What inspired you to work for your organization?

Pro-Passion Projects is more than just a role—it's the realization of a vision I've always shared. It has been my dream to manage an organization that aligns with my passion, goals, mission, and values. Pro-Passion Projects embodies everything I believe in: empowering communities, supporting the underprivileged, and creating meaningful opportunities for change. Also, from my 10 years of experience at Projects Abroad as volunteer coordinator and later Accra Regional Manager and Ghana Destination Expert

Through this organization, I can merge my love for social impact, experience, education, and volunteerism with real, tangible action. Every project we undertake reflects my commitment to making a difference, fostering growth, and ensuring that those in need receive the support they deserve. Pro-Passion Projects is not just a mission—it’s a lifelong purpose.

Describe a typical day at work.

My day at Pro-Passion Projects is always dynamic and rewarding. I start by responding to emails and engaging in virtual meetings via Zoom, Skype, or Google Meet with potential volunteers and partners. Scheduling and coordinating volunteer placements is a key part of my role, ensuring each volunteer is matched with the right project.

I work closely with my team on volunteer coordination, handling new placements, visa support, and logistical arrangements. Checking in with staff responsible for airport pickups and ensuring smooth arrivals is another crucial task. Additionally, I organize social and cultural activities for both staff and volunteers to enhance their experience.

Before a volunteer arrives, I draft and send letters to host families and placement sites to ensure everything is set for a meaningful experience. Each day is filled with opportunities to create impactful experiences and support our mission of community development.

Why do you do what you do?

I am deeply passionate about creating opportunities for people to make a meaningful impact in underserved communities. Pro-Passion Projects aligns with my vision of managing an organization that shares my passion, goals, mission, and values.

Growing up, I always wanted to support the less privileged, and working with Pro-Passion Projects allows me to turn that dream into reality. Through volunteerism, education, and community development, I can help connect passionate individuals with those in need, fostering real change.

Seeing the transformation in both volunteers and the communities we serve keeps me motivated. Whether it's helping a student access education, organizing a healthcare initiative, or empowering local families, every action contributes to a larger mission of sustainable development. This is more than just work—it’s my calling.

What is your favorite part of your job?

The most fulfilling aspect of my work with Pro-Passion Projects is the opportunity to support the needy, uplift the less privileged, and create a lasting impact in underserved communities. Seeing the direct transformation in people's lives—whether through education, healthcare, or empowerment initiatives—fuels my passion every day. Knowing that my efforts contribute to real change and provide hope to those who need it most is truly rewarding.

How do you use your education and international background in your current role?

My education in Mathematics and Statistics from Accra Technical University and Science at Accra Academy Senior High School has given me a strong analytical foundation, which I use to assess the impact of our programs and measure success. These skills are invaluable when evaluating data related to volunteer placements, project outcomes, and community needs.

Additionally, my international background allows me to connect with volunteers from diverse cultural contexts. I understand the importance of cultural exchange and sensitivity, which is critical in my role at Pro-Passion Projects. I use my experiences to build bridges between volunteers and local communities, ensuring that both sides benefit from the exchange.

In managing volunteer coordination, my education helps me organize resources effectively, while my understanding of different cultures enables me to offer tailored support to volunteers, ensuring they have meaningful and enriching experiences. By combining my education and international experiences, I can address challenges thoughtfully, creating sustainable solutions that align with the mission of Pro-Passion Projects.

What challenges do you often face, and how do you overcome them?

  • Cultural Differences and Adaptation

Working with international volunteers means navigating cultural differences. Some volunteers face challenges adjusting to the local environment, which can affect their overall experience. I overcome this by ensuring that cultural sensitivity training is included in the volunteer orientation process and maintaining open communication channels with both volunteers and host families. This helps bridge the gap between diverse cultures and fosters mutual understanding.

  • Managing Logistics for Volunteers and Staff

Coordinating logistics for volunteers, such as airport pick-ups, accommodations, and project placements, can be complex. To tackle this, I rely on meticulous planning and use tools like calendars and project management apps to keep everything organized. I also work closely with local teams to ensure seamless execution and always have a backup plan in case of unexpected issues.

  • Volunteer Expectations vs. Reality

Sometimes, volunteers arrive with high expectations, but the on-the-ground experience can be different from what they imagined. To address this, I make sure to have detailed conversations with volunteers during the application process, setting clear expectations. I also ensure ongoing support, encouraging open dialogue, so volunteers feel supported throughout their journey.

