Who is eligible to apply for this psychology and mental health placement?
The placement is open to student interns who are in at least their second year of a nursing, psychology, counselling, social work, or related degree program. Professional volunteers must have a minimum of six months of work experience in a related field. All applicants must be at least 18 years old.
What are the program fees for this placement?
There is a $150 registration fee and a $50 per week Tanzania medical practice fee. The fees include accommodation, placement preparation, facilitation and coordination, airport pick-up and drop-off, and supervision by a qualified lead.
How long can I volunteer, and when can I start?
The placement runs from a minimum of 2 weeks up to 12 months. There is no fixed start date — you can begin at any time during the year.
What will I actually do during the placement?
You will observe and assist with psychotherapy sessions, psychosocial assessments, crisis interventions, and methadone/addiction recovery clinic activities. You'll also participate in community psychoeducation workshops, contribute to stigma-reduction campaigns, and prepare a reflective journal and analytical report. All supervised interaction with patients is subject to clinical oversight.
Can this placement count toward university credit or my professional portfolio?
Yes. The documented experience and reflective report produced during the placement are suitable for university credit applications, CPD portfolios, or postgraduate applications, though participants should confirm credit recognition directly with their home institution.
