CIEE HS Summer Abroad: Marine Ecology in San Juan

Dive into Caribbean ecosystems and propose a sustainability project in San Juan! Explore ocean ecosystems in a destination at the forefront of marine research. From coral reef to mangrove conservation, San Juan offers real-world insight into how communities are protecting their coastal environments. Team up with other Global Navigators on a group sustainability project focused on preserving marine ecosystems in Puerto Rico. Join expert-led classes and meet local ecologists working to safeguard endangered species like sea turtles and manatees. Visit marine reserves like the Submerged Gardens, home to over 43,000 acres of protected marine habitat. Discover local conservation projects, such as coral gardening, where damaged reef sections are regrown in nurseries and transplanted back into the ocean. Travel to new corners of the island and experience the glowing waters of Laguna Grande, one of the world’s few bioluminescent bays. You’ll also explore the El Yunque rainforest, the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest system home to rare wildlife, like the endangered Puerto Rican parrot.