  • Resource Limitations

As a nonprofit, we often face resource constraints, including limited funding for certain programs. I work to overcome this by seeking partnerships, exploring funding opportunities, and maximizing the use of available resources. This requires creativity and strategic planning, ensuring that we can still deliver impactful programs despite the challenges.

  • Volunteers' Safety and Well-being

Ensuring the safety and well-being of volunteers is a top priority. I stay proactive in assessing risks and provide volunteers with clear guidelines and emergency contact information. Additionally, I work closely with the local community and staff to ensure volunteers are always supported and have access to the resources they need for a safe experience.

What are some current projects you are working on?

Currently, I am working on several impactful projects at Pro-Passion Projects, each focusing on creating positive change in underserved communities in Ghana and beyond. Some of these projects include:

  • Volunteer and Internship Programs

I am working on coordinating our volunteer and internship programs, ensuring that we have well-organized placements for international volunteers in fields such as education, healthcare, law, human rights, physical therapy, childcare, sports, veterinary, journalism, and more. These programs are designed to provide meaningful experiences for volunteers while benefiting local communities in need.

  • Support for Brilliant but Needy Students

This is an ongoing project where I’m focused on supporting brilliant but financially disadvantaged students in Accra, La. Through this initiative, we aim to provide educational support, resources, and opportunities for students to reach their full potential, breaking the cycle of poverty.

What advice would you give your pre-travel self?

I would advise my pre-travel self to be open-minded and adaptable. Traveling, especially for work or volunteer projects, requires patience, flexibility, and the ability to embrace new cultures, environments, and ways of doing things. I'd remind myself that challenges will arise, but they are part of the learning process, and they help you grow both personally and professionally.

I'd also tell myself to take time to appreciate the impact of every small contribution. Sometimes, we focus on big results, but it's the small, consistent efforts that build lasting change in communities. Embrace every experience, whether it's helping someone with a simple task or being part of a larger project.

Lastly, I'd encourage myself to build strong connections with people from different backgrounds and experiences. These relationships often provide unexpected insights and valuable support throughout the journey. And, always remember to take care of my well-being—physically and mentally—as it’s crucial to maintaining the energy needed to support others effectively.

We focus on providing opportunities in education, healthcare, human rights, and community development, fostering cultural exchange, and contributing to the betterment of underprivileged communities.

We continue to work toward our mission by carefully selecting volunteer placements that align with the needs of local communities, offering hands-on support, and ensuring the well-being of volunteers throughout their experience. Our dedicated team focuses on providing ongoing support, including pre-departure assistance, on-the-ground logistics, and post-program feedback to ensure impactful outcomes.

By maintaining a strong network of local partners, offering culturally immersive experiences, and emphasizing ethical, community-driven practices, we ensure that our projects contribute to long-term, positive change for both volunteers and the communities they serve. Through continuous learning and adapting to the needs of the communities we support, we remain committed to making a lasting impact.

What do you hope participants take away from your programs?

We hope participants take away a deep sense of fulfillment, cultural understanding, and a strengthened passion for global change. Our programs are designed not only to provide professional experience but also offer personal growth opportunities by immersing volunteers in diverse communities. Participants gain valuable skills, expand their worldview, and learn the importance of empathy, social responsibility, and collaboration in driving meaningful change.

Moreover, we aim for our volunteers to leave with a strong sense of the positive impact they’ve made in the communities they’ve worked in, whether through education, healthcare, human rights, or community development. We want them to feel empowered and inspired to continue making a difference in their personal and professional lives, contributing to global progress and creating a ripple effect of change.

If you could participate in one of your organization's programs, where would you go and what would you do?

If I could participate in one of Pro-Passion Projects' programs, I would choose to join the Medical and Public Health Project in Ghana. Given my passion for community support and making an impact, this program would allow me to directly contribute to improving healthcare in underserved communities.

I would focus on providing health education, offering medical outreach services, and supporting local health professionals in improving healthcare access for vulnerable populations. It would be an incredible opportunity to not only apply my knowledge but also learn from the experiences of local communities, ultimately making a difference in the lives of people who need it most.

Being part of such a meaningful initiative would allow me to make a lasting impact while expanding my understanding of the health challenges faced in resource-limited settings. Additionally, the cultural exchange and collaboration with volunteers and local staff would be an enriching experience both personally and professionally.

What questions do participants often ask you, and how do you typically respond?

Participants often ask several questions before and during their internships or volunteer placements with Pro-Passion Projects. Here are some of the most common ones, along with how I typically respond:

What is the accommodation like?

