CIEE HS Summer Abroad: Marine Ecology in Athens
Program Overview
Splash into the Aegean Sea’s dynamic underwater ecosystems for an unforgettable Athenian summer.
Marine ecology is all about understanding how ocean ecosystems function and how human activity shapes what happens beneath the surface. Athens is an ideal place to study it, set along the Aegean Sea within the Mediterranean, a biodiversity hotspot home to more than 17,000 marine species and one of the most impacted seas in the world due to shipping traffic, dense populations, and environmental pressure. Alongside other Global Navigators, you’ll explore these challenges firsthand in a place where they’re actively unfolding.
Immerse yourself in conservation and sustainability projects, like assessing water quality and threats to ecosystems. Snorkel, explore tide pools, and meet local researchers and experts. Work with local NGOs on coastal dune restoration, helping build walking paths to direct foot traffic away from dunes.
On the island of Aegina, observe the tension between tourism and environmental protection in seaside communities. At Cape Sounion, visit the Temple of Poseidon and trace how ancient maritime trade connected people to these waters thousands of years ago. After a summer spent in the field, learning alongside new friends, you’ll leave inspired and dreaming about your own future in marine science, conservation, or beyond.
