This eight-week course comprises 15 modules, each focusing on different aspects of elephant physiology, welfare, and care. Students explore the complex social behaviors and unique anatomy of these gentle giants. They study a range of topics, from common diseases and medical conditions to training and conservation concerns.

An elephant veterinarian teaches this course and includes weekly online lecture recordings, supplemental learning materials, and assignments that students can complete at their own pace. It also has twice-weekly forum-based discussions or live discussions with experts in the field. They meet with experts in this area: a veterinarian, a trainer, a conservationist, and a sanctuary owner. 

Upon successful completion, a transcript from Iowa Wesleyan University with the three credits is awarded to students.
