What inspired you to work for Young Surgeons Travel?
What inspired me to work for Young Surgeons Travel was the opportunity to apply my technical skills to a mission that truly matters—empowering young medical professionals to access global training and surgical experiences. As a software and web developer, I’ve always wanted my work to make a tangible impact, and this organization merges healthcare, education, and technology in a way that directly improves lives.
I was drawn to the challenge of building systems that support real-time logistics, secure data handling, and seamless user experiences for a community of professionals who often work in high-pressure environments. Seeing how my work can help streamline their journeys and make medical training more accessible across borders has been both humbling and motivating.
Describe a typical day at work.
A typical day at work starts with a quick review of my task board—prioritizing urgent updates for the travel management portal, user dashboards, or booking automation systems. I usually begin with a stand-up meeting where the tech team aligns on progress, roadblocks, and timelines, especially if we’re deploying a new feature or integrating a third-party API (like for flight or visa services).
Most of my day involves writing clean, scalable code (often in JavaScript, PHP, or Python), maintaining databases, and testing modules to ensure a smooth experience for our users—primarily young surgeons coordinating international travel for training and missions. I also spend time debugging issues reported by users or our support team and implementing frontend improvements based on feedback.
Depending on the sprint cycle, I may join planning sessions with our product manager, collaborate with the UI/UX designer, or present progress reports. By the end of the day, I document code changes and sync up with the team to make sure everything's on track for deployment.
Why do you do what you do?
I do what I do because I’m passionate about building digital solutions that make a real-world impact. As a Software/Web Developer at Young Surgeons Travel, I get to combine my technical skills with a meaningful purpose—helping young medical professionals access global opportunities for training, collaboration, and humanitarian missions. Knowing that the systems I develop support life-saving initiatives and career growth motivates me every day. It's more than just writing code—it's being part of something that empowers others to do good in the world.
What is your favorite part of your job?
My favorite part of the job is seeing my work directly contribute to something meaningful. Whether it's building a secure booking system or improving the user experience on our site, I enjoy knowing that what I create helps young surgeons connect with life-changing travel opportunities. It’s incredibly rewarding to blend technology with a purpose that supports global health and professional development.
How do you use your education and international background in your current role?
With a BSc in Computer Science and an international perspective, I bring both technical expertise and a global mindset to my role. My education provides a strong foundation in software development, systems design, and problem-solving, which I apply daily when building secure, scalable web solutions for Young Surgeons Travel. My international background helps me consider diverse user needs, cultural nuances, and accessibility, especially when developing tools meant for users from different parts of the world. This combination ensures the platforms I build are both technically robust and globally user-friendly.
What challenges do you often face, and how do you overcome them?
One of the main challenges I often face is building systems that meet both the technical requirements and the dynamic needs of an international user base, often with limited resources or time constraints. Working across different time zones and ensuring compatibility across various devices can also be demanding. I overcome these challenges by staying highly organized, using agile development practices, and keeping open communication with the team. I also prioritize user feedback and conduct thorough testing to make sure the solutions I develop are reliable and intuitive for everyone.

Currently, I’m working on enhancing the Young Surgeons Travel website by improving its user experience, optimizing performance for faster loading times, and ensuring it’s mobile-responsive. I’m also developing a custom booking system tailored to the unique needs of our users, allowing them to manage travel plans and view resources more easily. Additionally, I’m integrating backend analytics to help the organization make informed decisions based on user behavior and engagement patterns.
What advice would you tell your pre-travel self?
I would tell my pre-travel self to embrace flexibility and adaptability. There are always unexpected challenges when traveling, whether it's technical issues or changes in plans, but having a mindset of problem-solving and staying open to new experiences will make the journey much smoother. I would also remind myself to take time to truly absorb the culture and appreciate the local environment, as it’s often those moments that become the most memorable and impactful.

Why is it important for people to travel abroad and experience new cultures?
Traveling abroad and experiencing new cultures is crucial because it broadens our perspectives and helps foster empathy, understanding, and tolerance. Exposure to different ways of life allows individuals to challenge preconceived notions and learn from diverse viewpoints. It enhances personal growth by pushing people out of their comfort zones, building adaptability, and cultivating open-mindedness. For professionals, especially in fields like healthcare, travel provides opportunities to witness global challenges firsthand, offering unique insights that can improve their practice and impact. Overall, cultural exchange enriches our lives, helping us build a more connected and compassionate world.
Why do you think learning a new language is important?
Learning a new language is important because it opens doors to better communication and deeper understanding of other cultures. It allows individuals to connect with people from different backgrounds, fostering stronger relationships both personally and professionally. In today’s globalized world, knowing multiple languages can enhance career opportunities and make individuals more competitive in the job market. Additionally, learning a new language improves cognitive abilities, such as problem-solving and multitasking, and enhances overall brain function. It’s also a rewarding experience that builds confidence and broadens one’s horizons, allowing for richer travel experiences and cultural exchanges.

