What inspired you to work for Bilingual Education for Central America (BECA)?

I am inspired to pursue work in my field because I’m passionate about making a meaningful impact. Studying industrial engineering has given me insight into problem-solving and efficiency, which aligns perfectly with my goal of supporting my community and creating innovative solutions to real-world challenges.

Describe a typical day at work.

A typical day of work at the school involves creating a supportive and organized environment for students and staff. I start by ensuring that everything is prepared for the day's activities, whether that means organizing materials, assisting in classrooms, or coordinating schedules.

Throughout the day, I interact with students, providing guidance and encouragement, and collaborate with colleagues to address challenges and improve the school environment. By the end of the day, I feel fulfilled knowing my efforts are contributing to the growth and success of the students.

Why do you do what you do?

I work at BECA because it allows me to pursue my passion for supporting my community and empowering others. BECA provides an incredible platform to make a positive impact by offering opportunities for growth, education, and transformation. Being part of this organization allows me to combine my skills in industrial engineering with my commitment to making a difference.

What is your favorite part of your job?

My favorite part of working at the school is connecting with students and seeing the positive impact I can have on their lives. Whether it's through offering support, helping them overcome challenges, or simply sharing moments of encouragement, I love being part of their growth and success. It’s incredibly rewarding to know that my work contributes to shaping a brighter future for them.

How do you use your education and international background in your current role?

I use my education and international background to bring fresh perspectives and innovative ideas to my role at the school. My diverse experiences help me connect with students and colleagues from different cultural and educational backgrounds, fostering inclusivity and understanding. By applying what I’ve learned, I contribute to creating an environment where everyone feels supported and empowered to achieve their best.

What challenges do you often face and how do you overcome them?

One challenge I often face is managing the diverse needs and expectations of students, staff, and parents. It can sometimes be difficult to ensure that everyone is on the same page and that all concerns are being addressed. I overcome this by staying organized, communicating clearly, and being proactive in finding solutions.

I also rely on my ability to listen and remain flexible, adjusting my approach as needed to meet the needs of every situation. By fostering open communication and building strong relationships, I am able to navigate challenges effectively.

What are some current projects you are working on?

Currently, I am working on several projects that aim to enhance the school environment and support students. One project involves organizing extracurricular activities that promote teamwork and personal growth. Another focuses on creating resources and support systems for students who need additional guidance.

I’m also involved in improving communication between staff, parents, and students to ensure everyone is informed and engaged. These projects allow me to contribute to the school’s overall mission while creating a more inclusive and supportive atmosphere for everyone.

What advice would you tell your pre-travel self?

To my pre-travel self, I would advise embracing every opportunity for growth and learning. Don’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone and experience new cultures, people, and ways of thinking. Be open-minded and patient, as travel can sometimes present challenges, but each one is an opportunity to learn something valuable. Trust your instincts and remember that every experience, even the difficult ones, will shape you into a more resilient and understanding person.

What makes your BECA special?

It’s an environment that encourages personal growth, connection, and a commitment to make a difference in the world.

I hope that we build even stronger connections with the communities we serve, helping individuals achieve their goals and become leaders who make a difference in the world.

Are there any developments with BECA that you would like to share with us?

One of the exciting developments at BECA is the expansion of our mentorship programs, which are designed to provide more personalized guidance and support to those we serve. We’ve also been working on increasing our community outreach, connecting with more local organizations to provide greater resources and opportunities for growth.

Additionally, we’re launching new initiatives focused on skill development, education, and leadership that will help individuals build long-term success. These changes reflect BECA's commitment to growing and adapting to meet the evolving needs of the people we work with.

BECA is easy to market to potential participants because of its strong focus on community, empowerment, and providing real opportunities for personal and professional growth. BECA’s reputation for making a lasting impact, along with the tangible benefits it offers—such as mentorship, education, and skill-building opportunities—makes it an attractive option for those seeking to improve their lives and contribute to their communities. The clear, positive outcomes participants can expect make it easy to showcase BECA’s value.

What is BECA’s mission and how do you continue to work toward it?

BECA’s mission is to empower individuals and communities by providing access to resources, education, and mentorship, fostering personal and professional growth. We continue to work toward this mission by creating programs that support skill development, leadership, and education. Additionally, BECA remains committed to outreach and collaboration with other organizations to extend our impact and ensure that everyone we serve has the support they need to succeed.

What do you hope participants take away from your programs?

I hope that participants take away not only valuable skills and knowledge but also a sense of empowerment and confidence. I want participants to feel supported, motivated, and equipped with the tools they need to succeed in their endeavors. Ultimately, I hope they leave with a stronger sense of purpose, a deeper connection to their community, and the belief that they can make a meaningful impact in the world.

How do you help support participants?

I support participants by providing a nurturing environment where they feel valued and encouraged. Through mentorship, guidance, and personalized support, I help them navigate challenges and reach their goals.

I also ensure they have access to the resources and opportunities they need for growth, whether through educational tools, skill-building activities, or community connections. By actively listening and responding to their needs, I help participants develop the confidence and capabilities to succeed, empowering them to take ownership of their futures.

If you could participate in one of BECA’s programs, where would you go and what would you do?

If I could participate in one of BECA’s programs, I would choose a community outreach or leadership development initiative. I would love to work directly with individuals to help them build skills, gain confidence, and create lasting connections within the community.. Being able to be a part of their journey and help them unlock their potential would be incredibly fulfilling.

