How did you discover and get involved with Spirit Cultural Exchange?
After I finished my US Peace Corps Thailand experience, I wanted to work with an organization that creates cultural exchange opportunities similar to the experiences I had while in the Peace Corps. During my job search, I stumbled across Spirit’s website and read about their mission of fostering a “spirit” of international peace and understanding, and new it was the place for me!

Has your prior experience in Thailand and the Peace Corps influenced the work you do today? How so?
Yes! My time in the Peace Corps has greatly influenced my life and has led me to a career path within the Cultural Exchange industry. My time in Thailand showed me how important and valuable cultural exchange experiences can be to one’s life, and I am grateful that I get to help coordinate and facilitate these types of experiences for young professionals all around the world!

Describe a typical day on the job.
My typical day involves communicating with Spirit’s international partners and advising them in regards to the application process and program requirements. Every day I am able to speak with people from all over the world, and I enjoy getting to know them and work with them in making international university students and young professionals’ dream of training in the USA a reality.
How can students prepare for their programs with Spirit Cultural Exchange?
Students can prepare for their programs by first reflecting on what new skills, knowledge, and experiences they are hoping to gain from the internship program. Having specific goals in mind for all the things you are hoping to learn and experience will help you in preparing to train in the USA.
I would also encourage students to pay attention and read through all the orientation materials that Spirit provides to our incoming students. We give lots of helpful information and resources that can be easily missed if you do not read the emails we send or watch the online orientation videos provided. Lastly, I would encourage you to contact us with any questions you may have. Spirit is here to help support you during your program!
Do you have any book recommendations for students on a Spirit Cultural Exchange program?
I found that when I was traveling in Thailand, the book “Culture Shock! Thailand” by Robert Cooper was very helpful. This series has books for multiple countries, so I would encourage you to read “Culture Shock! USA” by Esther Wanning. Spirit also has a blog on our website that consists of posts from staff members and participants. Our blogs have some great stories, tips, and tricks from previous Spirit cultural exchange participants that you may find helpful during your program.

Who is the most successful type of participant, and what kind of qualities do they possess?
I would say the most successful type of participant is one who is open to new experiences and ideas. Someone who is willing to step outside of their comfort zone, try new things, and make new friends! It is also helpful to be honest with your host company or sponsor if you feel that you have a question or concern during your program. I also think that successful participants are actively participating in cultural activities and making an effort to get to know their local community.
What is something you want future students to know about Spirit Cultural Exchange?
Future participants should know that Spirit Cultural Exchange is here to support you on your program, and that we want you to be successful on this program. We love to speak with our participants, and we encourage you to call us and share your cultural exchange experiences. Almost everyone at Spirit has traveled internationally and experienced working or studying in a different country, so we are able to relate to any questions or concerns you might have!

Why should future students be excited to join a Spirit Cultural Exchange program?
Spirit Cultural Exchange prides ourselves in providing quality cultural exchange programs to our participants and we are like one big happy family! When you apply for a program through Spirit, you can be assured that you will receive excellent support and service, and that you will always be speaking with someone who cares about you and your program.
What does meaningful travel mean to you?
Meaningful travel is more than just a week-long trip to another country. It involves getting to know the people of the place you are going to and learning about the local culture. Meaningful travel is also an opportunity for you to share your own culture and experience with others. Meaningful travel allows one to get a better understanding of themselves and the world around them!
