Volunteer in Childcare in Kandy, Sri Lanka
Support local nurseries and community childcare centres that serve young children from disadvantaged backgrounds. You will contribute to creating a safe and caring environment where children can learn, play and develop social skills even if their families face economic hardship. Your tasks typically include assisting with simple lessons, organising games, storytelling, singing or creative play sessions, supporting basic English or language learning, helping with mealtimes and hygiene routines, supervising playtime and nap time, and contributing to keeping the childcare space clean and welcoming. This program is ideal for volunteers who enjoy working with young children, have patience, energy and a friendly attitude. No previous childcare or teaching experience is required because local staff offer training and guidance from your first day. Kindness, flexibility and respect for local culture are the most important qualities. In your free time you can explore Kandy’s nearby cultural sites, visit lakes and mountains, enjoy local food, experience Sri Lankan traditions and spend time connecting with your host community while learning about life in a historic region of Sri Lanka.

I want to use my privilege for the greater good.
September 03, 2024by: Theresia RessmannI am so happy that I could experience these two weeks in Sri Lanka. I met so many amazing people and started to think about how privileged my life is a lot more. I know, that you don’t choose your privilege, or lack thereof; you’re born with it. And that´s why I want to use my privilege for the greater good. I loved to spend time with the local kids and families and was sad when I had to leave. Next time I will stay for longer, that´s for sure.
Adventure of a Lifetime
January 24, 2019by: Roland Assaf - United StatesThe week I spent in Sri Lanka was surely not enough, the only regret I have is not staying longer. From mountains to beaches Sri Lanka is the perfect country to satisfy any adventurous soul. Traveling with IVHQ made my trip more enjoyable, I was well prepared, the staff helped us familiars with our new environment and local culture, they were always available for any inquiries and made sure we were comfortable throughout the trip. The accommodation was decent, clean and well equipped and the other volunteers I met were all amazing. At the childcare program, I got the chance to help and assist kids in a pre-school, it was fun and satisfying as nothing is more rewarding than the smile on their faces at the end of the day. Looking forward to my next adventure!
Hi Roland, thanks for sharing your feedback about the Sri Lanka Program! Sounds like you had an incredible experience. I couldn't agree more and wish I stayed longer too, so much to experience! We would love to have you volunteer with IVHQ again in the future! Samantha - IVHQ Program Manager.
Childcare in Sri Lanka
August 13, 2017by: Shirel Mani - United StatesI had the most memorable experience working with the village kids in Kandy. They truly affected me every afternoon as they waited for their ABC lessons, or singing nursery songs, and the teachers were so warm and friendly from the start. For anyone looking to be a teacher, this is amazing preparation.
Babies orphanage
February 15, 2017by: alice - AustraliaWorking in the babies orphanage was challenging yet the most rewarding experience I have come across. As soon as you arrive at the orphanage in the morning all the toddlers would be at the gate waving you in and wanting you to play with them straight away. Although it was difficult to communicate with the older children at first because of the language barrier, along the way we began to understand each other through smiles, hi-fiving and playing games with each other which is all they wanted and needed to keep them happy. At the babies orphanage the youngest at the time was just 2 months old and the oldest being around 5, this gave the opportunity to give love and care for different ages. To see how the different ages react to the love and care that they were given is beyond amazing because every child responds to you differently (smiling, blowing kisses, hugging and even calling you their aunty) which allows you to create almost a special kind of bond with each child. The orphanage was about a 45 minute drive from where we were staying and was up high in the hills which gave us amazing views from the playground where we would have our lunch break when the children were sleeping! Sri Lanka is so beautiful and to be in that kind of atmosphere and environment everyday made the experience even more memorable. Would highly recommend this project as it is all about giving the children the love that they deserve after hearing some of their stories!!
Hi Alice, We are so happy to hear that you had a rewarding experience on the Childcare project in Sri Lanka! Thanks for being a great volunteer and for persevering through the communication barrier to connect and care for the children at your placement. It has been a pleasure to have you volunteer with IVHQ and we would love to have you join us again in the future. <br/>Sarah – IVHQ Sri Lanka Program Manager
Volunteering in Sri Lankan Daycare
January 01, 2016by: Chrissy - KandyThis was such a great experience! I volunteered in a daycare in the heart of Kandy city. The children are beautiful albeit there are so little toys for them to play with. After a day the teachers quickly warm up to you and give you tea and cake. There is no English spoken and may make it hard at times. The day usually began with building with blocks where English colours and numbers were included, after some drawing or ball games followed by lunch and putting the children to sleep. You will need to be prepared as some young children do not wear nappies so they may go to the toilet anywhere, food may have ants on it and the toilets are never cleaned. However, it was one of the best experiences and I would go back in a heart beat!
Hi Chrissy, thanks for sharing a little snippet from your time volunteering with IVHQ in Sri Lanka. We’re so happy to hear that you enjoyed your time, and thanks you for being such a positive IVHQer!
Absolutely Heartwarming
June 03, 2015by: Genai Smith - Picton, OntarioAt first it was shocking to see so many disabled people in one place, wandering around. The disabilities range from mental, physical or a combination of the two. Not long after being there, I fell in love with the people and the work I was doing. This placement was incredibly rewarding. Just a smile or holding one of their hands makes their day and you can see the smile crawl across their faces. I made a special bond with someone within my first day and almost every day after that, I added a special bond to my group. By the end of my very short 3 weeks, I was trying to make plans on how to smuggle 40% of the orphanage into Canada. The staff at Green Lion (the people who look after you), are fantastic and will do anything to help you. The country is beautiful and most importantly, they need your help and you will leave every day feeling like you made a difference and made someone's day. What else can you ask for? The only thing I can ask for is another trip back! It was amazing!
Hi Genai, Wow! It’s great to hear that you had such a rewarding experience. It sounds like it was initially very confronting for you (which can often be the way for many volunteers) it’s fantastic that you were able to move through this and make the most of your volunteer experience. Thanks for volunteering with IVHQ and we look forward to having you back on another volunteer program soon!
