Introduction to Design - Spring Semester - IED Florence

This program covers creating floor plans, furniture layouts, and designing a space's look. It includes specifying furniture, fixtures, finishes, and coordinating installation. In the Spring Semester Introduction to Design, you learn design methodology—from analyzing spaces and developing concepts to creating 2D views and models to define and validate ideas.

This course teaches interior design fundamentals like materials, finishes, spatial planning, and construction for residential projects. Students learn to use industry software such as AutoCAD 2D, Photoshop, and Illustrator. Over 17 weeks, through lessons, case studies, and workshops with industry professionals, students develop theoretical and practical skills, including technical knowledge, design methods, and cultural insights. In the final project, they apply the design process considering economic and production factors. Each subject ends with a final exam, and students present their work to demonstrate their skills. Lessons run Monday to Friday morning or afternoon.

This course is ideal for beginners with a serious interest in the subject—students directly out of high school or mature students ready for a career change.
