What inspired you to travel abroad?
In college, I made a life-changing decision to study abroad. I absolutely loved the experience - I explored a new country, met new friends from all over the world, and stepped out of my comfort zone. I wanted another experience like that before settling down and working a job in the business realm - perhaps this time a bit more integrated in the culture than being a university student. This led me to teach abroad in Thailand.

Why did you choose TravelBud?
Moving abroad is a huge decision. Not only are you leaving behind friends, family, jobs (and pretty much everything else!), you’re also taking a huge step into the unknown. This can be a bit unnerving. I’m a huge planner and combed the internet to find the best reputable company to teach abroad with. My research led me to TravelBud. They had great reviews and I felt reassured with their 24-hour support while preparing for the move.
What was your favorite part about Thailand?
The generosity of Thai people is truly astounding. They are so proud of their culture and want to share local customs and traditions. Thailand’s nickname as the ‘Land of Smiles’ is truly fitting. Everyone is kind and friendly - they appreciate the attempt to speak Thai and will even help out a bit. The Thai friends I have made here always amaze me with their generosity and kindness.
What made your experience abroad extraordinary?
I think my favorite part of living abroad is fully experiencing a new culture. Trying local Thai food and trying to up my ability to eat spicy dishes, taking Thai language lessons and practicing with local friends, and learning about local traditions and customs. Thai people are more than happy to share their culture and customs with you.
How did the local program staff support you throughout your program?
TravelBud was extremely supportive before departure and kept in touch throughout my teaching experience. I had tons of questions and TravelBud was able to answer all of them in a timely manner and calm my nerves of moving abroad.
What's one thing you wish you would have done differently during your time abroad?
Hmm… There’s not much that I would change. My advice to someone moving abroad is to be flexible and adapt! We hear that phrase so much, however, it’s really important to keep in mind - especially in a relaxed culture and a ‘mai bpen rai’ (no worries) Thai lifestyle.
Describe what a typical day in your life abroad looked like.
On weekdays, I wake up and head to my favorite local coffee shop. I spend about 45 minutes enjoying a fresh cup of joe and chatting with local friends. Then, I’m off to school. Some days I help out with assembly in the morning before classes. I’m at school from about 7:30 to 4:30 teaching classes and prepping for the week. After school, I enjoy working out at the local gym or a run around the moat here - it’s a beautiful part of the city. I usually have dinner at the local market where I can pick up a delicious curry for about 50 baht (roughly $1.75 USD). I practice some Thai (on good days) and hang out with some of the other teachers from my school).
What did you enjoy doing in your free time abroad?
Muay Thai at the gym, running around the park, weekend trips to local cities, taking Thai lessons, exploring markets, and trying new food.
What type of accommodation did you have? What did you like best about it?
I lived in a small studio apartment. It’s reasonably priced and my room on the sixth floor looked out over a forested area. I loved waking up in the mornings and watching the birds and the trees across the street. The apartment was located centrally and was about a five-minute bike ride to my school, a five-minute ride to the night market, and two-minute walk to 7/11.

What is one thing every future participant should know about your program before their program begins?
Don't stress too much. Moving abroad is a lot of work, however, things will all fall into place.
Would you recommend TravelBud to others? Why?
I would recommend TravelBud to those thinking about moving abroad. They are helpful and throughout my research, one of the best programs for the price.
What do you feel is the biggest benefit of traveling abroad?
I think travelling abroad is important for everyone to experience. Experiencing another culture and adapting to local customs is essential for understanding others with different ideas and views. Travelling builds empathy, compassion, and understanding for others - which is something the world could use more of nowadays.
Now that you're home, how has your time abroad impacted your life?
I am more open to trying new things - activities, restaurants, food, and events. I have an open mind and appreciate other cultures because there is so much to learn from them.
What does meaningful travel mean to you?
Anyone could take a vacation somewhere and have a wonderful time laying on a resort beach, enjoying all inclusive drinks, and basking in the sun. I’m not saying this isn’t wonderful - we all need to relax sometimes. But is it meaningful? To me, meaningful travel is about truly experiencing a new culture. Learn a few words, try to converse with locals, try new foods and ask what they’re called. Explore places off-the-beaten path and try to learn everything you can from local people and guides.
