I had a wonderful experience!

I am incredibly thankful to the Learn Russian in the EU program for helping me experience Russian language and culture so fully and personally. The memories I made with my host mother and my language partner remain especially meaningful to me, and those relationships continue to bring life to the way I engage with Russian to this day.
Most impactful semester of my college experience.

I could not believe when I had to leave Daugavpils that the time passed so quickly! The spring 2025 semester in Daugavpils, Latvia was without a doubt the most impactful semester of my college experience. In Daugavpils, I was fully immersed in the Russian language both at the university and by living with my amazing host family. All of my classes where very interesting and the professors where absolutely phenomenal people. That being said, a great chunk of my learning was done on the weekend excursions organized by the program to Riga, Vilnius, Kaunas, and Tallinn. The plethora of history in the Baltic States is incredible and to be able to live and interact with locals was a truly an eye-opening experience. The friends and connections I made in Daugavpils will last a lifetime and I cannot wait to visit Latvia again!
Enhanced my Russian speaking skills, and fully immersed myself in Latvian and Latgalian culture!

Participating in the Learn Russian in the EU program in Latvia has been one of the most formative academic experiences of my undergraduate career. The administrators are consistently kind, attentive, and genuinely invested in each student’s growth. They helped me navigate everything from housing to local logistics, creating an environment in which I felt supported from the first day. The professors are exceptionally knowledgeable, especially in areas connected to Soviet history, regional politics, and the linguistic complexities of the post-Soviet space. What stood out to me most was their ability to tailor instruction to students with widely different skill levels. Outside the classroom, the program offers a thoughtful set of excursions. Some take you to other EU countries, such as Estonia and Lithuania, where you gain insight into how these societies have navigated their own transitions since the Soviet era. Local excursions within Latvia provide invaluable context on the country’s complex history, from its pagan roots to wars of occupation and the Cold War. In Latgale, I encountered a cultural world that is both distinct and remarkably welcoming. Visiting Old Believer communities, learning about local Polish and Belarusian diasporas, and exploring the region’s religious and linguistic traditions helped me understand Latvia as far more than a site for language study. One of the highlights of my time here was the visit to the Daugavpils fortress, where volunteers reenact Napoleonic-era battles. It is an experience that brings history to life in a way that books simply cannot.

