Program Overview

This short intensive course moves beyond the sun, beach, and sand modalities of experiencing the Caribbean culture. Instead, it helps to develop a nuanced, interdisciplinary understanding of the culture, history, and socio-political factors that have given rise to this dynamic region.

While the course content is sufficiently flexible to accommodate groups with particular interests, it places particular attention on the complexities and contradictions of the Caribbean. It explores the various routes of cultural formation, as well as the social institutions that shaped the region and the processes of socialization and indigenization that took place.

This course facilitates the acquisition of keen insights into the importance of the Caribbean in the creation of the modern world. It involves several excursions to culturally significant sites and meetings with cultural practitioners.
