An experience of a lifetime, to remember for a lifetime!
July 31, 2025by: Marc Frick - South AfricaI had been teaching in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, and when my contract expired I decided to take the opportunity to do volunteer work; something I had been wanting to do for decades (I am 60). After sifting through many options I got accepted at AHHA Education, an NGO in Kampot, Cambodia. The section of AHHA that I got recruited for is based in the town itself, whereas two other sections, including a school, are based outside, but close to, the town. So you will not be based in a remote rural area like some volunteer programs are. I worked in the Communications Department of the NGO where we focused on activities involved in raising much-needed funds to support the school program. My business and marketing skills were very much appreciated by AHHA and they were always happy to show their gratitude. The volunteering experience itself was very humbling and satisfying, and is something I would recommend everybody should do at least once in the lifetime. I'm really happy I did it. My advice to future travelers on this program? When you are putting in your hours you will find that time moves faster when you think of your efforts not as work that you have to do, but rather as service to others who really need your help. The rewards will also be greater with this attitude.
Highly Recommended NGO in Cambodia
July 31, 2025by: Gianne RV Antonio - PhilippinesI have done a lot of volunteering projects since 2015, and I can safely argue that I know what a good organization is, and what makes a worthwhile volunteering experience. This group in Kampot, Cambodia certainly offered a unique blend of professional development, cultural immersion, and meaningful contribution to the local community. Volunteers have the opportunity to engage in a variety of roles tailored to their interests and skills—including housekeeping in a locally-run boutique hotel, teaching at an international school, and contributing to office work or digital marketing efforts. Each area presents its own rewarding challenges and the chance to make a positive impact. Thanks to Peter for facilitating this experience and for ensuring that the volunteers and the hosts meet their expectations. What truly sets this organization apart is its mission-driven approach. The NGO operates with integrity, empathy, and a deep commitment to community empowerment. The staff are incredibly welcoming, culturally sensitive, and take the time to make each volunteer feel respected, heard, and supported throughout their stay. the Director is an epitome of servant leadership and sets the example on how to treat volunteers. Daily interactions with the other volunteers feel more like collaboration than assignment. Beyond the work, the project encourages learning and exchange—whether it’s through shared meals, language practice, or short excursions to explore Cambodia’s rich heritage. I gained not only professional skills but also lifelong friendships and a broader perspective on global citizenship. This program is ideal for anyone seeking personal growth, cross-cultural connection, and a chance to be part of something bigger than themselves. I wholeheartedly recommend it to future volunteers and believe it will be a transformative experience. I plan to be back and work with them again soon.
Awesome AHHA
August 01, 2025by: Emma De Wit - BelgiumI volunteered for 1 month at AHHA Education in Pnomh Penh. I worked in de admin office inside the school. My main responsibility was to build a network of sponsors so they could help out financially or projectwise or organizations that have future opportunities for the students. I also supporter the other volunteers with writing some project proposals. I learned a lot and met amazing volunteers, locals and students. The accommodation is basic but nothing a traveler can't handle 😉. The people are golden and besides the very helpful and valuable work there is definitely room for fun 😊.
