The University of Haifa has the largest Arabic-speaking student population among Israeli universities, which creates an ideal environment for Arabic language studies. The city is proud of its long-standing record of co-existence and mutual respect among the Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Bahai, and Druze communities. Reflecting and supporting this tradition, the University of Haifa is likewise a multicultural institution in which students benefit from many opportunities for productive interaction.
The Intensive Arabic Summer Program is an introduction to Modern Standard/Literary Arabic and is taught at two elementary levels.
Classes meet four days a week, six hours each day, and students can expect several hours of homework every day. One additional day each week will be devoted to a field trip to visit locations of interest in Arab communities in the northern parts of Israel. The course is taught in English and is designed either for students with no prior knowledge of the Arabic language (Elementary I), for students who have already studied the Arabic alphabet (Elementary II) or for students looking to build on their grammar skills (Intermediate I).
The Arabic Language Summer Program awards five academic credits.
Haifa is an ideal urban setting for a vibrant academic center. Located on the beautiful Mediterranean Sea, Haifa is marked by an exciting multiculturalism. Long known for its ethnic and religious tolerance, life in the city offers its inhabitants and visitors alike a mosaic of enthralling cultural events: concerts, theater, museums, a vibrant night-life, and the cafes and beaches of the golden Mediterranean coastline. The Sea of Galilee, the Golan Heights, Nazareth, Tel Aviv, and Jerusalem are all within easy reach.
Program highlights include study trips to Nazareth, Acre (Akko), and the Arab villages of the Galilee. Students enjoy the wonderful warmness of Druze hospitality and the fascinating cultural lectures and workshops, which expose them to Arab culture.
