Gap Year/Sabbatical Sailing

by: Sail Racing Academy

Sail Racing Academy offers tailor-made gap year programs that cater to all interests. From one month to one year and from cruising to racing in the UK, the Mediterranean, or the Caribbean, we have it all. Our experienced skippers are happy to work alongside you to help you gain experience and qualifications. We aim to find the perfect balance between practical hands-on experience, theory, and fun. You will be an active part of our team. During regattas, when not sailing, there is always a fully packed schedule of social events. This is a great time to have fun, as well as get to know other sailors and develop your network. Between regattas, there is always plenty to do with maintenance, repairs, and cleaning. It’s a good time to learn about the mechanics of sailing. Plus, get to see and enjoy the beauty of each location where the yacht anchors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there an age or fitness required?

We are a very friendly and inclusive organisation, we often have guests from 18 up to their mid-70s and from every corner of the globe. If you have any physical limitations, please let us know in advance so we can make any adjustments that would allow you to better enjoy your experience.

Do I need prior experience?

Generally speaking, a basic level of skill will be necessary from a safety point of view. This level will differ depending on which events you are thinking of joining us for. Feel free to get in touch for a quick chat to discuss your level of experience and see what may be the best fit for you. We’re more than happy to work with people to get them to where they want to be.

Who else will be onboard?

There will be a professional skipper and up to 11 others on board, depending on the boat. The variety of experience will range from competent crew through to those who are experienced skippers in their own right, and everything in between. We are very proud to often have some of the most diverse crews assembled in terms of Age, Gender, Nationality, and many other characteristics.

Who else will I share a cabin with?

When possible, we try to arrange cabins based on gender and comfort. If a sailing trip is longer than 24 hours and involves overnight sailing, we do like to spread everyone out so there are different genders on different watches, but our skippers will always have a conversation with you regarding your comfort level. If you have booked with a friend and prefer to share a cabin, we can accommodate this. Hot bunking may be necessary.

Are there any extra costs?

We do not include flights, transfers, clearance into countries, or any meals eaten off the boat (usually 1 per day whilst training). We strongly recommend travel insurance specifically for this type of activity. Wet weather gear is not provided, but there are multiple options at different cost points that we are happy to advise on.
