What inspired you to travel abroad?

I was inspired to study abroad at Maastricht University in the Netherlands by my desire to experience a new culture, gain a global perspective, and challenge myself academically. The university's international reputation, innovative teaching methods, and vibrant city life made it an ideal choice.

Why did you choose USAC Maastricht Undergraduate Coursework?

I chose my specific program at Maastricht University because of its strong emphasis on international perspectives and problem-based learning. The university's commitment to fostering critical thinking and its diverse, dynamic student body aligned perfectly with my academic and personal growth goals. Additionally, the program's reputation for excellence and the opportunity to immerse myself in Dutch culture were significant factors in my decision.

What was your favorite part about Maastricht, Netherlands?

My favorite part about Maastricht was its rich blend of history and modernity. The city's beautiful architecture, vibrant cultural scene, and friendly locals created an inviting atmosphere. I loved exploring the charming streets, enjoying local cuisine, and experiencing the lively student community that made every day exciting and enriching.

What made your experience abroad extraordinary?

What made my experience abroad extraordinary was the opportunity to immerse myself in a new culture, meet people from diverse backgrounds, and step out of my comfort zone. The blend of rigorous academics at Maastricht University and the vibrant, multicultural environment of the city provided a unique, transformative experience that broadened my horizons both personally and academically.

How did the local program staff support you throughout your program?

The local staff at Maastricht University were incredibly supportive throughout my program. They provided comprehensive orientation sessions, academic advising, and personal support services. Their approachable nature and readiness to assist with any issues, from housing to navigating the city, made my transition and stay in Maastricht smooth and enjoyable.

What's one thing you wish you would have done differently during your time abroad?

One thing I wish I would have done differently during my time abroad is traveling more extensively throughout Europe. While I thoroughly enjoyed immersing myself in Maastricht and its surroundings, I wish I had taken advantage of the proximity to other countries to explore more cities and cultures beyond the Netherlands.

Describe what a typical day in your life abroad looked like.

A typical day in my life abroad in Maastricht started with a bike ride to campus for morning classes, where I engaged in interactive and dynamic problem-based learning sessions. After classes, I would grab lunch at a local café with friends, enjoying the city's diverse cuisine. Afternoons often included studying at the university library or group project meetings. In the evenings, I explored Maastricht's historic sites, attended cultural events, or socialized with fellow students in the vibrant city center. Weekends were reserved for travel, either exploring nearby Dutch cities or venturing into neighboring countries.

What did you enjoy doing in your free time abroad?

During my free time abroad, I enjoyed exploring the charming streets of Maastricht, visiting its historic landmarks, and discovering local cafes and restaurants. I also loved biking along the scenic paths, attending cultural festivals, and participating in university events. Additionally, I took advantage of weekends to travel to nearby cities and countries, enriching my experience with diverse cultural and historical insights.

What type of accommodation did you have? What did you like best about it?

I stayed in a shared guesthouse during my time abroad in Maastricht. The best part about this accommodation was the sense of community it fostered. Living with fellow international students provided an instant network of friends from diverse backgrounds. We often shared meals, studied together, and explored the city as a group, creating lasting memories and a supportive environment.

What is one thing every future participant should know about your program before their program begins?

One thing every future participant should know about the program at Maastricht University is the importance of embracing the problem-based learning (PBL) approach. This interactive and student-centered teaching method requires active participation, critical thinking, and collaboration. Being prepared to engage fully in discussions and group work will greatly enhance your academic experience and personal growth.

Would you recommend your program/provider to others? Why?

Yes, I would highly recommend Maastricht University to others. The program’s innovative problem-based learning approach promotes deep understanding and critical thinking, while the university's international environment fosters diverse perspectives and cultural exchange. The vibrant city of Maastricht, combined with excellent academic support, makes for an enriching and memorable study abroad experience.

What do you feel the biggest benefit of traveling abroad is?

The biggest benefit of traveling abroad is the profound personal growth and broadened perspective it offers. Immersing yourself in a new culture, navigating different social norms, and meeting people from diverse backgrounds enhances your adaptability, empathy, and global awareness. This experience not only deepens your understanding of the world but also enriches your personal and professional life.

Now that you're home, how has your time abroad impacted your life?

Now that I’m home, my time abroad has significantly impacted my life by broadening my worldview and enhancing my adaptability. I've gained a greater appreciation for diverse cultures and developed a more flexible and open-minded approach to problem-solving. This experience has also strengthened my confidence, expanded my network, and influenced my career aspirations, making me more globally-oriented and culturally aware.

What does meaningful travel mean to you?

To me, meaningful travel means engaging deeply with the cultures and communities you visit, seeking genuine connections, and gaining insights that enrich your understanding of the world. It’s about stepping beyond typical tourist experiences to immerse yourself in local traditions, contribute positively to the places you visit, and reflect on how these experiences shape your personal growth and perspective.
