there, but deep down I felt lonely and somehow not fully connected to my journey. I was constantly moving from one place to another, taking in incredible experiences, yet I felt like I wasn't giving anything back.</p>
<p>Cambodia was my next destination, and at first I mainly knew it for Angkor Wat. While researching what else the country had to offer, I came across Cambodia Volunteer Foundation. The organization's mission immediately caught my attention because it offered the opportunity to connect with local people, contribute to the community, and experience Cambodia beyond the typical tourist attractions.</p>
<p>At the same time, I was nervous about applying. English is not my first language, and being hard of hearing sometimes makes communication more challenging. However, I decided not to let those fears hold me back.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Looking back, choosing Cambodia Volunteer Foundation was one of the best decisions of my entire journey. It gave me a sense of purpose, meaningful connections, and memories that will stay with me long after my travels.</p>

<h3>What was your favorite part about Cambodia?</h3>
<p>Definitely the people. Cambodia is a beautiful country, but it was the people who made my experience truly special.</p>
<p>What I love about Cambodians is that they are not always the loudest or most expressive people when you first meet them. The real beauty reveals itself when you take the time to get to know them. The longer I stayed, the more I appreciated their kindness, humility, generosity, and sense of community.</p>
<p>Cambodia is a country that has been through a lot, and when you begin to understand even a small part of its history, you gain a whole new level of respect for the people. Despite the challenges their country has faced, they continue to move forward with remarkable strength, optimism, and warmth. There is something incredibly inspiring about that.</p>
<p>My time in Cambodia taught me to slow down, look beyond first impressions, and approach people with more empathy and curiosity. Some of the most meaningful connections I made during my travels happened there, and those memories will stay with me forever.</p>

<p>What made my experience abroad extraordinary was that it completely changed the way I travel. Before coming to Cambodia, I had spent months backpacking across Asia, moving from one destination to the next. I saw incredible places, but I often felt like I was just passing through.</p>
<p>Volunteering changed that. For the first time, I felt connected to a place in a much deeper way. I wasn't only exploring Cambodia. I was becoming part of a community, building friendships, sharing experiences, and learning from the people around me.</p>
<p>What made it even more special was that I almost didn't apply. As someone who is hard of hearing, I was worried about my English and whether I would fit in. Looking back, I'm so glad I didn't let those doubts stop me.</p>
<p>The most memorable moments weren't the big highlights. They were the small everyday moments: laughing with students, having conversations with local people, sharing meals, and feeling like I truly belonged somewhere. That's what made this experience so special and unforgettable.</p>

<h3>How did local staff support you throughout your program?</h3>
<p>I felt supported from day one. When I arrived at the airport, Raksmey was already waiting for me with a welcome letter and the biggest smile. After months of solo travel, that simple gesture meant a lot and instantly made me feel welcome.</p>
<p>From the airport, we headed straight to the volunteer house, where a warm meal was waiting for us. It was also the first time I met the other volunteers. We were a group of six people from different backgrounds and countries, which created a really nice atmosphere from the start. Depending on the program, some volunteers continued to Phnom Penh, some stayed in Siem Reap, and I later moved to Battambang.</p>
<p>Before starting our placements, we had an orientation day where we learned about Cambodian culture, local customs, a few Khmer words, and useful tips for daily life. It was a great introduction and helped us settle in quickly.</p>
<p>What I appreciated most was that the support didn't stop after the introduction. Throughout my stay, the team regularly checked in with me, asked how things were going, and made sure I felt comfortable. In Battambang, I was warmly welcomed by everyone and quickly felt less like a visitor and more like part of the community.</p>
<h3>What's one thing you wish you would have done differently during your time abroad?</h3>
<p>Honestly, I wish I had trusted myself more from the beginning.</p>
<p>As someone who is hard of hearing and not a native English speaker, I sometimes worried about whether I would fit in or communicate well enough. Looking back, those fears were unnecessary. The people I met were incredibly welcoming, patient, and supportive.</p>
<p>If I could go back, I would spend less time overthinking and more time fully embracing every opportunity from day one. Some of my best memories came from moments that initially felt uncomfortable or uncertain.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Those experiences taught me that growth usually happens just outside of your comfort zone.</p>
<h3>Describe what a typical day in your life abroad looked like.</h3>
<p>A typical day started early, with classes beginning around 7:00 AM. In the mornings, I mostly taught younger children and preschool students. One thing I really appreciated was that I was never left on my own. A local teacher was always there to support me, answer questions, and help manage the classroom.</p>
<p>The school was an NGO-supported school, and many of the students attended regular public school as well. They came here before or after their regular classes to improve their English and gain additional learning opportunities. For some students, it was also a safe place to spend time while their parents were working. It was inspiring to see how motivated they were to learn.</p>
<p>Classes usually finished around noon, followed by a long lunch break. I would grab some food, explore Battambang, spend time with the local teachers, or prepare lessons for the afternoon.</p>
<p>From around 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM, I taught older students. The energy in these classes was different, and I really enjoyed the conversations, questions, and interactions. Lesson planning was also part of the experience, but honestly, it never felt like work. Seeing students grow in confidence and improve their English was incredibly rewarding.</p>
<h3>What did you enjoy doing during your free time abroad?</h3>