What advice do you have for individuals thinking about going abroad?
My advice would be to approach the experience with an open mind and a willingness to embrace new challenges. Traveling abroad offers an opportunity for personal growth, so be prepared to step out of your comfort zone and adapt to different cultures and environments. Make sure to plan ahead, but also remain flexible to unexpected experiences that may enrich your journey. Learn about the local culture, customs, and language beforehand—it will make a big difference in how you connect with people and navigate your surroundings. And most importantly, stay curious, ask questions, and enjoy the journey of discovery!
What does meaningful travel mean to you?
To me, meaningful travel is about going beyond the typical tourist experience and truly connecting with the culture, people, and environment of the place you’re visiting. It’s about gaining a deeper understanding of different ways of life, broadening your perspective, and creating lasting memories that leave a positive impact—not just on you, but also on the communities you engage with. Meaningful travel is about learning, giving back, and making connections that can shape your worldview in profound ways. It’s not just about where you go, but the experiences and relationships you build along the way.
What issues do you see in the world of international education that don’t line up with your values and expectations for mutually beneficial & educational relationships between providers/programs and the communities in which they are located?
One issue that stands out is the tendency for some international education programs to focus primarily on the benefit to the participants, often overlooking the impact on the local communities. This can lead to a transactional approach rather than a truly reciprocal relationship. It’s important that education programs are not just seen as a service for participants, but as a means to create value for the local communities too. Communities should be partners in the educational experience, with shared benefits such as cultural exchange, economic support, and long-term sustainable relationships. Programs that don’t prioritize this can risk exploitation, or even unintentional harm, by failing to properly understand the cultural, social, and economic context of the communities they engage with. We must aim to foster relationships that are built on respect, mutual growth, and long-term partnerships that benefit all parties involved.
What does ethical global engagement mean to you?
Ethical global engagement means approaching international relationships and programs with integrity, respect, and a commitment to fairness. It involves recognizing and valuing the cultures, resources, and perspectives of others while fostering mutual understanding and collaboration. Ethical engagement is about ensuring that all parties involved—whether participants, host communities, or organizations—benefit equitably and sustainably. It also means being mindful of the potential impacts of our actions, whether positive or negative, and taking steps to minimize harm. This approach demands transparency, accountability, and the constant striving to create relationships that are rooted in respect and shared responsibility, rather than one-sided gain. Ultimately, ethical global engagement ensures that we contribute to the world in ways that uphold dignity, promote social good, and create lasting, meaningful change.
What hopes do you have for the future of international education?
My hope for the future of international education is that it becomes more inclusive, accessible, and transformative. I envision a future where students from diverse backgrounds can easily participate in global learning experiences, regardless of their financial situation or geographic location. I hope to see programs that emphasize cross-cultural understanding and empathy, encouraging students to not only learn about new places but also to engage deeply with the local communities they interact with.
Furthermore, I believe international education should focus on sustainability and ethical practices, fostering global citizenship while ensuring that all programs have a positive, long-lasting impact on both students and host communities. By leveraging technology, international education can also become more flexible, allowing for hybrid experiences that blend virtual and in-person interactions, making global learning accessible to even more students.
Ultimately, I hope for a future where international education plays a pivotal role in addressing global challenges, building bridges between cultures, and creating a more interconnected and compassionate world.
What qualities in program & host community relations are important to you? (And your organization?)
The key qualities that are important to me in program and host community relations are mutual respect, collaboration, and sustainability. It’s essential for both the program providers and host communities to work together as partners, with a shared goal of fostering meaningful, educational experiences. Strong communication and transparency are vital to ensure that both parties' needs and expectations are clearly understood and met.
For our organization, we prioritize long-term, positive impacts in the host community. We focus on creating programs that are sensitive to local culture, traditions, and needs, ensuring that our participants contribute in a way that is both respectful and beneficial. We also emphasize ethical practices, ensuring that the local community benefits economically and socially from our participants' engagement, without exploiting their resources or culture.
We believe that program success is not just about what students learn but how they contribute to and build lasting relationships with the communities they visit. As a result, we strive to maintain a strong, ethical relationship with all our host communities, grounded in trust, respect, and shared goals for sustainable development.
