What inspired you to travel abroad?
As a fifth-year medical student at the Copperbelt University School of Medicine in Zambia, I felt a profound drive to grasp global health through the lens of Africa. Despite living on this magnificent continent, I realized I knew very little about the intricate cultural nuances and healthcare systems that flourished in other African nations.
This gap in knowledge ignited my passion for exploration, and that’s where Child Family Health International (CFHI) came into play, serving as the perfect launching pad for my journey. “The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page.” This quote by Saint Augustine echoed in my mind throughout my eye-opening experience with CFHI in Kabale, Uganda. It was a powerful reminder of the importance of immersing ourselves in different cultures and embracing unique healthcare systems.
Why did you choose the Global Health in Kabale, Uganda program?
Being an African student, I realized how we often overlook the incredible wealth of opportunities for growth and adventure right within our own continent. We are quick to associate study abroad experiences with Western nations, missing the opportunity of Africa's bursting and rich cultures and diverse communities just waiting to be explored!
We also do not often venture beyond our national borders and immerse ourselves in the vibrant social, economic, and cultural tapestry of our neighboring countries.

What was your favorite part about Kabale, Uganda?
I fell head over heels for Kabale, captivated by its lush mountainous scenery and cool, refreshing climate. Truly, as the books say, it is the pearl of Africa—a shining gem that embodies the essence of Uganda.
These views were incredible to watch, and hard to resist for a comfortable and mindful sensation and meditation.
What made your experience abroad extraordinary?
The program offered a comprehensive blend of learning experiences that enriched me in several key areas. It provided valuable insights into cultural diversity, fostering an appreciation for different perspectives and ways of life.
Additionally, the emphasis on communication skills equipped me with the tools necessary for effective interaction in various professional settings. Professionalism was also a central theme, with structured modules designed to enhance workplace conduct and ethical standards.
Overall, the program's thoughtfully organized framework encouraged holistic growth and development, preparing participants for success in an increasingly interconnected world.

Community Outreach
How did the local program staff support you throughout your program?
I received a warm welcome from my preceptors, Prosper and Praise, who had kindly awaited my arrival at the airport, despite experiencing flight delays. Their graciousness and delightfulness were evident, even after a long wait.
I developed a strong rapport with Prosper through our regular interactions and cultural exchanges. Additionally, I formed a meaningful connection with the staff, particularly with Madam Bibiana, who expertly managed the kitchen, her husband, Mr. Fred, and the diligent Doreen, who oversaw cleaning duties. They embraced me as if I were part of their family.
I also had the privilege of engaging with the local director, Dr. Geoffrey Anguyo, a knowledgeable and affable individual with extensive experience in his field and in medicine. Our discussions covered a wide range of topics related to his work, the local context, and global health issues, providing valuable insights.
What's one thing you wish you would have done differently during your time abroad?
I recognize that I could have benefited from a more strategic approach by establishing a clear set of goals to guide my participation in this program. Initially, I approached it with optimism, immersing myself in the experience without defining specific objectives.
As a result, I allowed the program to shape my development, which has been a valuable, albeit less structured, learning opportunity.

Each walk was an adventure, revealing hidden trails and breathtaking vistas that filled me with awe. The culinary experiences were equally delightful. I developed a genuine appreciation for the local cuisine and eagerly participated in communal meals.
Our cook, a true culinary artist, took the time to teach me various recipes. We would often gather in the kitchen, swapping stories and secrets of flavors, which deepened my connection to the community.
Additionally, I loved venturing beyond the town for community outreach programs. These trips allowed me to engage with others, share experiences, and contribute to our collective well-being. Each journey not only broadened my horizons but also strengthened my bond with the people around me.
