Summer has come and gone, and by now, most students are back in the classroom clinging on to those last precious memories of sunshine. As fall term moves forward, it might seem ludicrous to already be planning ahead for studying abroad in 2018. But when something as monumental as studying abroad is on the line, then plan we must.
Types of study abroad programs to consider in 2018
Summer study abroad programs are a great way for busy students to gain an idea of what studying abroad is all about, without actually giving up a full semester or year of their time to make it happen. Summer programs generally range from just a week on the shorter end up to a full two or three months on the long end. It’s up to you to select the perfect program that fits with your academic needs, time constraints, and vision of where in the world you’d like to adventure during those long summer days.
On the other hand, semester and year-long study abroad programs really give you the chance to immerse yourself in another culture. It can be tough to be away from home—and your university—but this long, but if you have your sights set on fluency in another language, or just loooove pushing your comfort zone to new heights, then more long term programs will be a better fit for you. Just make sure your courses and credits are applicable towards your degree, otherwise you might be taking a victory lap with a second senior year someday!
Separate from that decision, however, and not quite as romantic a proposition, is how you’ll pay for the trip. Studying abroad can come with a hefty price tag on it, especially if you are paying for a summer term on top of your normal tuition. Luckily for you there are tons of great scholarships for study abroad that out there just waiting to help make your dream come true.
