In China, education holds high value, evident from the 91% literacy rate and intense competition for university admission, with over 11 million students enrolled in 1,500 colleges and universities. English-language education has gained significance over the past 25 years, leading to a growing demand for native English teachers. While English becomes mandatory in junior and senior middle school, it's optional in primary school. China follows a nine-year compulsory schooling system, with higher education available to those who pass compulsory level examinations. The academic year comprises two semesters, starting in September and ending in June, with a winter vacation around the Lunar New Year. School schedules differ from those in the U.S., with students attending public school five days a week for about 8.5 hours per day, often supplemented by additional courses in the evenings and weekends.
