Once-in-a-lifetime experience
September 11, 2016by: Sierra WintersI had an AMAZING experience living in Austria for three months last year on Greenheart's trimester program. Excellent family, excellent location, and excellent cultural immersion. I had no idea our cultures could be so different. Greenheart did an awesome job of making sure I was placed with a safe family that could suit my needs (I am non-smoking and vegetarian) and passions. They also were always helping us with Visa questions and the like. And my experience with Greenheart did not end after I returned from Austria. They are much more than a travel abroad program, and they are dedicated to helping alumni engage in community service (they offer grants, workshops, and conferences) and further cultural immersion. Highly, HIGHLY, recommend.

Will I be placed in a city like Vienna?
Unless you choose a destination guarantee in Vienna, it is very unlikely you will be placed in a major city. The majority of our host families live in small to medium-sized towns outside of major cities, thus, you must be open-minded to small-town life.
Will I have a cell phone and internet?
You are required to have a local Austrian phone number. Please make sure that your U.S. phone is “unlocked” so as to accept a SIM card from Austria! We give tips and advice for communication while abroad during your program.
All host families (and almost every person) in Austria have internet in their homes. There is also 4G internet widely available throughout the country.
If you have a laptop, we recommend bringing it.
When should I apply?
We recommend that you apply a minimum of 6 months before your desired semester.
The sooner you can apply, the better, as acceptance, gathering documents, and other preparations can take a long time. Read more about why applying early is a good idea.
Our final deadlines for fall start dates are March 15 and September 15 for spring departures.
