The Andean region near Guaranda is rich in biodiversity, with native forests, rivers, and traditional farmlands shaped by centuries of local knowledge. However, deforestation, agricultural expansion, and chemical fertilisers are degrading soils, reducing native vegetation, and polluting water sources.
Traditional agroforestry practices are disappearing, causing declines in pollinators, beneficial insects, and endemic birds. Migration is also leading to the loss of ancestral ecological knowledge.
As a Biology & Endemic Ecology Intern, you will participate in habitat restoration, native species reintroduction, biodiversity monitoring, and water source protection. You will work with local farmers and organisations to combine scientific approaches with traditional wisdom.