Why is it important for people to travel abroad and experience new cultures?

  1. It broadens your perspective: exposure to different cultures helps individuals see the world from diverse viewpoints and develop empathy, open-mindedness, and a deeper understanding of the complexities of global issues.
  2. It facilitates personal growth: navigating unfamiliar environments challenges people to step outside their comfort zones, which can lead to increased self-confidence, adaptability, and resilience.
  3. It promotes cultural exchange: traveling abroad allows for the sharing of ideas, traditions, and customs, contributing to a greater appreciation of cultural diversity and reducing stereotypes or misconceptions.
  4. It provides learning opportunities: immersing oneself in a new culture offers the chance to learn new languages, acquire new skills, and develop a deeper appreciation for history, art, and traditions that may not be accessible at home.
  5. It helps you build global connections: travel allows you to form connections with people from different backgrounds, creating networks that can be personally enriching and professionally beneficial.

Why do you think learning a new language is important?

  1. It enhances communication: it allows you to connect with people from different cultures, improving your ability to engage in meaningful conversations, build relationships, and understand others more deeply.
  2. It expands career opportunities: in an increasingly globalized world, speaking multiple languages opens doors to a wider range of professional opportunities, particularly in international business, diplomacy, and travel.
  3. It provides cognitive benefits: learning a new language strengthens cognitive abilities such as memory, problem-solving, and multitasking. It also enhances creativity and improves brain health by keeping the mind active and engaged.
  4. It builds cultural understanding: mastering a language often leads to a better understanding of the culture behind it. It helps you appreciate literature, music, art, and history in their original form, giving you a richer experience of the world.

What advice do you have for individuals thinking about going abroad?

Embrace new experiences, even if they are different from what you’re used to. Cultures, foods, and social norms might be unfamiliar, but approaching them with an open mind will lead to growth and enrich your travel experience. Learn about the country you’re visiting. Understand its history, culture, language, and any safety tips to ensure you're well-prepared. This knowledge will help you feel more confident and respectful while abroad.

What does meaningful travel mean to you?

Meaningful travel, to me, means more than just visiting new places—it’s about experiencing and engaging with the world in a way that facilitates personal growth, cultural understanding, and deeper connections. It’s about stepping outside of your comfort zone and immersing yourself in local cultures, listening to diverse perspectives, and learning from the people you meet.

What issues do you see in the world of international education that don’t line up with your values and expectations for mutually beneficial & educational relationships between providers/programs and the communities in which they are located?

In some cases, international education programs might portray local cultures in stereotypical ways, using them for "cultural tourism" without giving back to the communities. This can result in an exploitative dynamic, where the focus is on presenting an image for tourists or students rather than fostering genuine understanding or respect for the culture.

What does ethical global engagement mean to you?

  1. Respect for cultural diversity: you should approach different cultures with an open mind, avoiding stereotypes, and seeking to understand and appreciate the values, traditions, and perspectives of others.
  2. Reciprocity: engagement should be a two-way exchange, where all parties gain from the interaction. Whether in education, business, or community projects, it’s important to ensure that the benefits are shared and that both sides are empowered by the relationship.
  3. Sustainability: ethical global engagement considers long-term impacts, such as environmental sustainability and social equity. Actions should not exploit or harm the environment or the people involved but should aim to create lasting positive change.
  4. Accountability and transparency: being ethically engaged means being transparent about intentions, actions, and outcomes. This includes holding oneself and others accountable for ensuring that promises are kept and that the engagement respects human rights and promotes fairness.
  5. Inclusion and empowerment: ethical engagement means making sure that marginalized or underrepresented voices are heard, valued, and included in decision-making processes. It’s about empowering local communities, providing opportunities for growth, and helping them have a say in the shaping of their future.

What hopes do you have for the future of international education?

  1. Increased access and inclusivity: I hope for a future where international education becomes more accessible to a wider range of people, especially those from marginalized or underrepresented backgrounds. This means breaking down financial, geographical, and social barriers so that more students can benefit from cross-cultural exchange and global learning opportunities.
  2. Mutually beneficial partnerships: I envision international education programs that prioritize reciprocal relationships, where both the host communities and the students gain valuable insights and skills. This would involve greater collaboration between institutions and local communities to ensure that the benefits of these exchanges flow both ways.
  3. Cultural understanding and global citizenship: my hope is that international education continues to foster deep cultural understanding, empathy, and respect. By embracing diverse perspectives, students and communities can better navigate global challenges and contribute to creating a more peaceful and interconnected world.
  4. Innovation and adaptability: with the rapid pace of technological change, I hope that international education evolves to incorporate innovative teaching methods and tools that allow students to engage with the world in new ways. This includes harnessing the power of digital learningf, virtual exchanges, and collaborative global platforms to reach more learners and promote global collaboration.

What qualities in program & host community relations are important to you? (And your organization?)

Both the program providers and host communities must respect each other’s cultures, values, and perspectives. A relationship built on mutual respect creates trust, understanding, and collaboration, which is the foundation of any successful partnership.

Effective programs should be developed with input from the host community, ensuring that their needs, priorities, and values are considered. Co-creation leads to more relevant and impactful initiatives, and it empowers the local community to be a true partner in the process.