Response: We offer comfortable host family accommodations where you'll have the opportunity to live and interact with local families, allowing for a richer cultural experience. Your accommodation will include meals (breakfast, packed lunch, and dinner), room cleaning, and access to clean drinking water. You'll be sharing a room with other volunteers of the same sex.

Is there any training or orientation before I start?

Response: Yes! Before you begin your placement, we provide an orientation that covers everything from cultural awareness to health and safety protocols. You'll also be given a detailed briefing on your specific role and the projects you'll be working on.

Do I need to speak the local language?

Response: While knowing the local language (like Twi or Ga) can be helpful, it's not required. Most of our volunteers and staff communicate in English, and we make sure you're supported throughout your placement with guidance from our team.

How can I stay safe during my time in Ghana?

Response: Your safety is our top priority. We provide all volunteers with an ID card that includes emergency contact details. Our staff is available 24/7 to support you in case of emergencies, and we ensure that all volunteers receive safety tips upon arrival.

Do I need any special skills or qualifications to apply?

Response: While specific skills or qualifications can be beneficial for certain projects, we encourage anyone passionate about making a positive impact to apply. We are more focused on your dedication to the mission and your ability to adapt to different environments.

What happens if I have an issue or concern during my placement?

Response: Our team is here to support you at all times. If you encounter any challenges or concerns, you can reach out to us immediately. We will work with you to find solutions and ensure your experience is as positive as possible.

Can I travel around Ghana during my time as a volunteer?

Response: Yes! As part of our program, we organize cultural and social activities, and you’ll have the opportunity to explore local attractions. We encourage you to immerse yourself in the local culture and enjoy your time in Ghana while still maintaining your responsibilities.

Why is it important for people to travel abroad and experience new cultures?

Traveling abroad and experiencing new cultures is important for several reasons:

  • Personal Growth: Exposure to different cultures allows individuals to step outside their comfort zones and challenge their assumptions, leading to personal growth. It broadens perspectives, builds resilience, and fosters adaptability in diverse environments.
  • Cultural Understanding and Empathy: Traveling helps people understand and appreciate cultures different from their own, leading to greater empathy, tolerance, and respect for others. This fosters a more interconnected and harmonious world.
  • Building Global Connections: Traveling abroad opens doors to creating lasting relationships with people from diverse backgrounds. These connections can lead to mutual learning, collaboration, and even professional opportunities.
  • Promoting Social Impact: Traveling to countries with different socio-economic conditions offers the opportunity to engage in projects that contribute to social good, whether through volunteering, education, or community development. It allows individuals to make a positive impact on underserved communities.
  • Learning New Skills: Traveling abroad exposes individuals to new ways of thinking, working, and solving problems, offering invaluable skills such as language acquisition, communication, and problem-solving in international settings.
  • Broadened Worldview: Experiencing new cultures challenges preconceived notions, providing a more nuanced understanding of global issues. It helps people become more informed, open-minded citizens of the world.

Why do you think learning a new language is important?

Learning a new language is important for several reasons:

  • Improved Communication: Language is the primary way we communicate. By learning a new language, you gain the ability to connect with people from different cultures, enhancing personal and professional relationships.
  • Cultural Understanding: Language and culture are closely linked. Learning a new language opens the door to understanding the traditions, customs, history, and values of the people who speak it, leading to greater empathy and appreciation for diversity.
  • Cognitive Benefits: Studies have shown that learning a new language improves cognitive abilities, including memory, problem-solving skills, and multitasking. It can also delay the onset of cognitive decline and enhance overall brain health.
  • Increased Career Opportunities: In today's globalized world, bilingualism or multilingualism is highly valued by employers. It can set you apart in competitive job markets, especially in fields such as international relations, business, healthcare, and education.
  • Access to More Information: Knowing another language allows you to access a wider range of knowledge, whether it’s literature, media, research, or news. It can enhance your ability to learn and stay informed about global issues.
  • Travel Experiences: Speaking the local language when traveling makes the experience richer and more immersive. It allows you to navigate more easily, build connections with locals, and gain a deeper understanding of the places you visit.
  • Personal Growth and Confidence: Mastering a new language is an accomplishment that boosts self-esteem and encourages lifelong learning. It teaches perseverance, patience, and resilience, helping you grow as an individual.

What advice do you have for individuals thinking about going abroad?