Absolutely fantastic study abroad program
March 17, 2020by: Philip Posner - United StatesProgram: AY/Semester Study Abroad Programs in Daugavpils, Latvia
This study abroad program exceeded all expectations I had for it, and words cannot describe how much I learned from and enjoyed my time living in Daugavpils. I took half of my classes on the Russian language and the other half on a mix of political science and history topics. The professors were all extraordinarily knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and eager to teach me. There were an enormous range of courses to choose from, which allowed me to design my program specifically to fit my personal goals. The living situation was ideal for learning Russian. I had an amazing host mom and brother, who made me feel at home from day one. My host mom was incredibly kind and caring, cooked delicious meals, and was always there to help me out or give me advice. Almost every day after dinner, we would sit, drink tea, and chat for about an hour - which was almost as valuable as my formal classes for getting me comfortable conversing in Russian. And if I finished my homework for the night, my host brother would always be eager to play hide and seek, watch a cartoon, or show me his enormous collection of toys and gadgets. The excursions were also an incredibly valuable part of this program. We traveled all over the Baltics and even to Minsk, Belarus, learning about and experiencing each countries history and culture. The location of Daugavpils was also ideal for traveling on the weekends. Cheap buses and trains left straight for Riga, Vilnius, Tallinn, Warsaw, and other major cities. But it was often tempting to just stay in Daugavpils and organize a trip to our private banya (we must have gone 12 times in the fall semester), volunteer to take dogs for walks at the animal shelter, or just гулять with friends around the city. I have no complaints about this program and would recommend it to anyone who wants to improve their Russian and have a blast while doing so.
Improving my Russian language and having an incredible and unique cultural experience
January 12, 2020by: Conor Cunningham - United StatesProgram: AY/Semester Study Abroad Programs in Daugavpils, Latvia
I want to start by saying this program really went above and beyond my expectations in every way! The program was well balanced providing both an excellent academic experience along with a profound and highly informative cultural immersion aspect. For me, increasing my proficiency in Russian and experiencing the diverse culture of both Latvia and the larger northern eastern European region were my main goals. After a semester, I can say with absolute certainty that this is one of the best programs available for those who are looking to increase their language proficiency. The program is located in Daugavpils (a Russian speaking city in eastern Latvia) which makes it an ideal location for Russian studies. The academic aspect of the program is structured well with a mixture of both core Russian language classes and a wide selection of elective courses taught in Russian and tailored to each student’s personal criteria. This is made possible by the excellent teachers and the fact that the classes are very small (usually 2-6 students per class). In addition, each student has the chance to live with a host family which, for me, was really a crucial part of increasing my language proficiency and in acquiring a much deeper understanding of the culture and history of this region. My host family and particularly my host mother is one of the most gracious, genuine, and kind people I have ever met. The excursions are highly informative and diverse in both theme and location. I personally loved the opportunity to travel to Belarus! Our excursion guide and organizer is phenomenal! He has a deep knowledge of each location's historical and cultural relevance and I can speak for everyone on the program when I say that he really makes every excursion even more fun and interesting. In addition, the entire program is run by highly capable and helpful management that is always there to help make sure your experience is the best it can be. Unlike many other study-abroad programs, Learn Russian in the EU was very helpful right from the start. They helped me with logistics early on, long before I had arrived in Latvia. I have to add that being inside the EU makes traveling around Europe easy. From past experience in other study-abroad programs, I can say that this program is by far the best of those I have partaken in and especially for those who want to master Russian.
A unique program for Russian study
January 07, 2020by: Eliza Kenyon - United StatesProgram: AY/Semester Study Abroad Programs in Daugavpils, Latvia
Note: I participated in the semester long program for college students (Russian Language and Political Science Program) When most people think about studying Russian abroad they tend to picture themselves in Russia. Before participating in this program I actually did spend two months in Irkutsk, Russia, and I can honestly say that my time spent in Daugavpils was just as valuable and helped me improve my Russian skills just as much. It is 100% true that practically everyone in the city knows Russian (I only met 2 or 3 people who did not know it very well, but they still understood it), and that Russian is what you hear in restaurants, stores, and on the streets. I took 4 different Russian language classes, and each of them helped me improve my Russian skills in different ways. Two of my classes were very focused on conversation, which allowed me to practice using new words and grammatical constructions. One class focused on idioms, which actually helped improved my reading comprehension, as I frequently have seen the idioms I learned in the books I read. Finally, one class focused on stylistics where we spent most of the time going over the official business style of speech. While this class was definitely the most taxing, it really helped improved my reading comprehension with regards to news articles. I also took some classes focused on political science, which were taught in Russian and were quite interesting. Besides formal classes, each student has to meet a few times a week with a conversation partner. My partner was amazingly helpful and was always able to come up with different subjects to discuss. At the end of each meeting he also gave me a list of the words I didn't know so that I could improve my vocabulary. The host family situation was nice as well. I lived with a mom and her daughter, and they were always very kind and took time to speak with me. I had my own room, and my host mom cooked me breakfast and dinner every day, which was really good for me since I am a super lazy college student. The lunch situation was good as well, as during the weekdays one can easily buy a business lunch in the city for 3.5-5 euros. Food in general is very cheap compared to American standards. Finally, I wanted to briefly write about all of the excursions that are included. It seemed like almost every weekend I was busy doing something. During the first few weeks excursions take place in/around Daugavpils and include kayaking, horseback riding, trips to different WWII memorials, and a trip to the banya (Russian sauna). Later on we also had trips to Riga, and to two cities in Lithuania. I also paid a bit extra to go on a trip to Minsk, Belarus, which was definitely one of the highlights. When I was not on excursions organized by the program I was usually travelling with other students. Bus or train tickets to Riga only cost 4-7 euros and airbnbs are extremely cheap. We also organized a trip to Estonia, and I was even able to visit Ukraine during Thanksgiving. Overall, I would definitely recommend this program. It is much cheaper than any other study abroad programs I have found, the classes were amazing, and the excursions were top-notch. I also wanted to mention that the people in charge of the program are super helpful. I actually signed up for the program around 2 weeks before it began, and Sergey Simonov was very helpful in helping me do so. Finally, I have to mention Jānis who took us on all of our excursions, organized trips to the banya, and was named by probably everyone in the group as one of the best aspects of the program because of how friendly he was, and because he was always willing to help everyone.
Most influential experience of my life!
December 16, 2019by: Michael Hamilton - United StatesProgram: AY/Semester Study Abroad Programs in Daugavpils, Latvia
I loved this program so much as it didn't only focus on the language but also the culture and history. My favorite part was participating in a dance group at the university where I was able to make lots of local friends my age and learn a new style of dance. I also really enjoyed the excursions, in the United States, you simply can not see where a lot of history happened, this program showed us where history was made including the good, the bad and the ugly parts of history.
Outstanding program!

