Interviewed in 2019

Mireia, who is a native of Barcelona, followed her dream and spent four years studying in the US and playing Division I Basketball! After she graduated with her BA in Marketing from St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, she decided to move back to her home country, where she spent several years playing professional basketball in Spain. A former international student herself, Mireia is uniquely in tune with the potential challenges international students may face, as well as the abundant opportunities for learning and self-discovery they’re sure to encounter.

Why were you inspired to begin working with Connect-123?

I spent four years living away from home, and lots of people helped me during my stay abroad experience. I want to be that person who helps others make their experience abroad a great one.

Describe a typical day/week as the Program Coordinator in Barcelona.

In the months prior to a student’s arrival we make sure that everything is set up perfectly so that they get the best experience out of the program. Based on their interests, skills, and personality, we match them with a local host organization where they will complete an internship that is as relevant to their career as it is to their personal goals. We also help them with housing (if required) and other logistics.

Once our Connectors arrive in Barcelona, we focus on doing orientations and getting them settled in at their work placements. We also arrange lots of different activities and meet ups for all Connectors, so everyone has an opportunity to get to know one another a little better.

How do you use your own experiences as an international student in supporting Connectors?

I graduated as a Student-Athlete from Saint Joseph’s University (Philadelphia) with a Marketing degree, and an International Business minor in 2013. As a former international student myself, I am able to understand some of the challenges students face while living and working abroad.

What were the biggest lessons you learned from living and studying abroad?

I became more independent. I also learned a lot about different cultures and ways of life. Now that I am back home, all of the lessons I learned make me value things we have that I didn’t value so much before living abroad.

You have a background in Marketing. How does this influence your approach to your current work?

I studied Marketing and when I joined Connect-123 I was able to apply my studies to my work. I am always open to new marketing initiatives so I can continue to learn.

Why is Barcelona an ideal location for Connectors?

In my opinion, Barcelona is a very exciting city, full of art and activity. There is always something going on, so many experiences to choose from! Plus there is huge potential to grow professionally.

What challenges do participants often face and how do you help them overcome the challenges?

For many college students, the Connect-123 internship experience is their first time living away from home. We personally meet with them upon their arrival to give them tips on how to approach their internship, and how get around the city. We also organize regular events so they get to meet other Connectors who are also a part of the program.

Why is traveling and experiencing new cultures important?

Traveling allows you to immerse yourself in the cultural diversity that exists in our world. Getting to see the different ways people choose to live life is mind blowing and very enriching.

What does meaningful travel mean to you?

For me, meaningful travel is when I move beyond my comfort zone and get an opportunity to see life from another perspective. We usually take many things for granted, but meaningful travel often makes you realize how lucky you are to be in a certain situation, and it makes you also appreciate life and the little things and new opportunities that come your way.

What hopes do you have for the future of Connect-123 programs in Barcelona?

We hope that we can keep providing life-changing opportunities to students for many more years. It is so very rewarding when Connectors share with us how unbelievably awesome their experience was.
