There is a chronic shortage of teachers in the Maasai community schools and volunteers do not require a qualification, although some prior experience is always welcome. School holiday periods fall in April, August and December. During this time volunteer teachers may be able to participate in another placement, take a break and do some travelling or volunteer to offer vacation-time tutorials to senior students preparing for exams.
* Love Volunteers is a not-for-profit organisation that provides fun, rewarding, safe and affordable volunteering opportunities in developing countries around the world.
* Since Love Volunteers is a not-for-profit organization, it is one of the most affordable ways to help out in a developing country while being immersed in the local culture.
* You will stay as the guest of a local family while in Kenya. By lodging with a Maasai family, immersion in the local culture is assured, and it can be a way of forming lifelong relationships. Even though running water and electricity are luxuries not found in Maasai settlements, volunteer workers are well looked after.
* On the morning of the 1st of the month, our local team in Kenya will pick you up from your accommodation to begin orientation. Program staff will outline all you need to know regarding Kenya, local customs, language training options (the two languages being Kiswahili and Kimaasai), sensible precautions and travel arrangements. You will gain an introduction to the work you have selected and will meet fellow volunteers. This is followed by being welcomed at the home of your host family.
* Volunteering during the weekends is possible alongside local teams or you may visit orphanages where the children will be delighted to be entertained. Otherwise, this is your time to relax, perhaps just chilling at home or you could arrange to explore Nairobi or travel further into Kenya and East Africa. Extended weekends can be easily arranged to allow for safari trips, if so desired, or expeditions farther afield.
Volunteers must be at least 18 years old at the start of the placements. A good command of English is essential. In Kenya's Maasailand, English and Swahili are spoken; a smattering of the latter language is a great advantage, especially in more rural areas.
A good level of general fitness is necessary. There will inevitably be a good deal of walking between institutions such as schools and clinics and your accommodation.
Prices starting at USD 340 for 2 weeks.
Includes accommodation, food, an airport pick-up from Nairobi, orientation and 24/7 in-country support.

Wow! Such a humbling and incredible journey. It really put things in perspective for me. Love Volunteers and their local partner did a great job. If you're heading to Tanzania say 'Hello' from me.
