What inspired you to travel abroad?

I decided to go abroad because as an aspiring health-care professional, I wanted to actually have personal experiences with cultures different from my own and to be able to make educated decisions on a global level.

Why did you choose your specific Odyssey in Athens Study Abroad Program, Webster Athens and what made them a good choice?

I chose Athens, Greece because I knew how supportive the program would be for students. They are very well organized and structured and make you feel secure the entire duration of your stay.

Our program was structured to make sure we got the most out of our stay. Our coordinator, Dina, had planned activities almost weekly so that we got the full Athens experience. We would do group trips to museums, restaurants, historic sites, etc. This was good because it was not just a touristy experience. Dina was able to explain everything to us very deeply and we quickly became more comfortable with the area. I valued this because I had little knowledge of Greek culture and language when I moved to Greece, but after about two weeks of these structured outings, I did not feel insecure going out alone.

What was your favorite part about Athens, Greece?

All of the history! Greece is a mega center of all things relevant in modern culture. There was not a single day where I did not feel inspired by all of the history around me and the importance it plays in our everyday lives. It was amazing to see where ancient philosophers used to meet, where the first Olympic Games were held, and where all of the myths are centered around. I felt a deeper appreciation for what I was learning in my classes just by physically being in Greece. I was able to visualize what life might have been like for the ancient Greeks, and it was truly a once in a lifetime experience to stand where these incredible stories began.

What made your experience abroad extraordinary?

My experience abroad was extraordinary because of the flexibility to travel to many parts of Greece and other parts of Europe. I was able to travel to many Greek islands, including Santorini and Crete, as well as historic locations such as Epidavros. I enjoyed my time on the islands to relax and get a feel of how different they are from "mainland" Greeks. I felt an overwhelming welcoming sense of community and enjoyed immersing myself in their culture. Epidavros was incredible because the first amphitheater was still intact and we were able to physically stand where the first plays were ever performed.

What was your favorite local dish and activity?

My favorite local dish was a gyro! Although we have them in America, it is SO much different in Greece! It is an easy and cheap street food that tastes fresh and is incredibly filling. I am so disappointed when I go to get a gyro here now because I know nothing will compare. My favorite activity was walking along the perimeter of the Acropolis. There is a beautiful walkway full of culture that is so relaxing to enjoy on a nice day.

How did the local program staff support you throughout your program?

Dina was the most amazing support I could have asked for abroad. She had everything planned and made me feel comfortable leaving home for the first time. She also made sure that we felt comfortable in Athens and immersed us in the culture.

What's one thing you wish you would have done differently during your time abroad?

I wish I would have spent more time with the local students at my university and not just the other Americans.

Describe what a typical day in your life abroad looked like.

I would wake up, walk to class, make food with my roommates, and then spend time wandering around Athens alone looking at all of the sites and having some alone time before rejoining my roommates.

What did you enjoy doing in your free time abroad?

I enjoyed walking! Athens is such a walking-friendly city and within a few weeks I felt totally comfortable and not lost.

What type of accommodation did you have? What did you like best about it?

I lived with other American female roommates. I feel like this was the best situation because we felt independent, but still had one another.

What is one thing every future participant should know about Odyssey in Athens Study Abroad Program, Webster Athens?

You should know that you will have a very structured experience while you are in Athens, and that it is a good thing!

Why should a student consider choosing Greece as their study abroad destination?

Students should consider Greece as a location to study abroad because it is an experience that not many people get to fully appreciate. Most people see Greece as just a vacation spot, but the culture is so much more than that. I am so thankful I was able to stay here for an extended period of time and really understand a culture that I otherwise would have taken for granted.

What do you feel is the biggest benefit of traveling abroad?

When you travel abroad, you have such a unique perspective that only those who have been in your shoes can understand.

Now that you're home, how has your time abroad impacted your life?

I am a completely different person than I was when I first went abroad. I am more mature, think through my decisions, and have a stronger sense of empathy.

What does meaningful travel mean to you?

Meaningful travel means putting yourself as a priority, being vulnerable, and exploring the world on your terms.