This program is without a doubt the best one you could choose if you want a Russian cultural immersion plan with a lot of options in terms of local classes, organized travel, and outstanding professors. All of the teachers and staff at Latinsoft and DU are really at the top of their profession, and each truly care about your education (and that you enjoy your time in the Baltic). I absolutely recommend this program.
Fruitful individual study

I was able to customize my own course of study at Daugavpils University, which allowed me to address those aspects of language learning that were specific to my needs. Consequently, I experienced solid academic growth through guided research and one-on-one language instruction, and I am very satisfied with the result.
The greatest adventure

Learn Russian in the European Union provided a once in a lifetime opportunity. The language classes had a great mixture of practical exercises and reading and listening assignments. Both instructors were understanding, patient, and phenomenal. They created an environment that encouraged us to try our best, make mistakes, and improve. Two additional classes I completed were on the history of the Baltic Region and the politics of the former Soviet Republics. Both classes were taught in Russian, making these first month or two incredibly difficult; but this forced my comprehension and speaking abilities to dramatically improve. Once again, both of these instructors were positive, patient, and knowledgeable. The contents of both courses were engaging and successfully introduced me to the history and current political systems of many countries in Eastern Europe. The host family experience was fantastic. My host mom and dad were happy to spend as much time with me as possible so that I could practice even after class. I had a private room to myself, a comfy bed, and a desk to work at. My host mom did laundry at my request and cleaned my room. She also cooked the best meals in the world! Spending so much time with them forms deep bonds and I still talk with my host family today. The immersive experience, being in an ethnic Russian household, developed a deeper understanding and greater appreciation of Russian culture and traditions. Lastly, Learn Russian in the European Union provides astounding opportunities to not only explore Latvia, but the Baltics and Eastern Europe. Planned trips that we took with the program included weekends to Lithuania (where we visited the cities of Kaunas and Vilnius), Estonia (visited the capital Tallinn), a day-trip to Finland (Helsinki), and Belarus (Minsk). Within Latvia, the program also took us to Salspil, (a memorial at the site of a concentration camp in Latvia), Riga (the capital), palaces in the countryside, and the secret Soviet nuclear bunker outside of Riga. The program also helps greatly with acquiring visas to Russia and schedules time for you to visit. We were able to spend a week in Russia, visiting Saint Petersburg and Moscow, before also flying to Astana, Kazakhstan to spend several days there in the capital city. Learn Russian in the European Union works with students to provide time outside of program travel. We were able to leave early on a Friday to fly to Kyiv, Ukraine at the end of our semester, and right before the semester began we were able to arrange travel to Germany, Austria, Hungary, and the Czech Republic. Overall, this program is well organized, educational, and fun! It was the greatest semester of learning that I have ever had and probably ever will have. Every single member of the team there is amazing and works diligently to ensure that you have the best educational and immersive experience. It is worth it!
Great immersive experience
November 13, 2019by: John-Paul Gravelines - CanadaProgram: Russian as a Foreign Language in Daugavpils, Latvia
As a regular student at "Learn Russia in the EU" in Daugavpils, I can endorse its quality of instruction, dedication of faculty, and professionalism of all the staff who make it function so well. I am still a lower-level Russian language learner, and their faculty is adept at working with beginners like me, as well as more advanced students. We learn through a combination of textbook-based work, and dialogue--often using topics of relevance to my life, which helps me relate and memorize words and grammar. Highly recommend.
