The summer Accelerated Chinese Language study abroad program in Shanghai, China is designed for Intermediate and Advanced Chinese language students interested in an accelerated language program where students accomplish one year of Chinese language training through intensive study both in the classroom and structured homework exercises. The language classes are small, with an average of four students; classes are typically co-taught by head language instructors and assistant language instructors who focus on accuracy and consistency of pronunciation through daily drills and other exercises. Students also take part in the CIEE Community Language Commitment by speaking only Chinese in the Chinese classroom building and to the resident staff, language teachers, and host family or Chinese roommate.
Academic Program
CIEE has been operating study abroad programs in Shanghai since 1981. Established in 1998, the CIEE Study Center in Shanghai has been hosted by East China Normal University since 2001. The Accelerated Chinese Language program is designed to provide participants with a stronger foundation in Chinese language through complete immersion in an intensive and Chinese language-only environment.
The program is appropriate for students with at least two semesters of previous college-level Chinese. All students take two accelerated language courses that focus on rapid language acquisition and are designed to move students ahead at least two Chinese language levels in all four Chinese language skills.
Academic Culture
Students attend required accelerated Chinese language classes four hours per day, Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The language classes are small, with an average of four students and no more than eight students, so active participation is very important. Classes are typically co-taught by head language instructors who introduce new content and assistant language instructors who focus on accuracy and consistency of pronunciation through daily drills and other exercises in smaller sections when necessary. In addition, students meet weekly with their instructor in one-on-one classes and with their peer tutors in structured tutorials for a minimum of four hours per week total; more tutorial hours can be arranged upon request. In China, teachers are accustomed to being treated with the highest respect. Students should be prepared to arrive to class on time, dress with care, and not eat while in the classroom. The summer term is eight weeks long and includes a three day arrival and orientation at the beginning and a three day group field trip toward the middle of the term.
* Accelerate your Mandarin ahead one year on this Chinese language-only program through small and one-on-one classes.
* Live with a Chinese host family and immerse yourself in the Chinese culture.
* Learn outside the classroom through volunteer opportunities, cultural activities, and a three-day field trip "off the tourist track" to practice Chinese in authentic situations.
Weekly visits to local markets, museums, temples, and other sites in Shanghai are specially designed for Accelerated Chinese Language students and are conducted in Chinese. Other group cultural activities include an acrobatic show and dumpling making with host families. A number of optional, extracurricular classes are available to program participants, including Chinese cooking, calligraphy, martial arts, music, mahjong, and Shanghai dialect.
