This is an ideal childcare placement if you love working with and giving attention to children. Volunteer at a center in San Jose that offers daycare services to families with limited resources. Your presence is integral in running the center and ensuring the children are properly cared for. Your exact responsibilities as a volunteer depend on your interests and experience as well as current project needs. Generally, you help make the kids feel safe and loved. You make sure they receive high-quality and engaging classes, including basic English, complemented with one-on-one support. You can also lead arts and crafts activities and organize recreational activities. The center encourages you to share creative ideas. Eligibility requirements for this internship include good communication and organization skills. The center highly values volunteers with experience in a preschool or educational setting or with TEFL certification. A basic level (Independent User Level B1 of CEFR) of Spanish is necessary. Your placement starts with one week of intensive language lessons, with the option to add more weeks for an extra cost.

Do you need experience to be a childcare volunteer in Costa Rica?

No! Whilst volunteers who have experience working with children will be valued highly, it is not a requirement to have prior experience for this project. However, having a love for children and patience are a must.

Do you need to know Spanish to volunteer in childcare in Costa Rica?

Volunteers who are already TEFL trained or have experience working in schools will be valued. Volunteers will receive 20 hours of intensive Spanish lessons one week prior to departure! If you feel you need additional lessons, this can be arranged!

What is the role of a Childcare Volunteer?

Your role as a childcare volunteer is to support local staff and ensure the children feel safe and nurtured and taught exciting learning experiences that aid in their development. The exact day-to-day activities vary depending on the volunteer’s interests.

Do you need a visa to work in childcare abroad?

It is always better to check if your passport requires a visa on your government's website. However if you need any assistance or help, please contact our Kaya advisors! Other essential documents include a police/government background check.

What is included in the price of this course?

The price of this course includes the following;

  • Homestay accommodation
  • 2 meals per day
  • Airport pick-up from San Jose International Airport
  • Pre-departure preparation pack, on-site orientation, and project induction
  • One week (20 hours) of intensive Spanish lessons
  • On-site coordinator providing 24- hour support
  • Transport by public bus to the project (private transfers available at additional cost)
