Program Overview

Gain hands-on experience in specialty coffee production while living in one of Costa Rica's most important coffee-growing regions, Los Santos.

Participants work alongside local farmers, producers, and community organizations involved in coffee cultivation and processing. Activities may include farm work, harvesting, processing, roasting, quality control, and learning about the environmental and economic factors that shape specialty coffee markets.

Interns gain insight into the full coffee value chain, from cultivation to consumer product, while exploring sustainable farming practices and community-based approaches to rural livelihoods. Depending on the season, participants may also engage in agroforestry, marketing, and coffee entrepreneurship initiatives.

Living with a host family offers cultural immersion and insight into life in a coffee-producing community.

What kinds of activities will I participate in?

Participants may assist with coffee cultivation, harvesting, processing, roasting, quality control, and other activities depending on the season and placement. Responsibilities vary throughout the year and are designed around current farm and community needs.

Do I need experience in coffee production or agriculture?

No prior experience is required. This program is open to students and professionals interested in agriculture, sustainability, food systems, business, and specialty coffee. Participants receive guidance from local producers and coordinators.

Do I need Spanish to participate?

We welcome participants with beginner to advanced Spanish skills. Spanish is helpful for communicating with host families and local producers, but beginners can still participate. We recommend learning basic Spanish before arrival to support your integration.

What support is provided during the program?

Participants receive pre-arrival guidance, a local orientation, placement support, weekly one-on-one check-ins, and access to emergency support from our local team throughout their stay.

What are the living conditions like?

Participants live with host families in rural coffee-growing communities. Housing is modest but comfortable and includes basic amenities. Living with a host family offers cultural immersion and insight into local agricultural lifestyles.
