4.4 (5)VerifiedSince 2006

Engineering internships are some of the most competitive and prestigious placements VACorps offers, and for good reason, you'll be working directly alongside established South African engineers at some of Africa's leading engineering firms, in a country where the economy is growing fast enough to create genuine, ongoing demand for engineering talent. Because these placements are serious professional environments, candidates are expected to bring either a strong theoretical foundation in engineering or prior hands-on project experience. Our most rewarding placements tend to be in the sustainability sector, but we've successfully placed interns across a wide range of specializations, robotics, sustainable engineering (wind and solar), environmental, biological, electrical, civil, mechatronic, and even landscape design and architecture. VACorps works with you directly to land a placement that actually matches your specific interests and career direction, not just a generic engineering internship. The result: real international experience, a serious professional network, and firsthand exposure to how engineering firms operate in one of Africa's fastest-developing economies.

From Istanbul to Cape Town for the internship adventure of a lifetime

Cape Town was always one of my dream places to be in and also had many qualified places in my department to get experience from. Whenever I run into VAC program by the internet site I saw that this is great opportunity and I wanted to try my chance. After I got my acceptation, VAC team was very helpful throughout the process. They explained the process very well and were by my side every step of the way. I loved everything about Cape Town but if I be specific about it I loved the culture, people, food, nature and city activities. Every moment was full of unforgettable memories. I learned a lot of things about myself during my internship and living in Cape Town own my own. I see I can achieve actually a lot more than I expected. I can handle with everything that I run into. Cape Town made me know about myself more and make me grown in every ways. My version before coming to Cape Town and after leaving is so different in a so many good ways and previous version of myself would be so proud for the things that last version of me did. Cape Town gave me peaceful and sincere life. Every people I run into add something to my life. I did a lot of activities that I was proud of myself doing it after as hikings, bungee jumping, surfing etc. I will miss everything about Cape Town it felt like home thanks to VAC team and my friends. But specifically I will miss watching sunset and chat with friends during this mesmerizing views. I stayed for 3 months and I would say 3 months was okay but 4 months would be better and I came on March it was so beautiful. I catch the end of the summer and until june it got a little chill but still we did almost all the outdoor activities that we can do. VAC Staff and weekly activities were amazing I had a lot of fun with them and with the activities and that was the thing I look forward to during week. VAC team were always by my side and never let me feel alone and help to me with everything. I loved the acitivities and cultural nights too because it made us meet with other people and become sincere and also I learned a lot about culture, food, history etc. It was unique and unforgettable experience for me. I suggest to everyone. It will be one of the best time of your life.

Not Just Theory Anymore

I chose Cape Town because it offers a unique mix of innovation, nature, and cultural diversity, making it an inspiring place to gain international work experience. I decided to pursue an internship to build practical skills and better understand what kind of work I enjoy in a professional setting. What stood out most was the opportunity to work on meaningful projects while being surrounded by such an incredible city. During my internship with an engineering-focused organization, I gained insight into how complex technical projects come together in practice. I learned how different areas, such as software, electronics, and mechanical systems, work together within a single project. I enjoyed contributing to smaller technical tasks, asking questions, and learning directly from experienced engineers about testing, troubleshooting, and improving systems. This experience helped me understand how ideas develop into real-world applications and strengthened my interest in working in a hands-on engineering environment. Living in Cape Town was equally rewarding. The combination of mountains, ocean, and city life is hard to beat, and I will especially miss the outdoor lifestyle and the friendly people. The VACorps team was incredibly supportive, and the weekly activities were a great way to meet others and explore the city. Overall, the program was well organized and created a strong sense of community, making the experience both enjoyable and meaningful.

I had an incredible time in Cape Town and felt that I was able to visit and explore everything I otherwise wouldn't have experienced. My internship gave me an incredible experience and gave me a great direction for a career path. I wanted to learn more about engineering in a professional setting and I felt like I was able to achieve that experience. I also have a lot of content to add to my CV that will help me start a career path in this sector.

Between the ocean and the mountain you can never go wrong

When I first began the search for an internship last fall, I never dreamed that I would spend three months in Cape Town. By the Lord's providence, this was the only internship that ended up front and center, and I realized that spending the summer abroad may be a very real possibility. There really is no place like Cape Town. Naturally, Cape Town is the most beautiful place I have been in - between the mountains and ocean you can never go wrong. My internship was with a surfboard startup company in Muizenberg. I am studying mechanical engineering but am extremely interested in small business, so this internship was a perfect combination of the two. I also got the opportunity to surf quite a bit while I was here - something I had never had the opportunity to do before either. I enjoyed the full Cape Town experience - from hiking Table Mountain to surfing in the Indian Ocean to Culture Series and the vast number of Friday Activities that allowed me so many new and exciting opportunities. I am so grateful for the people of VACorps - without the program establishing a group of interns here to befriend and live 3 months with, I would not have made it in Cape Town. The program advisors care so much and have become some of my dearest friends and people I have learned so much from. I could write forever about my Cape Town experience, but there are not enough words to express the lessons I learned the memories I will take with me when I leave. I would not trade any of them for the world.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which engineering fields can I specialize in?

Options include sustainable (solar and wind) engineering, electrical, mechatronic, environmental, civil, robotics and aeronautical, landscape design and architecture, and biotech engineering.

Do I need prior engineering experience to apply?

Yes, candidates are expected to have either a strong theoretical understanding of engineering or prior experience working on engineering projects, since these placements are genuinely competitive and professional.

Will I get to work on real projects, or mostly observe?

You'll work alongside professional engineers on active projects, giving you genuine hands-on exposure rather than a passive shadowing experience.

Can this internship benefit communities too?

Yes, several placements involve applying your engineering skills toward projects that directly benefit underprivileged communities, particularly within civil and sustainable engineering tracks.

Why choose this over domestic internships?

It shows you can operate cross-culturally with real engineers on active projects in a fast-developing economy, international, hands-on experience that's harder to come by and clearly differentiates you in a competitive field.

I was looking to gain experience internationally to compliment my domestic internship experiences. While interning in Canada, I recognized that many of the projects I worked on had significant international influences. From this, I believe that solving problems with an international perspective will be a critical skill to develop through my career.
