I would likely recommend CIEE
September 12, 2019by: Alexandra J.Program: Short-term Volunteer Teaching Program in SpainI would likely recommend CIEE Teach Abroad as a method of introduction to a country. My experience has been superb. The exceptions are that it did take along time for CIEE to get a location to us (I believe due politics within the province governments which is out of CIEE's control, but regardless, these setbacks can make planning a bit difficult for some people), and you definitely need at least close to an intermediate level of the native language. I was told you wouldn't, and I've gotten by due to the help of the few English speaking locals, including members of the host family, but you will definitely get more out of the trip if you are able to. With that said, I want to reiterate that my experience could hardly be better. I would definitely recommend CIEE, but with those two qualifiers.
I have overall enjoyed my experience
September 11, 2019by: Jaime D.Program: Short-term Volunteer Teaching Program in SpainI have overall enjoyed my experience.I would advise a little bit more cultural competency training on the part of CIEE for how Spanish people behave. Many of the things they do are very different from North American Behavior. Also, I would advise future teachers to always talk to their host mother or father, whichever they are closer to if they see any problems or odd behavior. It´s more of the cultural aspect as opposed to actual problems. The teachers at my school are amazing. They are helpful and kind.My students vary from knowing no english to being quite proficient in English. This is the challenge when teaching.... But ultimately the students are excited to have you here and hopefully you return the enthusiasm.
They are extremely enthusiastic, smart, fun, and affectionate
September 03, 2019by: Adonica F.Program: Short-term Volunteer Teaching Program in SpainI am likely to recommend teaching abroad to a friend or colleague because this experience has been very rich for me so far. I love working with the students. They are extremely enthusiastic, smart, fun, and affectionate. Teaching abroad is a great way to make a difference, immerse yourself in culture exchange, travel, and have a lot of fun doing it!
