SIS Intercultural Study Abroad is a small, independent, and locally run study abroad organization based in Siena, Italy. Founded in 2004, SIS has over 20 years of experience designing immersive academic programs for students who want to engage deeply with local cultures, languages, and communities—beyond the limits of a traditional study abroad “bubble.”
SIS offers semester, summer, winter term, and Maymester programs in Siena (Italy), Brussels (Belgium), and Yaoundé (Cameroon). All programs are built around a full-immersion educational model that combines intensive language study, academic coursework, service learning, and guided intercultural reflection. With SIS, students don’t just study abroad—they live abroad.
Full immersion at SIS is a gradual and supported process. Rather than expecting students to immediately adapt on their own, SIS emphasizes continuous interaction with local communities through host family housing, community-based service learning, and structured reflection courses. This approach helps students develop language proficiency, cultural awareness, and confidence while building meaningful relationships in their host country.
Through flexible program structures, independent operations, and ongoing collaborations with universities worldwide, SIS provides academically rigorous and personally transformative study abroad experiences that foster lifelong intercultural competence.
