  • Description

    Project Introduction

This internship is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn and experience how environmental businesses operate while you live in one of the world's most exotic locations. Aquaculture farming has its roots in ancient practices in places like Hawaii, where people had fish-holding pools for personal use. In today's modern world, aquaculture has taken on a new importance, as the world's fish stocks are being devastated by industrial fishing practices; this means that farmed fish species are ever increasing to meet society's demands. Interns will participate in all aspects of prawn farming with an established business. Discover how fishermen-turned-farmers nurture their crops to maturity. You will also be working with local aquarium scientists discovering how these ventures relieve the pressure on the local marine environment, and help to conserve the marine life and coastlines with correct management techniques.

    Location
The aquaculture farm is located in Ao Po on the northeast side of Phuket Island, which is approximately 900km south of Bangkok. Phuket Island, located in the Andaman Sea, is Thailand's largest island and is visited by thousands of tourists every year. Ao Po is a beautiful picturesque bay 20km, yet a world away, from the noise and bustle of the tourist resorts. There is a beautiful beach right outside the farm, and a small pier nearby, from which a few tourist boats leave. The owner speaks some English--this will give you an opportunity to learn the local language as well as tutor the staff in English. This internship will give you a real taste for Thailand, as will you be working and living closely with the relaxed and friendly locals.

    Job Description
Interns will bring cultural diversity to this local Thai business, along with a valuable extra pair of hands. It is important to bring a positive work ethic to all duties. This project is an engaging introduction to all aspects of aquacultural farming--you will be involved in all facets of the business, from a managerial standpoint to the actual farming techniques. You will also be working with local aquarium scientists discovering how these ventures relieve the pressure on the local marine environment, and help to conserve the marine life and coastlines with correct management techniques.

    Availability and Requirements
Position available year-round. Applicants must have patience and sensitivity in dealing with culturally different approaches and attitudes toward the handicapped. Experience with disabled children is preferred, but not necessarily required.

    Accomodation
Accommodations are onsite at the farm, and will be shared with owner and other farm staff. You will have a private room on the second floor of a house that has full cooking and food storage facilities downstairs. Your room will be basically furnished, and the bathroom facilities are clean and well equipped.
