Join Medi Trip's obstetrics and gynecology volunteer placement in Arusha, Tanzania, and make a direct impact on one of the country's most critical public health challenges. Tanzania faces alarmingly high maternal and neonatal mortality rates, and skilled medical volunteers are urgently needed to support overstretched healthcare teams. This program is founded and led by a qualified medical professional, ensuring placements are clinically appropriate, carefully vetted, and matched to each volunteer's area of expertise.
This opportunity is open to doctors, midwives, nurses, and students at third-year degree level or above, as well as post-graduate healthcare professionals with relevant experience. Volunteers work alongside obstetric and gynecology surgeons and labor and delivery staff, assisting with both normal and complex births and OBGYN care. The flexible structure allows participants to start at any time of year and stay from two weeks up to twelve months.
Volunteers are housed in a shared volunteer home just 15 minutes from central Arusha, with breakfast and weekday dinners provided, Wi-Fi, hot showers, 24-hour security, and daily coordinator support.

Who is eligible to apply for the OBGYN volunteer placement in Tanzania?
The placement is open to doctors, midwives, nurses, and students who are at minimum in their third year of a Medicine, Nursing, Midwifery, or related healthcare degree. Post-graduate students and qualified professionals with at least 12 months of relevant work experience are also welcome.
When can I start the program and how long can I stay?
There is no specific start date — you can begin at any time during the year. Placements range from a minimum of 2 weeks up to a maximum of 12 months.
What accommodation is provided during the placement?
Volunteers stay in a shared volunteer house in a quiet neighbourhood approximately 15 minutes from central Arusha. The house includes comfortable bedding, Wi-Fi, hot showers, 24-hour gated security, and housekeeping. Breakfast and dinner (Monday to Friday) are provided. A cook is also available to do laundry for a small fee.
What fees are involved in participating in this program?
There is a $150 registration fee to book your placement. Additionally, a hospital participation fee of $25–$50 per week is payable to the host hospital (as required by Tanzania's Ministry of Health). A visa fee for voluntary work assignment is also required — please contact Medi Trip for details.
Is it safe to volunteer alone in Tanzania?
Yes, solo volunteers are welcomed and well-supported. Medi Trip provides airport pick-up, a personal coordinator, and day-to-day support. You will also be living with other volunteers from around the world. As with any travel abroad, forward planning, awareness of local customs, and personal responsibility are important.
