Imisi’s great time in Sri Lanka
July 22, 2025by: Imisi Adekeye - United KingdomProgram: Volunteer in Special Needs in Sri LankaMy Local team was absolutely amazing from the airport pickup which was done in a very timely and organised manner in a very comfortable car which had an A\C which was very helpful given Sri Lanka is sooo hot to my very last day there. They took really good care of us and helped arrange so many fun activities such as visiting temples and gardens and allowing us to take part in local cultural activities as well as help organise our actual volunteer activities. I had so much fun and the food was great as well as the other volunteers. I had so much fun and hope to go back one day.
Green Lion Sri Lanka
October 08, 2015by: Alicia MarieProgram: Volunteer in Special Needs in Sri LankaMy trip to Sri Lanka consists of 5 weeks and as my trip is coming to a close I just wanted to take a moment to say how incredible my experience was at the disabled orphanage. The Daya Nivasa orphanage was wonderful, the sisters are amazing and supportive and you have so many different options and classes to help with! They teach you and give you advice about how to best help the disabled. A week was not enough time to spend with those beautiful kind people. Your day would typically start at 9am in the meditation room where the sisters pick an uplifting passage to reflect on. Despite not being religious myself it is a nice time to relax in the morning. After meditation, you help with classes. There are multiple classes with groups of the similarly abled. Some colored, some did crafts, and others did basic math and abc's. Every class is unique and wonderful in their own way and at the very end there is a lovely song thanking all the kids for being there. After classes, is feeding time where you help some of the less abled or the young children eat. After that you are given a break from about 12 until 2pm where you can come back and just spend quality time with the people in the orphanage or some volunteers like myself went to volunteer at a different orphanage for girls in the afternoon. Overall, the sisters are extremely helpful and really care about you and how you feel. And they really appreciate you and all the work you do. I will cherish this experience for years to come!
Hi Alicia, Thanks for sharing a little from your volunteer abroad experience in Sri Lanka. It sounds like you had a really memorable trip. Thanks for being an IVHQer and we hope to see you on another IVHQ program soon.
