Program Overview

This amazing program offers a wonderful experience to volunteers with medical training and experience. They provide much-needed skills and knowledge in Kenya's severely under-resourced and underfunded medical system, making healthcare more accessible to underprivileged people. The placement is at a busy hospital with numerous departments, including casualty, maternity, pediatrics, and surgery. While privately owned, it only charges Kenyan people a small fee. Its staff attends to patients from around Nairobi and farther areas, keeping them extremely busy. Volunteers provide much-needed assistance in all areas, including translations. Participants must be ready to think outside the box as the hospital has limited resources and equipment – i.e., listening to a baby’s heartbeat is done manually since they don't have a sonogram. Medically trained volunteers provide vital services to the local people and help upskill staff, thus, they are greatly appreciated by the hospital and communities they serve.

Perfect blend

I feel like I got the perfect blend of insight on everyday life and tourism. I loved Kenya. It was very peaceful and the people were very friendly and hospitable. I loved working at the Wema Hospital. Dr. George and the nurses were very nice and I got a lot of hands on experience. TIPS: My housing ran out of water while I was there. It would be helpful to make sure you have enough clothes for the whole time, because you might not be able to wash them.

Response from provider

Hi Dana,
Volunteering certainly puts you behind the scenes in a way that being a tourist can never match. It's fantastic to hear about our volunteers embracing the opportunity to be involved with families and communities and getting the very most of their placements - whilst providing much needed hands-on support in return.
Many thanks for sharing your insight and tips to help future volunteers.
The Team @ Love Volunteers.
