The vocational school hosts young adults between the ages of 14 and 22 who are unable to pay USD 40 per year to attend secondary school. Many of the students come from extremely poor families or are orphans. In the town of Usa River, large numbers of young people risk ending up on the streets and are often drawn into a life of crime. The school not only equips its students with educational skills, but also provides structure and a positive environment in which to acquire positive life skills. Above all, the students, the teachers and the local staff become a family and a support system for each other.
Currently the curriculum includes cooking, sewing, tourism and computer skills. English is compulsory for all students. On graduating from the program, students are helped by local staff to find jobs in their chosen field.
Each year the vocational school receives over 200 applications from young adults from the community. With limited resources, only 30 students can be admitted per year. A selection process takes place, taking into account written essays, elementary school grades, interviews, needs and levels of commitment shown by the potential student.
Volunteers in Tanzania are required who can teach valuable skills that will enable these young people to find jobs. In particular, we desperately need computer and language teachers. No prior teaching experience is necessary. The class structure and content to be taught are very flexible. Volunteers in Tanzania are encouraged to discuss teaching plans and their methodology with local staff upon arrival.
* Love Volunteers is a not-for-profit organisation that provides fun, rewarding, safe and affordable volunteering opportunities in developing countries around the world.
* Since Love Volunteers is a not-for-profit organization, it is one of the most affordable ways to help out in a developing country while being immersed in the local culture.
* Volunteers stay with host families. The volunteer rooms are comfortable and may be shared with one or two other volunteers in Tanzania. Accommodation is usually within walking or cycling distance of the project or a short bus ride away.
* Having flown into Kilimanjaro International Airport, or having arrived by bus at Arusha's Central Bus Station, volunteers are picked up by our partners. They receive an introduction to all of our partner's projects, are helped to settle in. This includes help with orientation around the towns of Usa River and Arusha and with the purchasing of various essential items such as mobile phones, food, as well as with the location of internet cafes. Support staff are on hand 24/7. Orientation can also include some Swahili lessons, if desired.
* Volunteering in Tanzania during the weekends is possible alongside local teams or you may visit orphanages where the children will be delighted to be entertained. Otherwise, this is your time to relax, perhaps just chilling at home or you could arrange to explore Arusha or travel further into Tanzania. Extended weekends can be easily arranged to allow for safari trips, if so desired, or expeditions farther afield.

Wow! Such a humbling and incredible journey. It really put things in perspective for me. Love Volunteers and their local partner did a great job. If you're heading to Tanzania say 'Hello' from me.