<p>During my free time, I loved exploring Battambang and experiencing everyday life in Cambodia. I would often walk or cycle around the city, visit local cafés, explore markets, and discover small places that weren't listed in any travel guide.</p>
<p>One of my favorite things was simply spending time with local people. Whether it was sharing a meal, having a conversation after class, or watching the sunset together, those moments often became the highlights of my day.&nbsp;</p>
<p>I also enjoyed visiting temples, trying Cambodian food, and learning more about the country's culture and history. Because I stayed for a while, I wasn't constantly rushing to the next attraction. Instead, I had the chance to slow down, build routines, and appreciate the small everyday moments that make a place feel like home.</p>
<p>Looking back, it was this balance between exploring, connecting with people, and enjoying daily life that made my free time so memorable.</p>
<h3>What type of accommodation did you have? What did you like best about it?</h3>
<p>I stayed in a small guesthouse run by a local family. It used to operate as a hotel with a few guest rooms, but today it mainly welcomes volunteers. From the moment I arrived, the family made me feel at home. They were incredibly kind, welcoming, and always happy to help.</p>
<p>What I liked most was the warm and personal atmosphere. The family also ran a restaurant where I had my daily meals, which quickly became part of my routine. It was a great place to connect with other volunteers and experience local food and hospitality.</p>
<p>The rooms were clean, comfortable, and, most importantly, had air conditioning, which, trust me, is a real luxury in Cambodia's heat! I was also lucky enough to have access to a gym on the property, which I could use for free during my stay.</p>
<p>Overall, it felt much less like accommodation and much more like a home away from home.</p>
<h3>What is one thing every future participant should know about your program before their program begins?</h3>
<p>One thing every future participant should know is that you don't need to have perfect English or teaching experience to make a difference. What matters most is showing up with an open mind, a positive attitude, and a willingness to connect with people.</p>
<p>I'd also recommend staying as long as possible. The longer you stay, the more you settle into daily life, build genuine relationships, and become part of the community. Some of the best moments happen long after the initial excitement wears off.</p>
<p>Don't overthink it too much and embrace the experience, be flexible, and say yes to new opportunities. Cambodia has a way of surprising you when you least expect it.</p>
<h3>Would you recommend Cambodia Volunteer Foundation to others? Why?</h3>
<p>Definitely. I would recommend Cambodia Volunteer Foundation to anyone looking for a meaningful volunteer experience.</p>
<p>From day one, I felt welcomed, supported, and part of a community. The team was always approachable, communication was easy, and everything was well organized.</p>
<p>What I liked most was how authentic the experience felt. It wasn't just about volunteering, it was about connecting with local people, experiencing Cambodian culture, and growing as a person along the way.</p>
<h3>What do you feel the biggest benefit of traveling abroad is?</h3>
<p>The biggest benefit of traveling abroad is perspective.</p>
<p>When you leave your familiar environment, you start seeing the world and yourself in a different way. You meet people with completely different backgrounds, lifestyles, and beliefs, and you realize how much there is to learn from one another.</p>
<p>For me, traveling abroad has made me more open-minded, adaptable, and grateful. It has taught me that despite our differences, people everywhere share many of the same hopes, dreams, and challenges.</p>
<p>Travel doesn't just show you new places. It changes the way you look at life.</p>
<h3>Now that you're home, how has your time abroad impacted your life?</h3>

<p>My time abroad reminded me of what really matters.</p>
<p>Before I left, I was focused on plans, goals, and figuring out what was next. But after months of traveling, volunteering, and meeting people from all walks of life, I realized that most of us are searching for the same things: connection, purpose, belonging, and happiness.</p>
<p>One of the biggest lessons I learned is that, no matter where we come from, we're all human. We may speak different languages, grow up in different cultures, and live completely different lives, but at the end of the day, we're all navigating challenges, doubts, hopes, and dreams in our own way. That realization made me more empathetic and helped me approach people with more understanding and less judgment.</p>
<p>I came home with a different perspective on life. Less focused on achievements and more focused on relationships, experiences, and being present. It sounds simple, but it's a lesson that has stayed with me ever since.</p>
<h3>What does meaningful travel mean to you?</h3>
<p>To me, meaningful travel is about much more than visiting new places or checking destinations off a list. It's about connecting with people, understanding different cultures, and being open to experiences that challenge the way you see the world.</p>
<p>The most meaningful moments of my journey didn't happen at famous landmarks. They happened while sharing meals with strangers, listening to people's stories, spending time with local communities, and building friendships along the way. Those experiences gave me new perspectives and taught me lessons that no guidebook ever could.</p>
<p>But meaningful travel is not only about discovering the world around you. It's also about discovering yourself. Sometimes that means letting go—of assumptions, expectations, and even the image you have of who you are. The farther I traveled, the more I realized that growth often begins when you stop trying to become someone and start allowing yourself to simply be.</p>
<p>One lesson stood out above all others: no matter where we come from, we're all human. We all want to be seen, understood, loved, and accepted. We all carry our own struggles, hopes, and dreams. Travel helped me recognize those shared experiences and reminded me that there is often far more that unites us than divides us.</p>
<p>For me, that's what transformed my journey from simply seeing the world into truly understanding it and, in many ways, understanding myself as well.</p>
