Amazing time in Peru with the dogs!
December 26, 2019by: Evie Rollinson - EnglandProgram: Peru Dog Shelter VolunteeringI loved volunteering at the Dog's Shelter, you can see that the staff there love the dogs and put their needs first. It was so fun to play with them all, they're so cute and all just want to be loved! The volunteer house was great, I enjoyed meeting people from all around the world and everybody got along so well. There was a mixture of volunteers and Globalteer interns, so meeting the Globalteer staff was really nice too. Cusco is an amazing city, there is so much to do inside the city and in the surrounding rural areas. Great restaurants, bars, museums, shops, and there are so many companies offering day and multiple day trekking trips. The cost of living in Peru is super cheap, and with food and accommodation provided I only spent money on socialising and excursions. Machu Picchu was unreal and the Salkantay trek is a must do!
Lovely dogs and people!
December 10, 2019by: Bella Roberts - United StatesProgram: Peru Dog Shelter VolunteeringI really enjoyed working at the Peru Dog Project. Though some dogs arrive in bad condition or have suffered neglect/abuse, they’re still happy dogs at heart and a joy to work with. The owners of the project are passionate and well-organized, and it was a pleasure to spend 2 weeks with them and their dogs. The facilities/kennels are simple, but the dogs have lots of space to run around, and are overall healthy and happy.

An upsetting experience
December 04, 2019by: Christine Hamilton - United KingdomProgram: Peru Dog Shelter VolunteeringI volunteered at the dog shelter in Cusco in 2017 at which time it was not possible to leave a review or if it was I was not aware of it. My experience was rather negative. I was very upset by the conditions and the way the dogs were treated to the extent that I had to stop going there after the second day. I informed the Globalteer office in Cusco of my concerns and they took quick action to address the most serious of these. After I returned home to the UK, I wrote an email to Globalteer detailing what I had seen and also setting out suggestions as to ways in which the dogs' welfare could be improved. I have been involved in animal welfare all my life and have volunteered at numerous shelters in various countries and therefore thought that my suggestions would be useful. As a Iawyer I am familiar with the UK standards. I received a response from the manager which I was not happy with as the statements contained therein did not correspond with what I had seen myself at the shelter, and direct questions were not answered. I asked him if my complaint could be forwarded to the trustees but did not hear anything from them. I then wrote a letter to each of the trustees at the company's registered address but did not receive any replies. I don’t know if my letters were forwarded. I then asked my member of parliament (MP) if he would write to the trustees for me. He kindly tried to do so but only received a reply from the manager. I am sorry to say that in this reply, which my MP sent to me, the manager stated that I was making things up about the shelter because I wanted to get a refund of the fee I paid to do the volunteer placement. It also contained the same kind of inaccurate statements that I had received myself. My MP then contacted the Animal Welfare Group in the UK Parliament about this issue, the chairman of which then wrote to Globalteer. Even he did not receive a response from the trustees but only from the manager.
Dear Christine,
Many thanks for you feedback and concern for the dogs at the Peruvian shelter. We apologise that you were not happy about how your complaint was handled.

Globalteer management in Peru interviewed yourself as well as all staff, volunteers and supporters who were present at the shelter during the time of our stay to investigate your complaint. A full incident report was conducted and concluded, and the concerns and suggestions were brought to the shelter staff.

We are sorry that you found the experience negative, but we took your complaint seriously, followed all proper procedures, and the investigation was concluded, finding no issues with the treatment of the animals at the shelter. It should be noted that no complaints have been filed by volunteers or supporters regarding the shelter before or since, nor did any volunteers present at the project with you agree with your assessment of the conditions the dogs live in.

You state that you ‘requested the complaint be forwarded to the trustees, but you never heard anything’. You were advised on 19th March that the General Manager of Globalteer, Project Manager in Peru, one Trustee in charge of animal welfare and one other staff member were all part of the investigation of your complaint. Your concern was forwarded to the trustees, and they were involved at all stages of the investigation. Though you did not hear from them directly, their conclusions aligned with ours in the responses you received from the General Manager.

As a UK charity, we were happy to report the full incident report to the UK Governments All Party Parliamentary Group on Animal Welfare. We also invited other Peruvian animal welfare charities to visit the dog shelter and read the incident report. None of the above found any issue with the shelter and accepted the conclusions of the incident report provided.

To confirm, you did ask for personal financial compensation from the charity when you made your complaint, and we are required to add this information to the incident report due to its relevance, which is why your MP was aware of this.

You will be glad to hear that the shelter has now moved to a much larger location in the countryside, allowing the dogs lots more space to run around and even allowing more dogs to be rescued. We also now have an amazing mobile veterinary clinic where we can now go out into villages around Cusco to provide care for the dogs. This is the only free charity mobile clinic in Peru and will make a huge difference to the welfare of dogs living in remote areas!

Many thanks for your continued concern for our mission to care for the animals in Peru.
