A rewarding program
July 09, 2019by: Thomas Williamson - United StatesProgram: UNO-Japan: Study at Doshisha UniversityI've had an interest in Japan and its media for a while but never truly considered going there. When I heard of the program and the time was right, I took the dive. Visiting Kyoto was unlike anything that I'd experience at that point. The architecture, the hospitality, the food, all of it was so new to me that it was exciting just to exist in the city. With such a rich history all around, each field trip across the Kansai area was enticing and intriguing. The classes brought a captivating new perspective on culture and life with each lesson. You don't need to speak Japanese to participate in the program; signs have an English accompaniment and the locals are willing to accommodate respectful foreigners. The program is truly remarkable and rewarding. If you have even the slightest interest in the program, do your best to participate. It's an experience you won't regret.
Changed my life
March 29, 2019by: Hannah Juliff - United StatesProgram: UNO-Ireland: Writing Workshops & Creative Arts in CorkI participated in the UNO Writing Abroad program in the summer of 2015. I loved every moment of my experience. I was challenged academically, culturally immersed, and felt like it was a fantastic introduction to life outside of the United States. We had really fun excursions planned throughout the program. The other participants were supportive, friendly, inspiring, and up for anything. Cork residents were friendly, interested in us, and welcoming. We spent many nights exploring Cork, singing karaoke, eating fish & chips, and even going to concerts. It was one of the best decisions made in my life. I believe that my experience studying abroad set me on my life's trajectory. I now work in international education and travel for fun whenever I can! I learned so much about myself, my national identity, traveling, and how big the world is.
Writing in Ireland
March 26, 2019by: Christy L - United StatesProgram: UNO-Ireland: Writing Workshops & Creative Arts in CorkI went on this program in 2015 and it did not disappoint. I researched several summer study abroad programs and selected the Cork, Ireland program as it had the most course offerings that were applicable to my majors-- English and Film & Theatre. A month was the perfect amount of time in Ireland. By the end of the trip I not only felt familiar with Cork itself but I was able to create bonds with my classmates that I may have not formed in a shorter time frame. As an older, nontraditional student, I appreciated the diversity in the student's age ranges and, in general, this program attracts more mature students, regardless of age. Academically, I felt like I was getting the same quality education as if I was studying during a regular-length semester. I also appreciated the mix of free time and scheduled activities. There was plenty of time to socialize as well as experience the city on my own or with friends. I highly recommend this program to anyone, especially students that are looking for an intimate writing workshop experience. I gained so much from writing in a different country surrounded by writers from different schools. That, to me, was invaluable.
