Medical, Nursing & Healthcare Internships in Uruguay
by: Adelante Abroad
Shadow a doctor in the public medical sector, with an opportunity to rotate between the emergency rooms of two hospitals, ambulance services, and a private practice. This internship program is an excellent opportunity for pre-med, nursing, or ER students. Like in the US, doctors in Uruguay do a little of everything each day—they have set office hours and days scheduled for surgeries. This means your internship schedule is varied. It could be 3 days in one hospital and 2 days in another, while the following week could focus on supporting the ambulance service. Shifts last 12–24 hours, so your days/hours will differ. Montevideo is the best-kept secret for interning abroad. Its seasons are reversed. When it's cold in the upper hemisphere, it is warm in Uruguay, with summer starting in December. The capital city is surrounded on three sides by beaches, connected by a wide, paved boardwalk, which is an excellent and safe place to jog, bike, stroll, water gaze, or people watch. Participating in this medical and health program lets you travel around Uruguay while upgrading your resume and improving your Spanish fluency. Submit a $325 application deposit to secure your spot!

What type of medical internships are available in Uruguay?
Medical internships in Uruguay offer a primarily shadowing-based experience within a hospital setting. Interns observe daily hospital operations, including patient care, departmental workflows, and administrative processes. Previous participants have had the opportunity to observe surgeries, follow physicians across multiple departments, and gain insight into how medical staff manage patient interactions in a professional healthcare environment.
Do I need to speak Spanish to participate in a medical internship?
Yes, some Spanish language is required to participate in a medical internship. Applicants must have at least a B2 (intermediate) level of Spanish to communicate effectively with patients and medical staff. In addition, a minimum commitment of two months is required to ensure meaningful clinical exposure and hands-on learning in a hospital setting.
How long does a medical internship last in Uruguay?
Medical internships in Uruguay are anywhere from two months to six months, depending on the intern’s availability and learning goals.