For individuals thinking about going abroad, my advice is:

  • Do Your Research: Understand the culture, customs, and local laws of the country you’ll be visiting to ensure you're well-prepared and respectful.
  • Be Open-Minded: Embrace new experiences and be flexible in adapting to unfamiliar situations and environments.
  • Learn the Basics of the Local Language: Even a few words can make a huge difference in building relationships and navigating daily life.
  • Stay Safe: Always have emergency contacts, stay aware of your surroundings, and follow safety guidelines.
  • Make the Most of the Experience: Engage with locals, learn from different perspectives, and make connections that will enrich your journey.
  • Prepare financially: Budget carefully and ensure you have access to funds for emergencies or unexpected expenses.
  • Have Patience: Things might not always go as planned, but with patience and a positive attitude, you’ll overcome any challenges.

What does meaningful travel mean to you?

Meaningful travel to me means traveling with a purpose that goes beyond sightseeing. It’s about immersing yourself in the local culture, understanding the challenges of the communities you visit, and contributing positively to their development. It’s about forming genuine connections, learning from others, and gaining a deeper appreciation for diversity. Whether through volunteering, supporting local businesses, or participating in projects that make a real impact, meaningful travel fosters personal growth while also giving back to the places you visit.

What does ethical global engagement mean to you?

In international education, some issues that don’t align with my values include:

  • Lack of Community Impact: Some programs prioritize the educational experience of participants over the actual needs of the local community. This leads to one-sided benefits, where the community doesn't see tangible improvements or long-term value.
  • Over-commercialization: Some organizations treat international volunteering as a business, focusing more on profit than on meaningful, sustainable partnerships with host communities. This can result in exploitative practices, where the local people are not adequately compensated or supported.
  • Cultural Insensitivity: Programs that do not place enough emphasis on understanding local customs, traditions, and values can unintentionally create a disconnect between volunteers and the communities they are meant to help. Miscommunication and a lack of respect for cultural diversity can harm relationships and diminish the program's impact.
  • Short-Term Focus: Programs that rely on short-term volunteer placements often fail to create lasting change. Volunteers may leave before significant progress is made, which can lead to a cycle of continuous turnover rather than sustainable development.

What hopes do you have for the future of international education?

I hope for a future of international education that prioritizes inclusivity, accessibility, and meaningful cultural exchange. I envision a world where:

  • Equal Access: More individuals from diverse backgrounds and underrepresented communities have the opportunity to participate in international education and volunteering programs, regardless of financial or geographical barriers.
  • Impactful, Sustainable Development: Programs focus on creating long-lasting positive impacts in local communities, with a strong emphasis on collaboration, sustainable development, and empowerment rather than dependency.
  • Cultural Understanding: Students and volunteers come to truly understand and appreciate the cultures they engage with, leading to global citizens who are more empathetic, open-minded, and equipped to address global challenges.
  • Ethical and Responsible Practices: Organizations prioritize ethical engagement by ensuring that their work is done in a way that respects the rights, dignity, and needs of local communities and minimizes any negative consequences of external interventions.
  • Technology and Innovation: The use of technology enables more flexible, immersive, and impactful international education experiences, allowing students and volunteers to connect, learn, and contribute in new ways.

What qualities in program & host community relations are essential to you? (And Pro-Passion Projects?)

For Pro-Passion Projects, the following qualities in program and host community relations are essential:

  • Mutual Respect: Building relationships based on mutual respect between volunteers, program staff, and the local community is fundamental. Volunteers and staff must approach the community with humility, recognizing local knowledge and expertise while offering their support in a non-paternalistic manner.
  • Collaboration: Successful programs are those that work together with the community to identify needs and solutions. We prioritize co-designing projects with community leaders to ensure that initiatives align with local priorities and values.
  • Cultural Sensitivity: Understanding and respecting local customs, traditions, and ways of life is critical. Volunteers and staff are trained to be mindful of cultural differences, fostering positive and respectful interactions.
  • Long-Term Partnerships: We strive for sustainable and long-term relationships with the communities we serve, ensuring that the impact of our projects is felt well after the volunteers have left. This includes maintaining regular communication, offering ongoing support, and nurturing a spirit of shared responsibility.
  • Community Empowerment: Our goal is not just to provide assistance, but to empower communities to drive their own development. This involves facilitating skills transfer, leadership development, and opportunities for local people to take ownership of projects.
  • Transparency and Accountability: Open communication, transparency, and accountability are key to maintaining trust. We ensure that both volunteers and communities are clear about the goals, responsibilities, and expectations of the programs.
