Academic Culture
Classrooms are specially designed for language teaching, providing a structure for a communicative methodology that allows small groups to work well together. CIEE language classes are small, with no more than 12 students per class. The size of the content classes varies, but there are never more than 15 students. All classes meet Monday through Friday.
Costa Brava and French Catalonia
This overnight field trip gives students the opportunity to explore the Costa Brava and the south of France. The Costa Brava is the 100-mile stretch of Catalunya's rugged, beautiful coastline in northeast Spain. For centuries, it has attracted adventurous travelers and inspired great artists such as Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dali. The Costa Brava, often translated "wild coast," boasts some of the most dramatic scenery in the Mediterranean, including rocky gorges, unspoiled nooks, and amazing golden beaches. The Costa Brava extends to the French border, where students witness how France and Spain have developed separate, but overlapping cultural histories.
This spectacular landscape provides the backdrop for students to gain a wealth of information about Spanish history and art. Students are acquainted with both as they visit archaeological sites, Romanesque churches and monasteries, impressive monuments and museums, and take part in age-old celebrations and local fiestas that contribute to the region's unique character. Outings in breathtaking national parks, as well as strolls through medieval towns and fishing villages, offer exhilarating glimpses into this fascinating corner of Spain and southern France. At the same time, visits to significant sites in the life and work of Dali enhance students' appreciation of this extraordinary artist.
