What inspired you to work for Local Dreamers?

I founded the Local Dreamers organization because Ecuador is a beautiful country where I wanted to live for a long period of time. More importantly, Ecuador is a country with a lot of poverty and underprivileged children who deserve a chance.

Why do you do what you do?

First of all, I want to help out people in need and help local kids discover and develop their talents. I love the diversity and that not one day is the same, each day is different.

What is your favorite part of your job?

My favorite part of my job is the mix of people, cultures and languages. Not one day is the same and every week is full of surprises due to all these different people with different backgrounds.

How do you use your education and international background in your current role?

Actually I don't use it at all. I studied to be a physical therapist, but now I'm here doing something completely different. But of course I've learned a bunch of different social skills during my studies which come in very handy now.

What makes Local Dreamers special?

We are very personal and open minded. For example, if you as a volunteer have a good idea for a new project then we are all ears! Then you actually get the opportunity to start and develop your project. Of course, this is done with our help and if necessary we make some adjustments. Furthermore, we really listen to the locals and respond to their needs.

Why should someone choose Local Dreamers over competitors?

Because you can really leave your mark and do something useful with your time. Also, we're a very flexible organization where you can find your place quickly and make friends for life. Moreover, this is the perfect way to get to know Ecuador (and South America) in a unique way.

If you could participate in one of Local Dreamers’ programs, where would you go and what would you do?

I would help out in the Soccer School, because here you can work with a very big group of kids and I think sports are a great way to connect and develop.

Why is it important for people to travel abroad and experience new cultures?

Because it completely changes your view of the world and of yourself. You get a much broader view and you go home with a lot of new experiences. Often, you get many new ideas that will be of use to you for the rest of your life.

Why do you think learning a new language is important?

It gives you many more options for your professional and social life. Also, learning a new language gives you a much better understanding of the people who speak this specific language. You also learn more about their culture(s) which increases mutual respect. In short, it expands your possibilities enormously and you can benefit from it all your life.

What advice do you have for individuals thinking about going abroad?

Just do it. Don't hesitate and don't think about it too much. It will give you so much and it is life changing. The longer, the better and get as local as you can.

What does meaningful travel mean to you?

Leave something for the locals or the environment you are traveling through. Do not only take, but also give. This can be done in very different ways and it is up to everyone to find your own way around this. Volunteering is one way, but of course there are many other options.

Taking part in the projects as a volunteer was very special, especially building up a connection with the children from the So...
