Discover what it’s like to live on island time. Spend your summer snorkeling and diving in the crystal clear waters of South Caicos, studying rays, turtles, brilliantly colored fish, and other marine life—face to face. This fundamentals course focuses on environmental issues and policies affecting marine ecosystems and communities. You’ll study these issues within the context of South Caicos while building the skills needed to conduct marine research. SFS students live and study at the Center for Marine Resource Studies. The Center is a small converted hotel overlooking the crystalline waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Program Highlights
Swim, dive, or snorkel nearly every day – learn species identification and population assessment techniques while visiting coral reefs, sea grass beds, mangrove nurseries, and small uninhabited cays.
Discuss the ecological impacts of marine protected areas (MPAs) and participate in an assessment survey of the queen conch, an important economic and cultural resource.
Lay underwater transects to assess the health of the island’s coral reefs, which are among the largest in the world and are home to diverse marine species including the valuable queen conch.
Learn core skills including coral health assessment, marine species identification, underwater transects and quadrats, natural resource valuation, research design, and data collection.
Get the chance to be a certified diver with PADI SCUBA certifications available on this program.
