What inspired you to go abroad?

A combination of dreams, fliers posted my professor, synchronicities, past travel abroad experiences, grant availability at Cleveland State University, and personal interest in traditional healing and agricultural practices.

Why did you choose CELA Belize?

I wanted to learn from masters is traditional healing and plant growing. Health, Belief, and Ethnomedicine allowed me to meet Maya and Garifuna people that hold thousands of years of wisdom. Also, Belize is one of the most biologically diverse places in the world.

What was your favorite part about Belize?

The jungle was my favorite part of Belize.

What made your experience abroad unique?

The unique set up of the course introduced me to people and places I would not have been able to find on my own. Also, I saw a rainbow cloudburst that was pretty cool.

How did local staff support you throughout your program?

The program directors did not give up on me even though it took me awhile to secure funding from my university. They also gave a introductory course on living in Belize.

Describe a typical day in the life of your program.

I woke up at 5 a.m. every day to watch the sunrise because it was so beautiful. Most of my friends got up at 7 a.m. An example day would be getting up at 7 a.m., taking a shower, and doing yoga with everyone before eating breakfast that was brought to the house. Leaving in the van to meet a healer, and then arriving at a healer's medicinal garden and receiving a tour of their land. Eating a plant packed lunch with them or leaving to eat lunch at a local restaurant. Having circle reflection as a group, seeing a temple, going out for dinner (again very healthy), and returning to read the assigned reading and complete journal entries. Sleeping very well!

What did you enjoy doing in your free time?

I enjoyed journaling, meditating, and just taking in the sky. The sky in Belize is amazing! I also walked to the market one day with a friend.

What was your accommodation like? What did you like best about it?

I loved it! It was a very nice house we all shared most days but we also stayed with Maya people. Aurora Garcia Saqui's place was amazing because I slept outside under the stars even though a bed was provided there for me. My favorite part about the house was the roof with an amazing view of San Ignacio.

What is one thing every participant should know before participating in your program?

Come with an open mind and bring a notebook to record the plants. Also you can take notes on photos using markup on Iphone! Pack light, stay present, and drink a lot of water.

Now that you're home, how has your program abroad impacted your life?

It has inspired me to pursue healing, agriculture, and changed my lifestyle for the better! I was especially inspired to keep eating healthy foods.

What's one thing you wish you would have done differently?

I would not change anything for the world! Maybe packing lighter! Bring one carry on and wash your clothes.

Would you recommend CELA Belize to others? Why?

Yes! This is the course/trip of a lifetime.
